PASTOR’S CORNER

All Saints & All Souls: Feasts of Friendship

Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Our lives are lived in a communion of love: The Father pours Himself out in self-gift to the Son; the Son pours Himself out in self-gift to the Father; and their love is so perfect that it is a Person: The Holy Spirit. This is the Divine Life, and because we are called to intimately participate in this perpetual exchange of love (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, #221), this life is ours...What a gift! We mirror this communion of love in the way that we live the friendship to which Jesus calls us (cf. Jn. 15:15). In the feasts which we celebrate this week—“All Saints” and “All Souls”—we are reminded that the communion of love and friendship to which all Christians are invited stretches far beyond what our merely physical eyes can see (cf. 1 Cor. 2:9). We live our lives of spiritual friendship not only amongst ourselves here on earth, but also with those who have gone before us. Some of our spiritual friends have died in God’s grace and now live with Him in Heaven. It is these people whom we call “saints”—human persons just like us who lived lives of heroic virtue and Christian love, and who now enjoy the rewards of their labors in that communion of life with God which has no end. We also have spiritual friends who have gone before us, but who need our united prayer so that they, too, can be received home into Heaven. It is these people whom we call “the faithful departed”—human persons just like us who, while dying in the state of grace, still need to be further purified in order to enjoy that beautiful and eternal reward of heavenly life. In traditional Catholic parlance, this communion of love shared between us, the saints, and the faithful departed is called the “Church militant”, the “Church glorified”, and the “Church suffering”. We—the baptized faithful here on earth—are the “Church militant”: we live, we love, and we strive, engaging in unseen warfare against forces seen and unseen (cf. Eph. 6:12) who are not of God, and whom we must overcome with God’s grace in order to be received fully at the end of our earthly pilgrimage into that eternal life which is rightly ours. Those who have gone before us and are now in Heaven are the saints, the “Church glorified”, giving the gift of themselves to God and souls unceasingly, constantly nourished and enlivened by God’s intimate presence. Those who have gone before us and are in need of our prayer are the “Church suffering”, the souls of the faithful departed who are in that state of purification we call “Purgatory”, and who depend on us in order to be counted among the saints. We live our friendship with these people—the saints and the faithful departed—through prayer. The saints and the souls of the faithful departed are just as much our friends (if not more!) as those friends we enjoy here on earth. The saints know us: They know our struggles, our strengths, our weakness, our blind spots, and our gifts. Just in the same way we may turn to a friend on earth whom we believe to be close to God and say, “Please, pray for me”, so we turn to the saints—infinitely closer to God because of their heavenly life with Him—and say the same: “Please, pray for me, pray with me, and help me to be someday where you are”. We may find that certain saints “call” to us: Maybe our baptismal or confirmation patrons have a special place in our heart. Perhaps there are saints whom our own particular cultures often look to for solace and guidance, or a family devotion that still runs strong. Reading about their lives brings us closer to knowing them as friends, and just as in earthly life, so, too, in the spiritual life: The more friends we have, the better! Just as we need the saints to someday be where they are, so the souls of the faithful departed need us to be in Heaven, too. A common opinion held by several ancient Church Fathers and generally accepted today amongst many orthodox Catholic theologians is that these souls—the “faithful departed”—cannot any longer do anything of themselves to attain their heavenly reward, and so they depend upon us and our prayer to help them home. As in our friendship with the saints, we may feel “called” into prayer for certain souls. Perhaps we have lost someone very dear to us; maybe there are unresolved family wounds which still need to be healed; or, it could be that we are drawn to pray for people whom we did not know in this life, but whom God has placed on our heart so that we can intercede for them and pray them home to Heaven. We can never go wrong in praying for the souls of the faithful departed. While it is common in the modern day to automatically speak of our dear ones who have died as being in Heaven, the truth is that we cannot know that for sure in this life. We can never go wrong with prayer. Prayer is our treasured offering to the souls of the faithful departed, our expression of love for their greatest good, and our gift of hope for their eternal homecoming. It is also our way to remain in communion with them in Christ. If the souls we are praying for are already in Heaven, God takes our prayer and does something beautiful with it for someone else. No gift in the spiritual life is ever lost! St. Paul reminds us that we are called “to share the lot of the saints in light” (Col. 1:12). Through All Saints Day, and All Souls Day, these wonderful feasts of spiritual friendship, we discover more deeply with our spiritual friends the communion of love from which we are born, and to which we are called in a life without end. Father Cassian Associate Pastor

In Memoriam

We invite Family members and friends to join in celebrating

a special Memorial Mass, Saturday November 7th at 5:15 pm, honoring all who have died. We especially honor those loved ones who were buried from Mary Star between 11/01/2014 - 10/31/2015. Their names will be written on a scroll and placed in the Sanctuary symbolizing the mutual love that continues to grow between us and those who have entered the joy of heaven. We invite those who wish to bring flowers of any color, who can then place on the altar and be part of the procession. If you have any concerns or comments, please contact Maria Palacios at (310) 833-3541 ext. 201. Keep the families and loved ones in your prayers.

Winner of 4th Annual Pro-Life Essay Contest Abortion

God stated in the Bible that murdering is inhuman and wrong. Abortion is when you deliberately kill the life inside a woman so that it does not end with the result of the birth of a child. It is only in abortion that someone is killed but has not violated the law. This is gravely wrong, and this is why abortion is wrong. At the moment of conception, the baby is a living human being. Inside the womb the baby grows, feels, and hears. When an abortion is happening the baby also responds by trying to fight for their life although they have no say in it. Resulting in their death, although there have been some cases in which babies have survived the abortion. Sometimes the conditions of a pregnancy are catastrophic. Perchance the woman was raped. The baby could have been diagnosed with a defect. Or the woman's health might be in jeopardy. Nevertheless, one tragedy is not answered with another. By killing the child, rape is not erased. A child's defect is not cured by taking his life. Also, we do not avoid all health issues by not giving another life their chance. Science has stated it many times. Unborn babies are living, their own individual, and unique. From the moment of conception, a new human life exists. Ending this life is not ending "possible+" life, it is ending a life. An innocent child does not deserve to die because his parents were irresponsible. A child is completely innocent no matter the situation. A child did not decide that his parents would have intercourse. An unborn child is always innocent and should never be punished for their parent's crimes. Abortion also creates new problems and breaks relationships and families. First and foremost, abortion is a mortal sin and should not be a solution. Under God's law, abortion is wrong. In the Bible, there are many verses, which state that the killing of babies is against the religion, immoral, and sinful. In the Bible, the Fifth Commandment is "Thou shall not kill." Therefore, followers of this, especially those who are Christian, should be punished for such a crime. Abortion is never the answer to a problem. A tragedy is not answered by committing another. The fetus, the innocent human life whose only protection in the world is their mother's womb can no longer feel protected because even its very own mother has the option to take their life with ease. Yet that baby did nothing to deserve to have its life taken away so abruptly. How can a baby who can feel, breathe, and move be destined to die without ever doing anything wrong? In our constitution, we are ALL given the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Unborn babies should also be given these rights as well.

Our Student Council creates a “Teen Room” that is reserved for 8th graders to watch scary movies and to eat treats! And of course we all indulge in pizza, lumpia, hot dogs and candy apples! Thank you to all the parents whose hard work makes this day possible for the children.

This week we also recognized “Say No To Drugs” Week. Each day our children wore symbols of their pledge to live a drug free life. Teachers added grade appropriate curriculum lessons to the classroom.

This week we highlight our Schoolwide Learning Expectation:

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

° 8th is studying the forming of the United States Government. This week they were discussing the New Jersey Plan and comparing it to the Virginia Plan and how the new states were struggling to have a voice.

° 6th grade is beginning a unit on reading non-fiction; they are reading a short story, Woodsong, by Gary Paulson. They will learn about perspective and point of view and then rewrite the story altering the point of view.

° 4th grade is multiplying 2 digit numbers. They are carrying numbers, using a zero place holder and learning the importance of lining everything up correctly!

° 2nd grade is continuing their study of the Holy Trinity. This week they are focusing on the Holy Spirit.

God Bless You, Noreen Maricich Principal
