In what ways does my film opening use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real film openings?

The publishers

Warner Brothers and Dimension films are known for publishing some very dark and mature films such as Batman, Sin City, Halloween, Scream and V for Vendetta. This gives the audience member a chance to guess what sort of film the motion picture will be before it even starts.

This gives the audience a chance to guess what the film will be like.

Title shotThis shot shows off a number of codes and conventions of Neo-Noir

Firstly we can see that the entire shot is monochromeThere is violence as seen by the weaponsThe font used for the title is very dark and loomingThe only colours been shown are dark and drearyAll of which are codes and conventions of Neo-Noir

The mask This shot helps push the narrative forward and introduces “Mask”

This shot helps introduce the protagonist of the movie by showing his “face”It also helps set the scene with its dark atmosphereThe light shining in from one side also symbolizes his different motives (anger and redemption)

The person? This helps introduce the actual character behind the mask

This shot introduces the protagonist to the audienceI used a high-angle shot so as not to show his faceThe lighting appears to once again, highlight a part of him yet keep another part in the dark much like the last shot I explained.

Intimidation The shot shows the dominance of “Mask”

This shot is done to make “mask” seem as the bad guy which aids the story and draws in the audience as they want to see why the camera is following the bad guy. The lighting is done so as to highlight one side of “Mask” and the other side of the man so as to make them appear different morally.

Lighting This shot shows off a code and convention of Neo-Noir, hardlight

This shot is important more based on how it validates the movie as a Neo-Noir, it does this through the hard lighting illuminating half of “masked” however due to wearing a hood it also shields his face. It also highlights how “Mask’s” hoodie is green whilst the rest of the shot is monochrome.

Who is masked? This shot is made to make the audience think “who is masked?”

This shot is much like the previous shot I mentioned, however it is also very different as it shows off his mask again and the entire scene is in a softer light . Through this shot you can see all features of “mask” such as his green hoodie, his mask, stance, weapon etc and whilst other shots covered these, this shot actually has mask in full view making the audience wonder who he is.

Who is this kid? This shot is the one which makes Masked seem evil?

When I asked a number of my class mates if they thought “Masked” was a good or bad guy, they (almost) all agreed that he was bad, I am fairly certain that the brutal murder of Matthew’s character is why! However, they do not know why he died and so might watch on to find out, in which case they will find him to be the bad guy!
