The Duquesne Symphony Orchestra is central to the curriculum at the Mary Pappert School of Music. An integral feature of basic musicianship training that all instrumentalists in every degree program receive, the orchestral program helps students develop the understanding, technique and discipline required of professional orchestral musicians.

Orchestra members rehearse three times each week and attend classes in orchestral excerpts and orchestra repertoire for brass, percussion, woodwind and string sections.

The Symphony Orchestra performs in Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Music Hall, renowned for its architectural beauty, and in Pittsburgh’s premiere orchestral venue, Heinz Hall. In a typical school year, the Symphony Orchestra performs four to six concerts of major works from the standard orchestral repertoire, as well as a diverse range of music from Baroque to Contemporary. Soloists with the orchestra frequently include principal players from the world-renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Jeffrey Turner was named Director of Orchestral Studies in spring 2011, and serves as the Orchestra’s Music Director.

The Wind Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Robert C. Cameron, has received national attention through its performances at the Eastern Division College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) conference in New Hampshire and the Golden Anniversary CBDNA national convention in Kansas City. Guest artists and conductors have included H. Robert Reynolds, Brian Bowman, Allen Vizutti, Norman Dello Joio, Donald Sinta, Larry Rachleff, Eugene Corporon, Stanley DeRusha, James Walker and many others.

Using a pool of players, the ensemble performs music ranging from works requiring as few as eight to as many as 45 musicians. Flexible instrumentation provides members with a variety of responsibilities, challenges and playing experiences.

Duquesne University’s Voices of Spirit consists of 28 of the finest singers on campus, who are dedicated to the study and performance of choral music at the highest level. They sing a challenging repertoire, from Renaissance masses and motets to opera choruses, jazz, popular standards, folk and contemporary art music. The Voices are equally adept at singing a cappella as well as with piano, jazz ensemble or orchestral instruments. They perform a variety of concerts throughout the region and across the state, and have represented Duquesne on a performing tour of Eastern Europe, including concerts in Vienna, Prague and Budapest.

The Duquesne University Pappert Men’s Chorale is comprised of approximately 40 men from within the music school as well as from other schools of the University. Their repertoire ranges from early Gregorian chant and Renaissance motets through modern popular music and jazz standards. From time to time, they combine with the Women’s Chorale and Voices of Spirit to perform works composed for larger choruses.

The Duquesne University Pappert Women’s Chorale is comprised of approximately 35 women. As with the Men’s Chorale, these students are pooled not only from within the music school, but from other disciplines and degree programs. Their repertoire ranges from classical and folk music, sung in a variety of languages, through modern popular music and jazz standards. The Women’s Chorale performs both independently and as a large ensemble with Duquesne’s other choral groups.

This popular series of free chamber music concerts takes place at St. Mary of the Mount Parish on Mt. Washington. It affords music students a community outreach opportunity while providing the community with enjoyable music of the highest quality.

The performances are organized by Director of Choral Organizations Christine Jordanoff with the assistance of the Rev. Michael J. Stumpf, pastor of St. Mary of the Mount, and the parish’s Director of Liturgical Music, Amanda Plazek, a recent graduate of the University’s organ performance program.

Duquesne University’s guitar ensembles offer students a chance to perform exciting guitar repertoire in two distinct styles: classic guitar, under the direction of Michael Chapman, and jazz guitar, under the direction of Mark Koch and Kenneth Karsh.

The classic ensemble performs music from all styles of the 400 years of classic guitar development. The jazz guitar ensemble performs arrangements in the traditional jazz and jazz-fusion styles with a rhythm section. Students are encouraged to submit their own arrangements, which are performed each semester. Both ensembles have gained regional and national attention, with featured performances at local jazz venues and conventions as well as at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Music Hall and the Tri-State Guitar’s Finest Hour recitals.
