‘Thus says the Lord: “Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is

about to come, my justice, about to be revealed.” Is 56:1

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Our readings this weekend really put it up to us. The Jewish people, before the time of Jesus and during the time of Jesus, believed they were the chosen people of God and they alone were the only ones to be saved. Everyone else was unclean, or gentiles, as described in our gospel, as dogs. The prophet Isaiah, in our first reading and the Canaanite women from our gospel, very clearly challenges that perception. Isaiah states on behalf of God: “The foreigners (Gentiles) who join themselves to the Lord, ministering to the Lord, loving the name of the Lord, and becoming the Lords servants – all who keep the sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer.”

In our gospel we find Jesus holding strongly to the Jewish tradition that the word of God and all the benefits that comes with being the chosen people are for the Jewish people alone, and to give it to the unclean would be a waste, equivalent to throwing good food to the dogs. Some may feel that Jesus was showing more of his human side than his divine side at this moment or some may feel Jesus already new the depth of faith this woman had and wanted to draw her out so as to use her as an example to the lukewarm faith of the Jews. What ever the situation, Jesus was made to declare how God is for all people and hears the prayers of all who have faith, even this woman, a Canaanite, a gentile, a non-Jew. So, where do we fall?

Just because we are baptised, do we think we do not have to do anything and still make it to heaven?

Do we live by the formula delivered to us through the prophet Isaiah in our first reading?

Are we dismissive or judgemental of others and use derogatory language or names toward them?

Do we believe our God is a God for all people?

Let us pray that we will give ourselves the time to allow God’s word to enter into our hearts so as to change what dwells in our minds.

Have a wonderful and safe week.

With love for our neighbors who have nothing, men and women parishioners answer the call to be members of our St. Vincent de Paul conference, taking up the crucial work of caring for the poor, dispensing aid and listening to their needs with great warmth and steadiness.

Will you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society

of St. Vincent de Paul?

2020-2021 REGISTRATION - WE WILL BEGIN OCTOBER 4, 2020 ONLINE WITH A DIGITAL PLATFORM AND RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM IN JANUARY 2021. Returning families please email Margaret Zola [email protected] to schedule a time to pick up your re-registration packet. All the information about next year is in your packet. Please spread the word. 7th GRADE 2019-2020 STUDENTS All 7th Grade families have received an email regarding important information about not being in the classroom for the final months of RE, not being able to attend their first Confirmation Meeting and the impact it has had on their journey to receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in May 2021. Please be sure it has been received and read entirely. VOLUNTEERS ARE ALWAYS NEEDED IN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION! Please consider volunteering. We have a wonderful program for Catechists, Aides and Hall Monitors. The success of our program is dependent on the willingness of individuals to help out. All volunteers need to be fingerprinted and attend a “VIRTUS” Safe Child workshop before being allowed to volunteer. (Fingerprinting and VIRTUS information can be found on our RE website.) Volunteering is a rewarding experience to share your faith with our parish youth. High School and College age volunteers will excel this year since we will be going digital – this is right up their alley.

With the Lord there is mercy; in him is plentiful redemption. [Psalm 130(129):7]
