Scope and Contents Note
The Mary Stevenson Collection documents the people and places of the South Carolina counties ofAnderson, Oconee, and Pickens—especially the Clemson-Pendleton area—through the research of MaryStevenson, a Clemson University librarian and chair of the Research and Publication Committee of theFoundation for Historic Restoration in the Pendleton Area. The Collection contains articles, bills, bookchapters, booklets, brochures, chronologies, clippings, correspondence, genealogies, invoices, maps, negatives, orders, pamphlets, photographs, plats, postcards, publications, research notes, sketches, andcopies/transcripts of original documents among other items. The materials in the collection date from1784 to 1995, with most of the items dating between 1960 and 1988. However, there are significantgaps within the overall date span. Much of the material in this collection was created or received byStevenson as a result of her duties as the chair of the Foundation for Historic Restoration in PendletonArea Research and Publication Committee and as part of her research on the history of the Upstate areaof South Carolina, particularly the Clemson-Pendleton area. Some of this material was used for articlesin the Foundation’s newsletter. There is also personal correspondence in the series as well as a fewitems relating to her career as a librarian at the Clemson University Libraries. The African-Americansection focuses on African-Americans in the Clemson/Pendleton area and includes six spirituals collectedby Robert Adger Bowen during the 1880’s. Folders within the section are arranged alphabetically byfolder title. The Miscellaneous section is mainly Foundation for Historic Restoration in Pendleton Area
