National Health CareDecisions Day

April 16 is National HealthCare Decision Day! Have youtaken the time to think about ifsomething ever happens andyou can’t make your needsknown who you would want torepresent you? This is one ofthose subjects that people don’twant to talk about or put off to alater date, because they arehealthy and they figure it issomething they can do later. Thetruth is that none of us knowwhen we may have a medicalemergency and will be in needof someone to advocate for us.The main things that you wantto remember is that you wantsomeone who will act on yourbehalf and make the decisionsthat you would have made foryourself. Also, if you alreadyhave someone in place to beyour patient advocate, have youtalked to them about yourwishes? Don’t assume that theyknow you well enough to knowwhat you would want; youHAVE to talk about it. It doesn’ttake long to complete a patientadvocate—just thedetermination to actually get theprocess started. There are severalways you can get the forms tocomplete an advancedirective/power of attorney. They are an attorney, any officesupply store, the Internet, orthere are copies in the SocialWork office that I would behappy to give you.

Let’s Bust Out Stress!April is National Stress

Awareness Month. Stress is anemotional feeling or physicaltension. It can come from anevent or thought that makes youfeel frustrated, angry or nervous.Stress is a normal emotion. Insmall amounts it can actuallyhelp you accomplish tasks, but itis important to know that iteffects everyone differently. Some symptoms of stressinclude muscle tightness orpain, headaches, difficultyfocusing, increased sleepiness ordifficulty falling asleep. It canalso cause you to lose yourtemper more frequently. Stresscan come from the need toadapt or change to something.

Another common cause of stresscan be injury or illness to you, afriend or a loved one.

What relieves stress is not thesame for everyone. Try first toeat a well-balanced, healthy dietand get enough exercise andsleep. Relaxing activities such asyoga and meditation may alsowork. Make an effort to takebreaks from things that might becausing you stress, by simplyspending time with people youenjoy such as family or friends.Keep a diary of stressors that youhave identified and talk tosomeone regarding what youhave found, such as a loved oneor your doctor.

SpiritualCorner

God of Surprises“I have seen Him! He is alive!”

Mary of Magdala’s messageseemed to fall on deaf, or atleast unbelieving ears that firstEaster morning. Peter had to gosee for himself that the tombwas empty, and John wentalong. The long linen shroudwas there and somethingunusual, too. The smallernapkin cloth which had coveredJesus’ head was folded in aseparate space. Etiquette of thattime was that if the diner wasfinished, he would leave hisnapkin loose at his place. If hewas to return, he would fold it.For the rest of the day the twodisciples probably wonderedabout that fact, in addition toJesus’ dead body not being inthe tomb which had beenclosely guarded by Romansoldiers. Any knock at the doorwould have been answered veryhesitantly for fear of beingquestioned or arrested due totheir fellowship with Jesus. Butnone of this stopped the Son ofGod from appearing in theirmidst that evening. In spite oftheir abandonment of Him threedays before, Jesus greets themwith “Peace! It is I. Do notbe afraid.”

(Continued)He even asks if they have

something to eat to show themHe is not a ghost, but is trulyphysically there among them.

And so began a time whereour God of surprises not onlyabundantly and surprisinglygave and gives to His people, but often, in return, requestsabundant surprises as responsesto His freely given love andmercy. This Easter, let us maketime to admit and be grateful forthe many surprises our God hasgiven us and our families.Alleluia!

Wishing you peace and allgood things this Easter,

Sister Judith Salzman, FSSJ,Director of Pastoral Care Services
