MARCH 26, 2017 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
The Church’s liturgy, on this the fourth Sunday of
Lent, invites us to retrace one of the fundamental
dynamics of our baptismal re-birth through the
Gospel account of the healing of the “man born
blind.” It is the passage from the darkness of sin and
error to the Light of God, who is the Risen Christ.
This Sunday is known as Laetare Sunday and is a
Sunday of joy. Lent is half over, and Easter is
enticingly near.

MARCH 26, 2017 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
On Peace & Social Justice
Dear Parishioners:
I want to thank all the Parishioners for donating money to the Peace and Social Justice Ministry
which allows us to help the homeless, poor and the most vulnerable in Hawaii and abroad. If you
thought the money was being used specifically for the homeless in Hawaii at the Next Step Shelter,
please know that we also use the money donations for all the projects of the Peace and Social Justice
Ministry. If you would like your donations restricted only to the Next Step Shelter, please notate
“Next Step Shelter” on the memo line of your checks. Otherwise, we will use the donations for other
projects within the Peace and Social Justice Ministry. With your generous donations, the Peace and
Social Justice Ministry projects include:
Providing meals for the Next Step Shelter, Waikiki homeless Ministry, and families with babies
living in tents on the sidewalk.
Purchasing diapers, clothing, school supplies and Christmas gifts for Hawaii homeless children.
Providing food donations to Sts. Peter and Paul food pantry and Angel NetWork food pantry.
Purchasing supplies for the Hygiene kits which are distributed to the homeless here in Hawaii.
Partnering up with IHS’ relocation program to reunite the homeless with families on the
mainland by providing a home and a support system.
Aiding homeless families moving into housing.
Providing food to parishioners in need.
Participating in the Honolulu Habitat for Humanity where we build homes and hope for people of
Hawaii.
And with your help last year we were able to:
Bring clean water filters to Africa and Indonesia.
Supply hygiene kits to the poor and homeless in the Philippines and Indonesia who have no access
to medical care.
We are working on placing the order for the water filter kits for which we currently raised funds;
additionally, allocating funding for a community that does not have toilets as sanitation and clean
water go hand in hand; and allocating funding for the most vulnerable in society, the unborn.
The Peace and Social Justice Ministry at Mary Star of the Sea is listening to the voice of the poor and
vulnerable and being moved to action. And the “peace” we seek with justice must be constructed day
after day with compassion, solidarity, fraternity, and collaboration on everyone's part. God bless you
and thank you for doing your part to bring peace and social justice to the least of our brothers and
sisters.
With God’s Peace,
Deacon Fernando Ona

MARCH 26, 2017 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
Lenten Reflection on Spring
An inexhaustible source of human unhappiness is
the tendency to recall and relive painful past
events. In no time at all you can find yourself
digging up regrettable past events, painful
memories and long-held resentments.
Fortunately, Spring reminds us that God is
forever looking forward. Bulbs are ready to burst
forth. New blades of grass emerge. Buds appear
on tree branches. All of creation moves forward.
Shouldn’t we as well?
“The things of the past shall not be remembered
or come to mind.”
Major Alert!!!
Attention: To all Parishioners holding “My
Offertory” Donation Envelopes:
A major printing error was discovered in these
collection envelopes. Although the dates are in
sequence, the Mass designations are in error.
Example: If you will notice, the envelope for this
Sunday, March 26th, shows it to be “Easter
Sunday,” when it should read the “Fourth Sunday
of Lent.”
All the envelopes there after have incorrect Mass
designations on them. Please know that we have
since resolved the problem with the printers.
Since the dates are correct, you may continue
using the envelopes by simply crossing out the
Mass designation, and writing in the correct
designation in its place. You can do this by con-
sulting a Catholic calendar, or simply calling the
Parish Office at 734-0396.
We apologize for any and all inconvenience this
may have caused, and thank you for your under-
standing.
Laetare Sunday
Fourth Sunday of Lent
"Rejoice, Jerusalem! Be glad for her, you who
love her; rejoice with her, you who mourned for
her, and you will find contentment at her
consoling breasts.”
This Sunday was formerly called "Laetare
Sunday" since its mood and theme was one of
hope and rejoicing that Easter was near. In the
reformed calendar this Sunday is not different
from the other Sundays of Lent even though the
entrance antiphon for the day still begins with the
Latin word "laetare" and the vestments worn by
the celebrant are rose-colored, not violet. The day
is important because it is the day of the second
scrutiny in preparation for the baptism of adults
at the Easter Vigil.
(Latin “laetare” means “to rejoice.)

Gospel Reflection

Seen Jesus Lately?
If you want to “see” Jesus, you know where to
look, right? Just stop in at your neighborhood
church and the Lord will be there during Mass on
the altar in the consecrated bread and wine, or in
the tabernacle, or in a monstrance during adora-
tion or benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
But He is to be seen in other places as well. Scrip-
ture and the church teach us that God is present
in others, in the poor, and in the image and like-
ness that looks back at us in the mirror. Church
is a great place to see Jesus. So is the rest of the
world.
“You have seen Him, and the one speaking with
you is He.”

Mahalo to our very own Mary, Star of the Sea 6th graders for a successful Market Day event! As a
follow up to the novel "Lemonade War" by Jacqueline Davies, Middle School English teacher, Mrs.
Lydia Green, put project-based learning into action. Sixth graders were expected to use the
entrepreneur lessons learned from their novel to design a product, create a business plan and sell
their product at MSOS’s annual Market Day. The students from 1st grade thru 8th grade enjoyed
spending their market dollars on yummy treats, squish balls, homemade slime and lots lots more!!!
Meanwhile, 6th graders celebrated by calculating their market day net profits! What a wonderful
way to have lots of fun, serve people, and learn!

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS:
FIRST READING: 1Samuel 16:1b,6-7,10-13a -- This reading con-
tains, at best, references to King David. The figure of David may be a
prefigurement of the anointing to Messiahship of Jesus for his mission.
Whatever the reason for its selection for this day, the theme of the lit-
urgy is better reflected in the other two readings for they present impli-
cations and applications of the baptism of the believer.
SECOND READING: Ephesians 5:8-14 -- This reading is particu-
larly significant because throughout the season of Lent the community
has been urged to cast aside deeds of darkness and walk in the brilliance
of the light of Christ. In this reading, for the first time during Lent, the
darkness-light theme which will be so predominant at Easter is enunci-
ated.
GOSPEL: John 9:1-41 -- In this lengthy narrative, John develops
the contrasting approaches to Jesus in three stages, interweaving the
blind man’s expanding insight and deepening faith (the writer often uses
“seeing” as a near equivalent of “believing.” )
