RUSHING FALL NIPS MEANMARY TO GIVE BROWNFIFTH STRAIGHT DIANA
Star turf mare Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) avenged a loss
as the favorite in last year=s GI Diana S. Sunday at Saratoga,
wearing down pacesetting Mean Mary (Scat Daddy) in a thrilling
stretch duel to earn her sixth Grade I victory. The win also gave
trainer Chad Brown a remarkable fifth consecutive score in the
Diana and sixth overall.
Named a >TDN Rising Star= for her impressive debut victory at
Belmont three seasons ago, the e Five Racing Thoroughbreds
colorbearer backed that distinction up with a victory in the GI
Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Reeling off a trio of Grade I
triumphs in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S., Longines
Just A Game S. and Coolmore Jenny Wiley S. from fall of 2018 to
last spring, she couldn=t quite go with champion stablemate
Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) when runner-up in last
year=s Diana. Producing her only dud thus far with a fourth in the
GI First Lady S. to close out her 4-year-old campaign, the bay
bounced back with a conquest of the GIII Beaugay S. in her
seasonal bow before a successful, course-record-setting title
defense in the Jenny Wiley last out.
Favored per usual, though not by a large margin as Mean Mary
attracted robust interest as the close second choice, Rushing
Fall broke sharply following a gate delay that resulted in the late
scratch of longshot Secret Message (Hat Trick {Jpn}). Cont. p3
NO MORE DOUBTS, MAXIMUM SECURITY IS
BACKThe Week in Review, by Bill Finley
When Maximum Security (New Year=s Day) had to fight his
way to a narrow victory in the GII San Diego H., it was fair to
question whether or not this was the same horse that had been
so outstanding throughout his career for trainer Jason Servis.
Yes, he won that day, but the dominance and brilliance he had
shown on so many occasions for a trainer who was subsequently
indicted for allegedly doping his horses was not there.
Then again, it seemed unwise to write him off after one race.
His trip in the San Diego was not ideal as he broke on top, led
and then was taken back off the pace to avoid a speed duel
before coming on again in the stretch to narrowly prevail. It was
also his first race in five months and trainer Bob Baffert said
after the fact that he only had the horse 80% cranked. Cont. p6

Rushing Fall Gives Brown Fifth Straight Diana cont. from p1
Allowing her main rival to go on with it heading into the
clubhouse turn under Javier Castellano, the multimillionaire
traveled in a clear second up the backstretch behind modest
fractions of :23.60 and :48.38. Moving up to the leader=s flank as
the quintet bunched up through three-quarters in 1:11.90, she
drew on even terms nearing the lane and the top pair sped away
from the other three soon after straightening for home. Sticking
her nose in front for the first time at the sixteenth pole, Rushing
Fall narrowly did the better work from there and struck the wire
a neck to the good, securing her 11th success in 14 career trips
to the post. It was 2 1/2 lengths back to Sistercharlie in third.
AShe knows how to win. She's a remarkable horse,@ Brown
said. AThis is a horse that has won Grade Is in four straight years.
This is very rare company to do this. She's a horse of a lifetime
for anybody--for an owner, for a trainer, for racing. We're very
fortunate that [e Five=s] Bob Edwards put her back in training.
Her last race of the year last year was not good, she's worth a lot
of money and they could easily have sold her and bred her. They
gave her the time off and we sent her down to Stonestreet in
Ocala like we do every winter where they do a fantastic job and
then my team got a hold of her and took it from there. They
executed like they always have, and the filly really came
through. She's special.@
The final running time of 1:45.88 represented the third-fastest
clocking in the 82-year history of the Diana, behind Hard Not to
Like (Hard Spun)=s 1:45.22 in 2015 and Hall of Famer Waya (Fr)
(Faraway Son)=s 1:45.40 in 1978.
AThe plan was to go to the lead,@ Castellano said. AI broke out
of the gate and tried to send to dictate the pace, but Mean
Mary never took up and tried to take the lead.@

RUSHING FALL made it back-to-back Grade 1 wins and remained
perfect this season with a sensational victory in Sunday’s
$500,000 Diana S. (G1) at Saratoga, getting 1 1/8
miles on turf in 1:45.88, the 3rd -fastest time in the 82-year
history of the race.
She now has 6 G1 wins and is a G1 winner each year she

Trophy presentation for the Diana | Sarah Andrew
AI tried to ride smart, it's a mile and an eighth and I thought it
was smarter to save something for the end,@ he continued.
AToday, we were very fortunate. I rode her like she was the best
filly in the race. She's very tactical. She doesn't have to be on
the lead, she can come from behind also, but I didn't see much
other speed in the race, so we tracked the other filly every
single step of the way and when I asked her, she responded. She
knows how to win. I'm so lucky to ride her because she's one of
the best fillies I've rode in my life.@
AIt means a lot,@ Brown added of his fifth straight Diana win.
AThis is a very important race that we point for every year and
we've been fortunate through the years to have horses that
really fit. She's a great horse and she ran a super race today.@

Regarding Sistercharlie, who finished third for the third
consecutive race, the first time she=s gone three tries without a
victory in her career, Brown said, AI thought she took a nice step
forward towards the Breeders' Cup today. This course is very
speed-favoring. It's hard to imagine a scenario, no matter what
the pace is, where she is going to be able to make up that much
ground. It's just the way it's played all meet. I thought she ran
much better today than she did in the Ballston Spa and we can
potentially run her one more prep before the Breeders' Cup. I
can see her rounding into form right at the right time.@

Week in Review cont. from p1
That=s what made Saturday=s GI TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar
such an important race for Maximum Security, maybe even the
most important race of his career. The race was all but certain to
answer all the questions that had surrounded the horse over the
last three weeks. A defeat or even a hard-pressed victory would
be seen as proof positive that he wasn=t the same. An impressive
win would be seen as affirmation that he=s just as good now for
Baffert as he was for Servis. This time, there would be no gray
area.
Maximum Security answered every question and quelled all
the doubts. He went to the front, relaxed for jockey Abel Cedillo
and drew off to win by three lengths in what was a markedly
improved performance over the San Diego. It wasn=t exactly the
toughest field he has ever faced, but that didn=t matter. He went
out there and left no doubt that no matter who trains him this is
a very good horse.

The Maximum Security who won the $20-million Saudi Cup,
the GI Cigar Mile H., the GI TVG.com Haskell Invitational S., the
GI Xpressbet Florida Derby and crossed the wire first in the GI
Kentucky Derby was back.
AI felt pretty good about him,@ Baffert said Sunday. AIt was a
challenge but I knew down deep that he is a race horse, that he
is a good horse. I was never worried that he wasn=t going to run
because he needed certain medications. When I got him I knew
he was a runner.@
Baffert said he saw noticeable improvement in Maximum
Security from his prep for the Pacific Classic and the Pacific
Classic itself.
AThe San Diego woke him up and he was training great,@ he
said. AWe figured him out. I knew going in that he was going to
run a big race and that he was the best horse. When I got him
he was a very sound, healthy horse and he still is. Unfortunately,
he=s been through a lot.@
Baffert=s job from here is to continue to get the best out of
Maximum Security through what will be his final year of racing.
The major goal, of course, will be the GI Breeders= Cup Classic
and Baffert said he may have one more start between then and
now. He=s predicting that Maximum Security will only get better.
AI can see that he is going to get stronger and stronger and
better and better and by the Breeders= Cup he should be doing
great,@ the trainer said.
Especially when considering the abilities of potential rivals like
Tiz the Law (Constitution), Tom=s d=Etat (Smart Strike) and
Improbable (City Zip), Maximum Security will have to bring his A
game in order to win. That shouldn=t be a problem. The A game
is back.
Gmax, It=s Not Just the Turf Equibase announced last week that the Gmax system will no
longer be used on turf races at Del Mar during the summer
meet. Instead, they will be hand timed. While admitting there
was a problem timing the turf races, they maintained that
everything is going just fine when it comes to dirt races.
AThe times produced by the Equibase GPS System for dirt races
have proven to be highly accurate and will continue to be
provided,@ read a statement from Equibase.
Huh?
On one weekend alone at Del Mar, the Gmax system failed
badly when it comes to recording dirt times. On the weekend of
Aug. 1 and 2, there were six dirt races in which changes had to
be made after the original time was posted on the infield board
when the horses crossed the wire. The list includes the GI Bing
Crosby S. Based on those races alone, how can Equibase claim
that the system is Ahighly accurate?@ Cont. p8

Dirt races at Del Mar are being timed using the Gmax system
Benoit Photo
Perhaps the problems are worse on the turf, but they have
also been cropping up in dirt races and it=s hard to believe that
the problems have been limited to Aug. 1 and 2.
For the most part, Equibase has been reluctant to admit that
there are any serious problems when it comes to the Gmax
system, which relies on GPS technology. But there=s more than
enough evidence out there to conclude that Gmax has plenty of
bugs and, in its current state, is an inferior way of timing races
when compared to the teletimer system. Equibase should not
be satisfied with a system that gets it right most of time.
Equibase argues that Gmax is more than a timing system, that
it can provide ample benefits for the industry, everything from
timing workouts to creating slick looking graphics packages. But
to the people whose bets provide the revenue structure that
drives the sport, all that really matters is accurate times. Surely,
Equibase and its parent company the Jockey Club, must
understand that.
The solution to this problem seems obvious. Equibase doesn=t
have to throw its own product under the bus, but it should
acknowledge that there are problems with Gmax. Do that and
then go back to the teletimer system at the Gmax tracks with a
promise that the GPS technology won=t be put back in until its
flaws can be fixed. At the same time, continue to use Gmax for
all else that it does. Just not to time races.
In New Jersey, No Transparency Not everyone agreed with NYRA=s decision to let trainer
Wayne Potts race at Saratoga on Sunday, but everyone should
applaud them for how they handled the situation. Transparency
matters, and they get that.
Potts was the subject of a recent story in the Paulick Report,
which reported that he had been told to leave Laurel because of
allegations that he was acting as a front for trainer Marcus
Vitali.
NYRA got ahead of the story and released a statement that
explained why Potts was allowed to race there. It was explained
that since no regulatory body had taken action against Potts and
since he was licensed in New York, NYRA did not feel there were
any grounds for not allowing him to run.
Compare that to how New Jersey handled the same situation.
On the same day that Potts competed at Saratoga and won with
his lone starter on the card, he had two horses in on the
program at Monmouth. One was scratched and one was not.
Why was that the case and was Monmouth taking any action
against Potts?
That question was directed by the TDN to steward Steve
Pagano, who politely explained that the Monmouth stewards
are not allowed to talk to the press. Pagano supplied a number
for the New Jersey Racing Commission. Calls were made to that
number but no one there even answered the phone.
Potts started one horse per day on both Saturday and Sunday
at Monmouth, so he obviously hasn=t been banned there, but
the public has every right to know just what his status is and
why one of his horses was scratched on Friday. Muzzling the
stewards is ridiculous.

Tom Drury talks top Derby contender Art Collector
This is the same racing commission that can=t get it right when
it comes to paying out purses at Monmouth. The payments have

ART COLLECTOR TEAM AWAITING MANY
>FIRSTS= OF DERBY DAY by Katie Ritz
On a cloudless August morning in Goshen, Kentucky, a steady
stream of horses step on and off the synthetic track at Skylight
Training Center. It=s a tranquil, scenic drive along Liberty Road to
get to Skylight, and quiet still upon pulling into the training
center=s drive.
But at a barn towards the far end of the property, there=s a
certain effervescence at Tom Drury=s stable. The magnetic
energy is palpable even in watching the staff go about their daily
tasks.
AIt=s a lot busier around here lately,@ Drury said with a smile
after giving instructions for a mid-morning set. AWe aren=t used
to all this attention out here.@
The rural training center has been in the limelight lately due to
an imposing 3-year-old colt bound for the GI Kentucky Derby.
Art Collector (Bernardini) is the star of the show at the Drury
barn, his trainer noting that while the horse is perhaps a touch
spoiled these days, the extra attention is all well deserved.
AI=m really happy for my staff,@ he said. AWe=ve had a lot of
good horses go through the barn that we=ve been associated
with from afar. Now all of a sudden my staff gets the
opportunity where they=re the ones people see galloping the
horse on TV, or leading the horse in the paddock. It=s just
special. All these guys work really hard, and it=s a team effort.

Art Collector is special for Drury himself in many ways, one
being that the colt provided him with his first-ever graded stakes
victory.
AWho wins their first graded stakes in the Blue Grass?@ Drury
said. AThat was an unbelievable day. My program is normally set
up for us to go into Keeneland hoping to just win a race every
year. That=s our goal. To go in and win that one, it was pretty
special.@
After earning 100 points toward the Derby at Keeneland, it
was initially uncertain if the son of Bernardini would see the
starting gate again before the first Saturday in September.
AI felt like the Blue Grass was the first time this year he had
gotten tested at all,@ his conditioner said. AAnd he certainly
passed the test, but in the back of my mind, I was thinking if
we=re going to face some of the horses that are going to show
up for the Derby, we needed one more to get to where we
wanted to be.@
When Art Collector streaked past the rest of the field to win
the Aug. 9 Runhappy Ellis Park Derby by more than three
lengths, Drury said it was exactly the final prep they were
hoping for.
AIt was storybook,@ he said. AWe got what we were looking for
out of it, but without having to do too much.@
The win marked a monumental day for Ellis Park. Announcer
Jimmy McNerney noted it as Athe biggest day in the track=s 98-
year history.@ The victory had similar resonance with Drury, who
has shipped many horses down to Henderson over his 38-year
career, and remembers making his second career start there
with the first horse he ever trained.
Art Collector has been back at his home base in Goshen for
two weeks and is preparing for the 25-mile ship to Louisville any
day now. On Friday, he worked an easy four furlongs over the
all-weather track there in :49.10.
A[He=s been on] just a maintenance schedule,@ Drury said of
the colt=s training regime following the return from Ellis. AHe=s fit
and he should be ready to roll. I=m thinking sometime this week,
we=ll take him on into Churchill. The next work will probably be a
little more serious, and hopefully everything will continue to go
the way it=s went so far.@
Drury shared that the bay enjoys his fair share of grazing hours
at his current residence under the watchful eye of long-time
assistant trainer Jose Garcia.
AJose doesn=t like to let anyone get close to him,@ he said.
AWhether you come in the morning or afternoon, there=s a good
chance you=re going to see Jose grazing Art Collector
somewhere on the farm. If there=s anything that needs to be
done to Art Collector, Jose does it himself--sometimes to a fault,
because we=ve still got 60 other horses here.@ Cont. p11

Art Collector romps in the GII Blue Grass S. | Coady
When asked what this thrilling ride has meant to him
personally, Drury hesitated to respond for just a moment.
AI=ve told everybody, that=s the one thing I struggle talking
about. I mean, gosh, what do you say? A guy gives you an
opportunity with this horse at this level, and you=ve never been
in this situation before. I feel like Bruce [Lunsford, owner] has
faith in me and my ability. I certainly have faith in my ability.@
For both owner and trainer, it will be their first experience
seeing their name listed on the Kentucky Derby race card.
AFor all of us, it=s our first trip down this road,@ Drury said. ASo
we=re all excited and it means the world. It=s why you get up
every day, to try to get yourself in a situation like this.@
While jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. is no stranger to major Grade
I wins, a victory with Art Collector would mark his first trip to the
Kentucky Derby winner=s circle.
ABrian and I are good friends, and he called me last winter
asking if I had him [Art Collector],@ Drury recounted. AI figured at
that point he must be pretty special. If the jockeys are trying to
find him, then he must be alright.@
Drury said he plans to leave the details of the trip over the
Churchill Downs course in the hands of Hernandez.
AI would expect the perfect scenario would be for us to be
somewhat forward,@ Drury noted. ABut up to this point I=ve let
Brian worry about that every race so far, and I=m going to let
that be his problem. It=s hard to make a plan for the Derby
because there are so many factors that come into play that are
out of your controlBthe field size, what everybody else is doing,
your trip and things of that nature.@
Despite the uncertainties, Drury said he gets butterflies of
excitement, rather that nervousness, when thinking about the
walkover to the paddock.

Tiz the Law works in the dark Sunday at Saratoga | Sarah Andrew
AThe big thing I=m thinking about is just getting the horse there
safe and sound,@ he said. AAs the trainer, that=s your major
concern. Just make him as good as you can possibly make him
for that particular day. As for everything else, I=m really not
nervous. It=s more of an excitement I think, then anything. I=m
looking forward to it and just hoping to take our best shot, and
hopefully he=ll keep doing what he=s been doing.@
TIZ THE LAW DRILLS FIVE-FURLONG BULLET
IN PENULTIMATE DERBY BREEZE
Sackatoga Stable=s Tiz the Law (Constitution), a looming
prohibitive favorite in the GI Kentucky Derby, recorded his
second-to-last breeze before the Sept. 5 Run for the Roses when
covering five furlongs in a bullet :59.47 (1/39) over the Saratoga
main track Sunday morning. The Barclay Tagg trainee was
scheduled to breeze Saturday at the Spa, but had his work
pushed back a day after a sudden downpour drastically changed
the track conditions.
Working under cover of darkness at 5:30 a.m. Sunday under
exercise rider Heather Smullen, Tiz the Law clicked off his three-
furlong split in :35 3/5 before galloping out six panels in 1:12 4/5
and up in 1:26 flat (XBTV video).
AIt went fast enough, but not too fast,@ Tagg told the NYRA
notes team. AIt was a little quicker than usual, but it wasn't too
quick for him. He's a pretty fast horse. I told Heather I wanted a
good work in him. I didn't want to set any records out there. I
wanted her to keep a good snug hold on him. I wanted a good
work.@
The breeze was Tiz the Law=s first since romping with a career-
best 109 Beyer in the GI Runhappy Travers S. Aug. 8. He is
scheduled to breeze once more next weekend before shipping
to Churchill Downs. Cont. p13

AThis is an important workout. In one way, I don't have any
way to make up for it,@ Tagg said. AIt's the first thing he has done
in the last two or three weeks. That's why I needed a good work
today. If he goes a little too slow going on top of the race, I
wouldn't want that, but I don't want it too fast either. It's going
to have to be almost perfect. If it's just like today, that would be
fine. I can only work him two times before this race. To me, this
work was more important.@
Smullen added that the darkness affected Tiz the Law=s focus
in the early part of the work before the colt buckled down for
the stretch run.
AIt was a little dark and he wasn't quite as focused going down
the backside,@ she said. AHe was playing around. At the
three-eighths pole, I took my stick out. He stayed nice and
straight. I never had to ask him. At the eighth pole, he saw a
horse. I didn't have to do anything. He finished up his work.
Galloping out, he just kept going. He's good at what he does.@
Elsewhere on the Derby contender worktab Sunday, John C.
Oxley=s Enforceable (Tapit) drilled six furlongs in 1:12.20 (1/2)
Sunday morning at Churchill. Last seen running fourth in the GII
Toyota Blue Grass S., the gray worked in the fog under Adam
Beschizza in company with stablemate Ghost Fighter (Tapit) and
got his final five-eighths in :59.20.
AHe's doing extremely well," said trainer Mark Casse. AThis was
his last big breeze. They caught him in 12 and 1, but he probably

Grade I winner Mo Forza, unseen since an off-the-board finish
in the GI Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational S., came back
sharper than ever with a convincing victory in the GII Del Mar
Mile H. Sunday.
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 14 OF 15 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • AUGUST 24, 2020
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Taking six tries to break his maiden, the bay earned his cap andgown Sept. 29 on the Santa Anita turf and repeated at 18-1 in
the GII Twilight Derby. Scoring as the narrow favorite in the GI
Hollywood Derby, he made it four in a row in the GII Mathis
Brothers Mile S. before fading to ninth with a wide journey inthe Jan. 25 Pegasus Turf.
Away a step slowly while removing blinkers as the heavy
favorite, Mo Forza traveled in a distant sixth as two longshots
went at through a :22.59 quarter and :45.84 half. Patientlyhandled by Flavien Prat while saving ground on the far turn, he
crept up on the tiring leaders approaching the lane and split
horses soon after straightening. Bursting to the fore, he opened
up several lengths in just a few strides, slammed the door insidethe eighth pole and powered past the wire a much-the-best
winner. Restrainedvengence won a photo for the place.
AThat gave me goose pimples,@ said winning trainer Peter
Miller. AI was just hoping I had him tight enough and ready toperform. This was a good group of horses, but he's exceptional.
To see this horse back in the winner's circle is really exciting. He
had a tendency to get rank in his races last year and wanted to
run over horses, so we thought we didn't want that problem thisyear and we took the blinkers off. He's been working without
them and I thought that if it doesn't work out I'm going to look
like an idiot, but thank goodness it worked out. We think the
Breeders' Cup will definitely be the end of the year with onerace in between.@
Pedigree Notes:
One of 62 stakes winners, 34 graded stakes winners and eightGrade I winners for Uncle Mo, Mo Forza is the first foal out of
Inflamed, who sold to Glen Hill Farm for $170,000 at Keeneland
November after his Twilight Derby win and then resold to Shadai
Farm for $525,000 at Keeneland January with his HollywoodDerby score in the rearview. A full-sister to Burns, who won the
GII La Jolla H. over this course in 2011, Inflamed is responsible
for a yearling Munnings colt and produced a filly by Tapiture
May 1 before returning to Uncle Mo.
LUKAS RECOVERED FROM COVID-19, TESTS
NEGATIVE Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who reportedly hadtested positive for coronavirus last week and was in isolation,
has recovered from the illness and received a negative COVID-19
test result, according to a tweet from his grandson Brady Wayne
Lukas Sunday morning. "Wayne has completed the isolation period and has received a
negative test result," Lukas said. "He's back!"
The 84-year-old conditioner was first reported to be positive
for COVID-19 Aug. 12. In a tweet, Brady Lukas said, "Waynerecently tested positive for COVID-19 and has since been
isolating at home and following CDC and health care providerrecommendations. Fortunately, he had not been at work for
several days prior to the first symptom, so no one else at the
barn is impacted."
Editor=s Note: Tuesday, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission
will hold a hearing before the Joint Committee on Licensing,
Occupations, regarding the proposed amended regulationwhich would partially ban the use of Lasix at Kentucky tracks.
The proposed ban would include all 2-year-old horses racing in
Kentucky this year and be extended to stakes races in 2021, and
is being advanced by a national coalition of racetracks andother racing organizations that includes all of Kentucky=s
racetrack operators. On June 1, Franklin (Ky) Circuit Court Judge
Thomas Wingate denied a motion by the Kentucky Horsemen=s
Benevolent and Protective Association (KHBPA) that sought atemporary injunction that would have kept Churchill Downs and
Keeneland from running Lasix-free 2-year-old races, ruling that
the KHBPA had no standing in the case. He later vacated that
ruling to give the organization time to address the issue ofstanding. Jerry Brown, the president of Thoro-Graph, will be
called as one of the witnesses by the KHBPA to represent the
interest of bettors. Brown provided the TDN with the opening
statement he plans to make.
Mr. Chairman and other distinguished members of this
Committee, thank you for the opportunity to address you in
opposition to the proposed amendments to 810 KAR 8:010Section 6 partially banning the use of furosemide (commonly
called ALasix@). I am the President of Thoro-Graph Inc., which
publishes proprietary data used by high-end horseplayers and
horsemen around the country. We currently have about 3,000active customers who bet several times the national average. I
personally bet seven figures annually, and some of our
customers wager through a joint pari-mutuel venture we have
with the New York Racing Association that will handle $25million this year.
The first thing I need to make clear is that I am not pro-drug; in
fact, just the opposite. No one has been fighting longer or
harder than I have to stop the use of performance-enhancingdrugs in our industry. That=s why The Jockey Club invited me to
assist them when they took on the issue with their Safety and
Integrity Committee back in 2008, and in the next few weeks
will be announcing a new project using our data to identifypotential drug cheaters.

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 15 OF 15 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • AUGUST 24, 2020
Having said that: being pro-Lasix is not being pro-drug. Legal
use of Lasix is an entirely separate issue from illegal use of
Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs). There is no serious claim
that Lasix causes unsoundness or other damage to racehorses,
in fact, to the contrary, it helps the ones who need it stay
healthy. There is also not, to my knowledge, even any claim of a
benefit to the business of racing that would come from banning
Lasix, let alone any evidence that would back up that claim.
The idea seems to be that they race without Lasix in Europe,
so we should. Well, American dirt racing is much different than
the grass racing they have over there. In those races they gallop
along early and only run full out the last part of the race. Here,
on dirt, they are going close to full blast the whole way--every
horse in dirt races is tired and decelerating in the stretch, even
the ones that make up ground. Running that way causes far
more stress on the horses, and horsemen will tell you that
bleeding is caused by stress.
The reason racing works as a business is because of wagering.
Bettors pay directly for the purses the horses race for, and thus
indirectly for the paychecks of everyone in the industry,
including ultimately commercial breeders, who only have a
market for their products because buyers have an opportunity
to race for those purses. And the reason racing is so heavily
regulated is those bettors have to be protected, so that they can
have confidence the game they are playing is fair and will
continue to provide the revenue stream for our industry.
If Lasix is banned, more horses will bleed during races, and it
will cause them not to be able to run to their ability. That=s a
fact that nobody even disputes. As a result, there will be no way
anyone handicapping races will have any idea when that will
happen, or to which horses. And they also won=t know whether
a horse that ran poorly last time did so because he bled, unless
he did so visibly, so there will be no way to know how that horse
will run today. And there are only two possibilities--he will run
again untreated for bleeding, which is bad not only for the horse
but for the betting public, or he will be treated with something
else, legal or illegal. But unlike with Lasix, which is listed in the
program, the public won=t know the horse=s status, or how to
evaluate him, in either case.
Do you know who will? There are people who pay for
information like that, and bet accordingly. They will effectively
be insider trading--which is exactly the kind of thing regulation
of racing is meant to avoid, and instead we will be creating a
market for it. Get ready for horses coming off a terrible
performance and listed at 20-1 getting bet down to 2-1, and
winning by 10 lengths. And get ready for the backlash when
honest bettors get upset about it, and take their money
elsewhere, to games where they think they get a fair shake.
When Lasix was first used to treat bleeders, those were the
kind of jump-ups and betting coups we saw, and it=s the reason
Lasix quickly became the only drug listed in the program. For
bettors, that=s the Good Housekeeping Seal Of Approval--it tells
them the horse will get every chance to run up to its natural
level of ability that day. And that is why I have never heard a
horseplayer say they will bet more if Lasix is banned--and many,
like me, will bet less. As in business, uncertainty hinders
investment--and in this case, that investment is wagering.
A point about Aoptics@: Some people apparently think that
banning Lasix will make our game look better to the public, and
to PETA. Those people have never seen a horse bleed badly, like
Demons Begone did on national TV in the 1987 Derby, when he
came back to be unsaddled with blood all over him. If you saw it,
you won=t forget it. And in today=s environment, all it takes is
that happening once, at any track, on any day, if someone with
a cell phone is nearby to take a picture. The photo would quickly
be on the PETA calendar. And what happens if the horse in front
in the Derby bleeds, chokes and stops, with 19 horses right
behind him, on national TV? PETA won=t be calling for the return
of Lasix. They will be calling for a ban of racing.
Finally, I would like to say that the Lasix issue is being
presented as a false choice--either everyone gets to race on it,
or it gets banned. The goal should be to let the horses who need
medicine have it, and to not have the others race on it. This can
be done by having the state vets examine horses to certify they
really are bleeders and therefore eligible for Lasix, which was
the original rule, and by taking away the incentive to use Lasix if
you don=t need it, by having those that do use it carry a weight
penalty. If this issue is dealt with sensibly, within a couple of
years you can have the vast majority of horses racing without
Lasix.

the slight second choice here to Chicks Dig Scars, winner of the
Iowa Stallion Futurity S. here three weeks earlier. Able to clear
from his wide draw with minimal effort, the dark bay cruised
towards the stretch under a quiet ride as Chicks Dig Scars was
pushed along to keep up. Chicks Digs Scars wouldn=t give up in
the stretch, and Bodenheimer was saved by the line. The winner
has a yearling half-sister by Harbor the Gold. His dam produced
a Mor Spirit colt this term before being bred back to that sire.

November, was third in the one-mile GIII Wilshire S. at Santa

claimer last time out July 24. The 6-5 favorite was taken in hand
and settled off the pace as Watch Me Burn (Hold Me Back)
opened up a clear advantage on the front end. The pacesetter
was 2 1/2 lengths in front at the top of the lane, but Querelle

deep stretch with the favorite just getting the better of that foe
in the final jumps to win by a head. The unraced Orbital Affair, in

DOWNLOAD (c, 2, Society's Chairman--Jademarie, by Malibu

find her preferred surface Sunday with a dominant front-
running score. Facing minimal early resistance as she cruised
along through splits of :25.25, :49.49 and 1:13.58, the bay had
plenty left in the tank for the stretch drive, and widened at will
to defeat fellow second timer Uptown Flirt (Speightster) by
6 3/4 lengths. Favored firster Black Sand (GB) (Dubawi {Ire})
advanced ominously heading for home but flattened out in the

was soon at the head of affairs, setting fractions of :21.93 and
:45.90. She extended her advantage down the lane without
being asked and finished geared down and 3 1/4 lengths to the
good of Ensley=s Dream (Smiling Tiger). Harris Farms purchased
Camille C, with Needless to Say in utero, for $25,000 at the 2017

pacesetting Acting Out (Blame) with a powerful late rush to win

CAMPANELLE DOMINATESMORNY TEST
Sent postward as the 17-10 favourite for Sunday=s G1 Darley
Prix Morny at Deauville, Stonestreet Stables= Campanelle (Ire)
(Kodiac {GB}) added lustre to a banner season for Tally-Ho Stud
with a dominant performance in her first outing beyond the five-
furlong trip, good for a berth in the GII Breeders= Cup Juvenile
Turf Sprint. She had opened up with an impressive 3 1/2-length
score over five in her May 31 unveiling at Gulfstream Park,
stepping up to garner Royal Ascot=s June 20 G2 Queen Mary
dash on black-type bow in her only other start, and the April-
foaled bay went straight to the head of affairs in this straight six-
furlong test. Campanelle was comfortable in front for the most
part, but a battle looked in store when rivals stacked up in
behind as she came under pressure approaching the final
furlong. However, any concerns about stretching out to six on
softened ground were quickly dismissed as she found more than
enough under Frankie Dettori=s urgings inside the final furlong to
comfortably hold the vain bids of G2 Coventry S. victor Nando
Parrado (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) and Rhythm Master (Ire) (Dark
Angel {Ire}) by two lengths and a neck, respectively, and remain
undefeated.
AThe ground is bad, but she has a lot of class and overcame
that,@ said Dettori. AShe is much better on good ground and she
is the best we had seen at Royal Ascot. She travelled nicely,
pricked her ears and was relaxed throughout the race. She did it
well today and there are great things to come from this filly.@

NEW TATTERSALLS FIXTURE GETS
UNDERWAY There's nothing very familiar about this year, and in an
ever-changing sales schedule, a new auction takes place this
week at Tattersalls. The mixed August Sale was originally
intended to take place over two days but, such was the demand
for places, it has been extended to three, starting on Monday at
Park Paddocks.
That a sale consisting largely of horses in training has attracted
such a large entry so soon after the traditional Tattersalls July
Sale is not necessarily a positive sign for British racing. But while
some owners are clearly eager to move horses on, the sale was
welcomed in some quarters for the fact that it takes place
before the start of the yearling sales, thus giving people a
chance to reinvest, and we must all hope that is indeed what
happens. Cont. p14

Frankie Dettori performs his patented flying dismount afterCampanelle won the Prix Morny | Scoop Dyga
G1 Darley Prix Morny Cont. from p1
AShe=s a big filly, but with a lot of speed as well and we saw
that right from the start when we started training her down in
Florida,@ said trainer Wesley Ward after securing a third renewal
of the contest. AWhat really impressed me was that she went to
[Royal] Ascot off a very short rest before she won the Queen
Mary. My horses usually get a chance to acclimatise to the
cooler weather over there and have good spacing between their
races. Everything came close together for her and she still won.
ANow that she=s had the time, I=ve really started to see her
blossom at home. We had good spacing from Ascot to the
Morny and she=s grown as well as really thriving on the travel.
She goes from A to B and when she gets to B she just picks right
up. We=re very lucky to have a filly like her, with that long stride
she has, and she=s a lot bigger horse than [previous Morny
winners] No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) or Lady Aurelia (Scat
Daddy), who were real sprinting types.@
Added Ward, AThe G1 Cheveley Park [S. on Sept. 26] closes on
Tuesday and I=ve spoken with Adrian Beaumont [of the
International Racing Bureau], so we=ll nominate for that to keep
her options open. With a filly like this, it suits to space her races
out. We had Hootenanny (Quality Road) finish second in this
race and he went on to win the Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf.
That would probably be more on the agenda, especially as the
Breeders= Cup is on her home track at Keeneland. I think a two-
turn mile will suit.@
Christophe Soumillon, rider of runner-up Nando Parrado (Ire)
(Kodiac {GB}), was never at ease with his mount and explained,
AHe never travelled comfortably and was shying away from the
[stands= side] rail and hanging right the most of the race. I never
had him straightened out in front of me, which is sad because if
he had done so I feel we would have won.@ Cont. p3

Audarya | Scoop Dyga
AUDARYA SURPRISES IN THE ROMANET There was a surprise in store in Sunday=s G1 Darley Prix Jean
Romanet as the James Fanshawe-trained Audarya (Fr) (Wootton
Bassett {GB}) took a significant jump in class to provide her
trainer with a third renewal of this 10-furlong Deauville feature
since 2014. Coming off a Newcastle handicap win over this trip
Aug. 2, the 48-1 shot tracked the pace travelling easily and when
committed by Ioritz Mendizabal grabbed the advantage before
the furlong pole. Challenged by Ambition (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) all
the way to the line, the bay, who sports the silks of Alison
Swinburn, held her at bay to score by a neck, with four lengths
back to Romanciere (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) in third.
AI thought I was riding for a place, but this is a nice bonus,@
Mendizabal admitted. AThe trainer asked me to get a good
position, but more importantly to get her to relax. She wasn=t
supposed to like the ground, but she was very comfortable and
travelled very well on it. I=m not sure how she won like that and
it=s a nice story that Francois Doumen bred her, as I know him
very well.@
Having saddled Ribbons (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) to win this six
years ago and Speedy Boarding (GB) (Shamardal) to follow up
two years later, it is safe to say that the Newmarket-based
handler has previous form where this race is concerned but it
took a leap of the imagination to suggest that Audarya could add
to his tally. No great shakes at three, she took four starts to
break her maiden and when she did it came at lowly Redcar in
June before winning a mile Goodwood handicap and finishing
runner-up in the Listed Prix Coronation at Saint-Cloud in two of
her remaining outings last term.
Returning to finish an encouraging eighth behind this race=s 7-
10 favourite Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in Kempton=s
Listed Snowdrop Fillies= S. over a mile June 3, she backtracked
when sixth in the Listed Pipalong S. also at that trip at Pontefract
July 7 before enjoying a class drop to regain confidence on
Newcastle=s Tapeta.
With that performance confirming her stamina, Audarya was
placed prominently as Bolleville (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) cut out the
fractions with Romanciere acting as her lead. With the latter left
in front upon straightening for home, she had the ideal target
and quickly took her measure dragging Ambition with her
approaching the furlong marker. Nazeef was paddling at this
point and the first two had the race between them as they
stayed on strongly to draw away from the remainder.
Pedigree Notes Audarya=s dam Green Bananas (Fr) (Green Tune) was a modest
performer over middle distances for the Francois Doumen stable
and did race at this meeting, finishing runner-up in a 12 1/2-
furlong handicap in 2013. She is a daughter of the G3 Prix
Minerve and G3 Prix d=Aumale-placed Anabaa Republic (Fr)
(Anabaa). Things get more interesting under the fourth dam
Jimka (Fr) (Jim French), whose son Jim and Tonic (Fr) (Double
Bed {Fr}) proved one of the Doumens= finest flat performers
when taking the G1 Hong Kong Cup, G2 Dubai Duty Free and G2
Hong Kong International Bowl as well as a clutch of Group 3
contests in his native France. Jim and Tonic=s full-sister Jimkana
(Fr) was responsible for Mauralakana (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}), who
captured the GI Beverly D. S., GII New York S. and GII
Sheepshead Bay H. Cont. p5

EBAIYRA TAKES THE POMONE Underlining the strength of the G1 Prix de Diane, The Aga
Khan=s Ebaiyra (Distorted Humor) came back from a sixth
placing in that July 5 Chantilly Classic to beat her elders in
Sunday=s G2 Darley Prix de Pomone at Deauville. Unlike when
she was held up when winning the G3 Prix de Royaumont over a
mile and a half at Chantilly June 10, the homebred was taken
straight to the lead by Christophe Soumillon and enjoyed the
change of plan to dictate a steady tempo. Under Pressure in the
straight, the 5-2 second favourite kept finding to see off Spirit of
Appin (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) by 3/4 of a length, with the
19-10 favourite Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) a length
away in third.
AWe definitely wanted to ride her closer than she was in the
Diane, where she was left with too much to do, but we didn=t
necessarily want to be in front,@ trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre
said. AChristophe did it well and timed it perfectly. She stays well
and is an improving filly. We now have two nice fillies in her and
Valia (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and they are both possibles for the
[G1 Prix] Vermeille and Royallieu.@
Pedigree Notes Ebaiyra is the second foal and second group winner out of the
G2 Prix de Royallieu winner Ebiyza (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}),
with the first being the Jockey Club Oaks Invitational winner and
G2 Prix de Malleret and G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris runner-up
Edisa (Kitten=s Joy). Ebiyza is a granddaughter of the G1 Irish
Oaks and G1 Prix Royal-Oak heroine Ebadiyla (Ire) (Sadler=s
Wells), who is a half to the G1 Ascot Gold Cup-winning pair of
Estimate (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}) and Enzeli (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}) and
the G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Edabiya (Ire) (Rainbow Quest).
Ebiyza=s unraced 2-year-old filly by More Than Ready is named

The veteran chestnut halted a seven-race winless streak,
which stretched back to his career high, opening the campaign
with tallies in Riyadh=s valuable Feb. 29 Longines Turf H. and this
venue=s May 24 G3 Prix de Barbeville before running second in
the June 14 G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier at Chantilly last time.
Lobbing along in second behind the clear leader Collide (GB)
(Frankel {GB}) after breaking on the lead, the 9-10 favourite
swept by that fading rival approaching the final furlong and
stayed on strongly under mild coaxing to comfortably hold the
running-on German challenger Ashrun (Fr) (Authorized {Ire}) by
1 1/2 lengths. Gestut Rottgen=s 2017 G1 Deutsches Derby hero
Windstoss (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger) kept on well from the rear to
finish 2 1/2 lengths further back in third.
AMany of the horses have been ill and are only now starting to
recover so it has been a difficult year and it is nice to win this
one,@ commented winning trainer Freddy Head. AEverything
depends on the quality of horses you have in your yard, but that
is a trainer=s life, with ups and downs, and this has cheered us
up no end. Call The Wind always runs his race, he has never let
us down and won well as the good horse that he is. The season
is not finished yet so we might bounce back in the [Oct. 3 G1

Pedigree Notes Call The Wind, one of three Group 1 and five stakes winners

ETONIAN SCHOOLS SOLARIO RIVALS Julie Wood=s Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) caused a 28-1
shock when prevailing by 3 1/4 lengths at Sandown in his only
prior start and the form of that seven-furlong maiden contest
received a hefty boost when
runner-up One Ruler (Ire)
(Dubawi {Ire}) took the opening
heat on the Esher track=s Sunday
card. He was sent postward at
considerably shorter odds for the
day=s feature G3 Betway Solario
S., over the same seven-furlong
strip, and pounced late to ensure
his perfect record remained
intact. Etonian sought and found
cover in sixth after an alert
getaway from the outside gate.
Making eyecatching headway on
the bridle out wide in the
straight, the 15-8 favourite was shaken up to seize control from
the pacesetting Apollo One (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) with 100 yards
remaining and kept on strongly from there to comfortably hold
the late rally of King Vega (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) by 1 1/4
lengths. Apollo One finished a half-length adrift in third.
AHe=s a horse that initially stood out, in the way he moved, but
he got a bit bored in his work and was just doing his bit at
home,@ said Richard Hannon. AI=d given him a lot of entries and
we had to run him sooner or later so we came here for his
debut, but I don=t know how we allowed him to start at such
long odds. He won very well that day, he was very professional
in everything he did today and always looked like he was going
better than all of them. He wasn=t particularly fond of that
ground, but I=d have been disappointed if he didn=t win. It=s
lovely for [owner] Julie Wood to have a good one as it=s been a
fair while in between good horses for her.@
Looking to both long-term and short-term targets, the trainer
added, AI think he=s a [G1 2000] Guineas horse for next year and
maybe a [G1] Vertem Futurity horse this year. He=ll have
another one or two runs [this year] and we could look at the [G1
Prix Jean-Luc] Lagardere, a race his sire won, and the [G1]
Dewhurst, but it all depends on what Julie wants to do.@
Pedigree Notes Etonian is the latest of three
foals and lone winner produced
by an unraced daughter of G3
Prix de Flore runner-up Wingspan
(Silver Hawk), herself kin to
MGSW GII Hall of Fame S. victor
Interactif (Broken Vow) and
stakes-winning GIII WinStar
Distaff H. third Stretching (Red

Pennant Champion (Mr.
Prospector), herself a daughter of
unbeaten MGISW US champion
Personal Ensign (Private Account), is a full-sister to GI Jockey
Club Gold Cup-winning sire Miner=s Mark and GI Oaklawn H.-
winning sire Traditionally. She is also a half-sister to MGISW
distaffer My Flag (Easy Goer), who in turn produced MGISW US
champion Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat).

PASSION MAKES STANERRA BREAKTHROUGH On the premises when third in the G1 Irish Oaks at The
Curragh July 18, Passion (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) made her class tell
from the front under a perfectly-judged ride from Seamie
Heffernan in Sunday=s G3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Stanerra S. at

second favourite, who had also been third in the G2 Ribblesdale
S. at Royal Ascot June 16 and in the G3 Give Thanks S. at Cork
last time Aug. 8, had things her own way on the lead and stayed
on strongly in the straight to score by 1 3/4 lengths from Traisha
(Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), with 1 1/4 lengths back to the 6-5
market-leader Kastasa (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) in third.
AShe stays that trip and is probably maturing into her full
strength now,@ Heffernan said. AShe could run well in a Leger or

MAAMORA TURNS BACK ATALANTA RIVALS On a day when surprises were aplenty, Sandown saw a turn-up
in the G3 Betway Atalanta S. as Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum=s
Maamora (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) made all for a career-best success.
Last seen finishing third in the nine-furlong G2 Balanchine at
Meydan Feb. 13, the 14-1 shot was where the bias was with
Sunday=s action favouring front-runners and she never looked
likely to relinquish her advantage en route to a half-length
verdict over Billesdon Brook (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), with
3/4 of a length back to Lavender=s Blue (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire})
in third. >TDN Rising Star= Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was
again disappointing, fading out of contention late to be a neck
further behind in fourth.
AWe kept her in training to try to win a group race this year. It
was a beautiful ride by William as he jumped her out and got his
fractions right,@ Ed Crisford said. AThere was some seriously
good kit in behind, so she really toughed it out. She does love it
from the front. This is a good front-runner=s track and it suited
her well.@
Like the afternoon=s G1 Prix Jean Romanet winner Audarya (Fr)
(Wootton Bassett {GB}), Maamora proved a slow-burner and it
was not until her sixth start at Ripon that things clicked as she
got off the mark last June. Taking two handicaps over this trip,
with one at this venue, the bay was second in the Listed
Lanwades Stud S. at Bro Park in September before heading to
Meydan.
AShe ran well in Dubai and finished third in the Balanchine over
a mile-one and we thought this would be a perfect target for
her,@ Ed Crisford added. AShe had to do quarantine after
Meydan and the flight was delayed a little bit, so it just a took a
little bit of time to get her back with all the travel restrictions
but she has been training nicely at home. I think the [G1] Sun
Chariot [at Newmarket] will be her big end-of-season target.
Whether there is something before, a Group 2, I don=t know, but
that will be her race.@ Cont. p12

Richard Hannon is also looking at taking Billesdon Brook back
for that contest, which she won last year, after another typically
solid effort. AShe ran a very good
race, but they gifted the race to
the one in front.@ he
commented. AShe looked like
she was going to go past and she
looked like she was travelling
best, but they didn=t go much of
a gallop in front. All roads will
lead back to Newmarket and
there is not long to go now.@
Roger Charlton was not giving
up on last year=s G1 Fillies= Mile
winner Quadrilateral despite a third consecutive below-par run
in 2020. ARyan [Moore] was very happy with her. He said they
went slowly and sprinted and she got tired,@ he explained. AI said
>any other problems= and he said no. She is blowing very hard.
She is 20 kilos heavier than last year and she has only been back
in work four weeks. She should improve.@
Pedigree Notes Maamora is out of the Listed Radley S. winner Zoowraa (GB)
(Azamour {Ire}), who is also the second dam of the G2 Sweet
Embrace S. winner Hungry Heart (Aus) (Frankel {GB}). The
second dam is the Listed Oak Tree S. winner and G3 Supreme S.

Earlier this season he had annexed Bro Park=s G3 Stockholms

April and the G3 Sovereign S. at Salisbury last August, is one of
three black-type winners out of the Listed Cecil Frail S. scorer
Marika alongside Raw Impulse and Sabratah, with the latter also
finishing third in the G3 Prix de Seine-et-Oise before producing

black-type winners are headed by the G3 Fred Darling S. winner

Recent form always counts for plenty at such auctions and the
well-related Surf Dancer (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), who sells as
lot 706 from William Haggas's Somerville Lodge, has a York listed
win to his credit this season among his three wins from eight
starts.
Among five horses consigned by Ballydoyle is Battle Of Liege
(War Front) (lot 386), a 3-year-old brother to Evie Stockwell's
Group 1 winners Hit It A Bomb and Brave Anna who won a
novice race last season and is currently rated 82.
Breeders on the lookout for a filly with a decent page will
doubtless peruse the drafts from major breeders Juddmonte
and Shadwell. Among the draft of 21 fillies, colts and geldings
from Prince Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms is lot 445,
Sophistry (GB) (Make Believe {GB}), an unraced half-sister to G1
Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Epicuris (GB) (Rail Link {GB})
whose juvenile Frankel (GB) half-sister has been placed in
France since the catalogue was printed. Also of dual-purpose or
international interest is the 104-rated 5-year-old gelding
Crossed Baton (GB) (Dansili {GB}) (lot 423), who was a listed
winner at three and four over 10 furlongs.
There is also one wild-card entry, an 80-rated 2-year-old filly
who will be sold on Monday as lot 199A. Named Ocean Star
(Ire), the daughter of Adaay (Ire) is trained by Archie Watson
and won over seven furlongs at Chepstow on Aug. 14 after
finishing runner-up in two of her three previous starts.
Tattersalls' Park Paddocks sales ground will be extra busy this
year with the Ascot Yearling Sale having been relocated there on
its new date of Sept. 7, followed by the Tattersalls Ireland
September Yearling Sale, which is also being staged in
Newmarket this year, from Sept. 21 to 23.
ENABLE ON COURSE FOR KEMPTON Dual G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe heroine Enable (GB)
(Nathaniel {Ire}) is pleasing connections ahead of a start in the
G3 September S. over the Kempton synthetic on Sept. 5. The 6-
year-old Juddmonte silksbearer took the 2018 September S. in
advance of her second Arc crown. Second in that
ParisLongchamp showpiece in 2019, the John Gosden trainee
was also runner-up in the G1 Coral-Eclipse S. to Godolphin=s
Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) this July, but was back in top form
in the G1 King George Vi & Queen Elizabeth S. on July 25.
Enable=s Arc opposition is arguably the stiffest yet, as since the
Coral-Eclipse Ghaiyyath rolled by three lengths in the G1
Juddmonte International S. at York on Aug. 19 after taking the
G1 Coronation Cup S. in June, his third Group 1 on the bounce.
Standout Aidan O=Brien filly Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was also
boosting her reputation recently with a victory in the Aug. 20 G1
Darley Yorkshire Oaks and looms a formidable rival in the Arc.
Racing for the Coolmore partners, the sophomore miss claimed
that Knavesmire contest by five lengths. In the G1 QIPCO 1000
Guineas, the blaze-faced chestnut had drawn off by 4 1/4
lengths and her margin of victory in Epsom=s G1 Investec Oas
was nine lengths.
AWhat we saw from both was no great surprise, really,@ said
Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for Prince Khalid Abdullah.
ABoth of them had very strong form going into their races--they
were both favourites and both won well. Really they just proved
what very good horses they are, but I think we already knew
that--it wasn=t a surprise.
AEnable is in good form, anyway, and still on course for
Kempton. Come the Arc, what will be will be. It won=t be just
those two we=ll have to worry about. The Arc is so well revered
for a reasonBall the opposition merits respect. No Arc is ever
easy.@

Pyledriver=s trainer William Muir | Tattersalls
FIRST-SEASON SIRESWITH RUNNERS
ST LEGER GAINS PYLEDRIVER, HUKUM ALSO
POSSIBLE MGSW Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}), who won the G2
Great Voltigeur S. on Aug. 19, has been confirmed for the G1 St
Leger at Doncaster on Sept. 12, Racing Post reported on Sunday.
Trainer William Muir confirmed the news, with the G1 Grand
Prix de Paris at ParisLongchamp, also on Sept. 12, off the table.
The La Pyle Partnership, consisting of owner/breeders Roger
Devlin and brothers Guy and Hugh Leach, raced Pyledriver to a
listed success at two. The colt ran second in the G3 Unibet
Classic Trial S. over the Kempton all-weather on June 3, before
burnishing his G1 Investec Derby claims with a two-length
victory in the G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal Ascot later that
month. After a difficult run in the July 4 Derby, Pyledriver sped
to a 3 1/2-length score in the Great Voltigeur.
AThe plan at the moment is to look at the Leger as long as I=m
happy with himBand he looks to be in superb form,@ Muir told
Racing Post. AHe=s in the Grand Prix de Paris, but the Leger is for
3-year-olds only, it=s a Classic and at this stage, that=s where
we=re going. The owners said you only get one crack at a Classic
and the worst that can happen is that he doesn=t stay, he gets
beaten and we put him away for the year.@
Shadwell=s Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who won the G3
Geoffrey Freer S. at Newbury on Aug. 15, is another under
consideration for the final Classic of the British season. A winner
at second asking at Kempton last November, Hukum took the
King George V S. at Royal Ascot on June 17 before his Geoffrey
Freer success.
Trainer Owen Burrows said, ATouch wood, he=s come out of
the race very well, but nothing has been finalised as to where
he=ll go next. He certainly wasn=t stopping at either Ascot or
Newbury, so I can=t see the trip being an issue, but I have to
keep stressing he shows plenty of pace at home and is not
simply a stayer.
AI thought William Muir=s horse was very impressive in the
Great Voltigeur, especially with a penalty, but you=d have to say
Aidan [O=Brien] appears to hold all the cards with Santiago (Ire)
(Authorized {Ire}) and a few others. But, this year more than
any, if you think you might have a horse for it you=ll be tempted
to go. We=ll speak to Sheikh Hamdan, but the Leger does look
the logical next step.@
DONJAH TARGETS ARC German Group 1 winner Donjah (Ger) (Teofilo {Ire}), who won
the G1 Preis von Europa at Cologne on Aug. 15, is pointing
toward the G1 Qatar Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe as her season
finale on Oct. 4. The Darius Racing colourbearer will first step
forward in the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden on Sept. 13, but
trainer Henk Grewe is pleased with how the 4-year-old filly has
come out of her latest effort.
ADonjah is a horse apart,@ Grewe told the France Galop notes
team. AShe is fantastic. Our plan is to aim for the Qatar Prix de
l=Arc de Triomphe. She has nothing to lose and everything to
win. She has achieved everything that we have asked of her. We
would like to her to run in the Grosser Preis von Baden, before
heading to the big French race. 2020 is her final year of
competition.@
A winner of the G3 Grosser Preis Herzog von Ratibor Rennen
as a juvenile, the bay was second in the Grosser Preis von Baden
to Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), third in the G1 Preis von
Europa and successful in Italy=s G2 Gran Premio del Jockey Club
at San Siro last term. She was fourth in the G2 Gross Hansa Preis
in her 4-year-old bow at Hamburg on July 11.

{MSW-Fr, $133,622}, by Sea the Stars {Ire}), who was on a
three-timer having scored over a mile at Bath July 2 and over
this trip at Windsor July 20, took up front-running duties from
the break. Sticking to her task resolutely on the climb to the line,
the 2-1 favourite registered a 3/4-of-a-length verdict over Angel
Fairy (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) with something in hand. The winner
is the first foal out of the dam, who was a triple listed scorer in
France and who has the unraced 2-year-old filly A Legacy (GB)

Roaring Lion. A daughter of the triple German Group 1 winner

second to subsequent G3 Solario S. victor Etonian (Ire) (Olympic

into stride and led from the outset of a contest in which this
term=s G1 St James=s Palace S. and G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois
hero Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) earned >TDN Rising Star=
status on debut last year. Holding sway throughout, the 2-1
second choice was nudged along passing the two pole and kept
on strongly under whipless cajoling in the closing stages to
comfortably hold Maximal (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths.
AOne Ruler is a lot more streetwise and I think he=s made that

sure he=d get further. I don=t know what plans are at this stage,
but he looks like he=ll develop into a lovely horse for next year. It
looked a good maiden on paper and rode like a good maiden.

defeating Friday=s Listed Ruby S. victress So Wonderful (War

Aug. 3 maiden over seven furlongs at Naas and remained on an
upward curve with a career high on black-type bow here. Racing
at the tail of the field after departing the outside stall, she was
nudged along passing the quarter-mile marker and displayed a
powerful turn-of-foot once launching her challenge out wide at
the eighth pole to win with something in hand.
AShe has buckets of pace for seven furlongs, we could even
drop her back to six and it=s great that she won,@ said trainer
Johnny Feane after collecting a personal best of his own. AIt was
a bit of a shot in the dark, but we thought she was very good at

said we=d take a pop and it has all worked out great. That=s my

the centre. Ending up against the stand=s rail, the 22-1 shot
grabbed Monaasib (GB) (Bobby=s Kitten) on the line for a short-
head success.
AHe was one of our Ascot horses and was impressive at Navan.
The last day at The Curragh he ran out past the line, so I was
coming here fancying him today,@ jockey Seamie Heffernan said.
AToday was his first try at six furlongs and he got it real well.
There is a chance that he might get another furlong and, if he

Second favourite at 5-2, Normcore rallied determinedly to take
the G2 Sapporo Kinen at Sapporo on Sunday. Racing one off the
fence behind the leading bunch, the grey relaxed behind splits
of :23.80 for the first 400 metres and :48.10 for the half-mile.
Tipped out for her run entering the final bend she fanned four
deep and set her sights on the 4-5 favourite Lucky Lilac in upper
stretch. Eating into that foe=s advantage with every stride, she
took control inside the final furlong and had just enough cushion
to withstand the late charge of Persian Knight. The winning
margin was a length, with 1 2 lengths back to MG1SW Lucky
Lilac in third.
A winner of the G1 Victoria Mile in May of 2019 and the G3
Fuji S. that October, Normcore went winless in her next four
starts. Fourth in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile that
December, she was off the board in the G1 Takamatsunomiya
Kinen this March, third in the 2020 Victoria Mile in May and
fourth last out in the G1 Yasuda Kinen in Tokyo on June 7.
Pedigree Notes One of eight winners from nine to race from her dam, the
Victoria Mile winner is followed by the G1 Shuka Sho and G1
Takarazuka Kinen victress Chrono Genesis (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}), the
3-year-old filly Clotho Nona (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}), an unnamed
juvenile colt by Maurice (Jpn), a Drefong yearling and a filly by
Maurice (Jpn) this term.
