MINISTRY OF CONSOLATION To offer spiritual support and the healing comfort of God to all who mourn a loss through death. In the scriptures Jesus comforts those who mourn, as in Matthew 11:28-29: “Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, I will give you rest...and you will find rest.” In the same Gospel, Jesus reassures us of God’s sol-ace: “Happy are those who mourn; God will comfort them!” (5:4). We as Christians follow this example. If you are suffering the loss of a loved one, please attend the meeting. The first meeting will be on May 9, 2013 at 7 PM in the Pastoral Center Event Room. The Second Va can Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospec ve By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back

Ques on: If wri en by men, why are the books of the Bi-ble considered divinely inspired?

Answer from Dei Verbum: Those divinely revealed reali es which are contained and presented in Sacred Scripture have been commi ed to wri ng under the inspira on of the Holy Spirit. For holy mother Church, relying on the be-lief of the Apostles (see John 20:31; 2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Peter 1:19-20, 3:15-16), holds that the books of both the Old and New Testaments in their en rety, with all their parts, are sacred and canonical because wri en under the inspira on of the Holy Spirit, they have God as their author and have been handed on as such to the Church herself. In composing the sacred books, God chose men and while employed by Him they made use of their powers and abili-

es, so that with Him ac ng in them and through them, they, as true authors, consigned to wri ng everything and only those things which He wanted. Ques on: S ll, if wri en by men, is there not the possibil-ity that the Bible might contain error?

Answer from Dei Verbum: Therefore, since everything asserted by the inspired authors or sacred writers must be held to be asserted by the Holy Spirit, it follows that the books of Scripture must be acknowledged as teaching solid-ly, faithfully and without error that truth which God want-ed put into sacred wri ngs for the sake of salva on. There-fore "all Scripture is divinely inspired and has its use for teaching the truth and refu ng error, for reforma on of manners and discipline in right living, so that the man who belongs to God may be efficient and equipped for good work of every kind" (2 Tim. 3:16-17, Greek text). Editor’s Note: We’ve already gone through two of the six chapters of Va can II’s Dei Verbum document (“Revela on Itself” and “Handing on Divine Revela on”). The text from the above answers is from its third chapter, “Sacred Scrip-ture, Its Inspira on and Divine Interpreta on.”

We o en find ourselves drawn to dig deeper into our Cath-olic faith. You are encouraged to explore more at: www.va can.va/archive/ At the Va can’s website, you’ll find a wealth of free and complete Catholic resources in-cluding the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Code of Canon law and the en rety of the Second Va can Council.

FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Congratulations to our boys and girls who are receiving their First Com-munion this weekend, on Saturday morning. One of the greatest honors I have as a priest is to be able to give Jesus in Holy Communion. How spe-cial it is, and how privileged am I to give it to someone for the first time.

These children, who once crossed their arms to receive a blessing from the priest or communion minister during com-munion time, now extend their small hands to receive Jesus as family members watch with great excitement and are drawn together in a sacred memory.

They have prepared well for this special day. They had their First Confession facing the priest and their second time was their first experience inside the confessional. They have practiced for this day so well.

Reminded me of a story about a 2 ½-year old girl, Kelli, who went with a neighbor to Church for First Communion practice. The pastor has the children cup their hands, and when he gives them the Host in this case, a piece of bread – he says, “God be with you.” Apparently this made quite an im-pression on little Kelli. She came home and told her mother to cup her hands and bend down. Kelli took a piece of bread from her sandwich, placed it in her mother’s hands, and whispered, in her most angelic voice, “God will get you.” This Saturday too, Fr. Jerry Orbos celebrates a special Healing Mass. Fr. Jerry belongs to the Society of the Divine Word or SVD and is the mission director of the congregation in the Philippines. He writes a regular Sunday column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, a nationwide newspaper. He also leads pilgrimages, retreats, recollections and a television min-istry for the Eucharistic Healing Mass. Welcome Fr. Jerry! God will get you, but God will also heal you. I have frequented the hospital and care facilities lately, visiting some of our parishioners. Some have received a com-plete healing, some just partially and some are still in the hos-pital. They certainly need our prayers. Prayer, no doubt, is the greatest medicine and of course, Jesus, is the greatest healer. People have been asking me, “how is your sister?” A few months ago, she was in the ICU struggling for dear life threatened by the worst scenario of a possible kidney trans-plant and heart surgery. The doctors did their best writing med-ical prescriptions which were quite costly and without the ben-efit of any medical insurance. But besides the medical pre-scription was the spiritual prescription being offered free of charge by so many people including our own parishioners at Holy Name. She was soon released from the hospital to contin-ue her recovery at home. Her heart doctor insisted that she should still undergo an angiogram and angioplasty soon. Some medications have been discontinued, but the prayers were not. Last week, she went to see her doctor for her lab tests. Miracu-lously, all the tests were negative. That’s the only time that negative is good, or a negative result that creates a positive effect. No more medical procedures. She passed the test. We all passed the test, because we did not stop praying. Don’t lose hope! God answers our prayers!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Frequent fliers today have many ways to accrue air miles, so one doesn’t always have to endure long hours in cramped seats to earn free hours in cramped seats. In St. Paul’s day, there were no such perks, nor would there have been any legal system for him to pro-test the shipwrecks he endured. He had other rewards in mind. The churches that he established in the catalogue of cities from today’s first reading must have been very different from one another. Language, culture, customs, religious history, obstacles to community, social challeng-es, the places where they met, their clothing, their bread and wine, all distinct, particular to the area. There were social customs as well: in a Christian household, the only place where a slave would be able to stand legally as an equal with the master would be at the table of the Lord, because at that table a new world of reconciliation was imaged. While Paul revered local cus-toms, he was relentless about challenging the ways that people lived their Christian lives and how their worship reflected them. It is much the same today, as a global Catholic Church seeks to respect local customs and cul-ture, allowing for differences in many things, yet always giving expression to the underlying presence of Christ, who binds us all together into his body. —James Field, Copyright © J.
