January PMO...Praises to God!

Our second monthly PMO (Parish Monthly Outreach), held on Wednesday, January 27th was an exceptional ministry of LOVE! At 10am 27 parishioners gathered expectantly in the Library anticipating the arrival of the Catholic residents from Elmcroft Assisted Living. Eight residents, some in walkers and wheel chairs, were escorted from the van into the Library where they were embraced with LOVE through Hugs of welcome, prayer, snacks and going home gifts. Father Octavio blessed us as we accompanied him on guitar with several entertaining songs in English, Spanish and Italian! The Holy Spirit led us through the Holy Door so, the residents could attend the 11:30am Mass. Thanks be to God for a Holy, Joyful and Blessed opportunity to extend the Love of Our Savior, Jesus Christ, to our neighbors “across the street”. “And the Greatest of these is LOVE” 1 Corinthians 13:13 Blessings, Loretta Mayko

CALLED TO BE HOLY THROUGH MERCY

My dear parish family:

A new year is here; a new opportunity to show our heavenly Father that through his Spirit we received in Baptism we can show the tenderness of Jesus’ mercy to the world.

Responding to Pope Francis’ call taken from the Bible: “Be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful” (Lk 6:36), we have already started the first of 12 PMO’s (Parish Monthly Outreach) last December. I ask you to please keep track every month in the bulletin of the upcoming PMO. You really make a difference when you show up. Not only do you build us all up at SJN but also you touch the heart of someone in need.

Also, during Lent I am asking all parishioners to read and reflect on a wonderful booklet entitled “The Holy Year of Mercy (YOM)”, published by the Word Among Us. It is an excellent resource recommended by Archbishop Gustavo. You can do this individually or in a small group to get the most out of it. If you belong to the small faith community program “Longing for the Holy (LFH)”, that can be your YOM group also. If you don’t, that is ok.

We can form small faith communities only for the purpose of reflecting on the 8 sessions proposed by the YOM booklet without any further commitment. Ideally I would ask the YOM communities to meet 4 times in the Spring (more specifically during Lent, if possible), and 4 times in the Fall (Sept-Nov). This is going to be the standard pace for the YOM program. If any group wishes to do all the 8 sessions without any breaks that would be fine too. Just be attentive to the times in the year when we’ll be called to gather all together in praise and worship.

Due to the celebration of this Jubilee of Mercy the pace for the LFH communities has changed somewhat. We no longer have to conclude in March this season started last September and entitled “Christian Morality”, as was originally planned, but we can finish anytime later in the Spring. Each group is free to decide on their own how they wish to incorporate the YOM program with the LFH, but not every LFH group is expected to do the YOM program; only if they wish. Our next LFH season on Prayer will begin in the Spring of 2017.

We will be giving further notices, clarifications and announcements in the near future. For now let us rejoice that our Catholic faith is so rich and fulfilling. It meets all our needs while challenging us to continue walking that extra mile for our brothers and sisters in need. I personally thank you for following your baptismal call of love and service because by doing so we can all experience more easily the tender mercy of God’s holy servant, our Lord Jesus Christ.

May God bless you and your loved ones! Fr. Octavio

1 Haven for Hope Way, San Antonio, Texas 78207

February’s Parish Monthly Outreach - “Project of Mercy” will be on February 20, from 9am to 12pm at Haven for Hope.

For those that haven’t heard or know what this organization does, its mission is to offer a place of hope and new beginnings. They do this by providing, coordinating and delivering an efficient system of care for people experiencing homelessness in Bexar County. It is made up of two major programs: the Courtyard and the Transformational Campus. The Courtyard is a low-barrier safe sleeping program that offers shelter and basic needs. The Transformational Campus is a center that offers services and shelter with an emphasis toward addressing the root causes of homelessness.

Please join us in being a witness to mercy by working together and accomplishing our special acts of mercy projects. The projects consist of “Campus Beautification” which basically means picking up trash

and litter around the Transformational Campus. The other project will be cleaning the sleeping mattresses used throughout the Courtyard. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

If you would like to volunteer, please call/text me @ (210) 845-6695 or email me at [email protected]. You can also call the Parish Office at 654-1643 to volunteer.

We will meet in the front parking lot of SJN between 8 – 8:15am; and then all caravan and/or carpool to Haven for Hope.

Let’s all encourage one another, our family and friends, each of our brothers and sisters sitting next to us at Mass to heed the call and participate in this Year of Mercy.

We hope to see many of you on Saturday, February 20!

Thank you and God bless us all on our “journey of conversion.”

Your Brother in Christ, Salvador Ordorica Life, Justice & Peace

“True mercy, the mercy God gives to us and teaches us, demands justice, it demands that the poor find the way to be poor no longer.”— Pope Francis’ Address to Jesuit Refugee Services, 9/10/13.

Mass with Anointing of the Sick

If you have an upcoming surgery with total anesthesia or have serious health issues such as cancer, a heart or a lung condition, or you are older than 80 years old who have not received the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick within the last year. You are invited to a Mass with the Anointing of the Sick on Thursday,

February 11, 2016 at 11:30AM in the Church. We will have ushers to help accommodate those who come to be anointed, especially the physically disabled. Everyone can find spiritual healing and some will find bodily healing as well. This is exactly what the sacrament of the Anointing does; it brings about the forgiveness of sins, peace surrender and in some cases, the bodily ailment disappears. I hope this Mass will help connect us and all the sick of the world more deeply, making us feel truly part of the Communion of Saints.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GIFTS OF TIME, TALENT & TREASURE

A Heartfelt Thanks from the Knights of Columbus Council 9291

Monsignor Robert Silverman Knights of Columbus Council 9291 sincerely thank all its prize donors and all who purchased tickets for its 2015 Christmas raffle. The three nativity set winners were: 1st prize Holy Land set-Eileen Moxley; 2nd Prize Costco set-Kerry Ledford, 3rd Porcelain set-Walter Alvarez. The five consolation prizes of ($50.00 gift cards) the winners were: John Gallaher; Carmen Mendoza, Lou Hand, Norma Palumbo and Maria Lozano. Congratulations, and again, thanks to all! Also, we would like send out a heartfelt thank you to all who participated in the 2015 Little Angel Christmas Tree Project. The generosity of our St. John Neumann parishioners again expressed itself in this project. We collected (gifts, money, toys, clothing) for approximately 200 needy children.

NESA is in dire need of more volunteer drivers to take clients to doctor appointments and to the grocery store. As our community ages, the demand for our services increases and we are already overworking those volunteers on our

current roster. With United Way funding, we have started a television campaign with our sister agencies, and together we are called: Drive A Senior SA. If you know someone who has extra time on their hands who might be able to drive a person once a week or once a month, please tell them about NESA and send them our way. It’s just like taking a family member. If you are concerned about gas, don’t worry. Mileage is reimbursed. It is truly a fulfilling experience to be able to give back to the community and pay it forward…take a chance and try it out! Call us at 967-6372.

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas (CDA), Court Daughters of Our Lady of Fatima #2596 at St John Neumann would like to thank Father Octavio Muguerza, our Chaplain Deacon Tom Tucker and the Church personnel for all the work they put into

the success of the retreat on Saturday, January 30, 2016. The CDA would also like to recognize all the

spouses, St Vincent de Paul Society and the Rosary Makers that helped behind the scene. Also, a special thank you to all the Catholic Daughters for their participation and support either in clerical area, setting up and decorating, cooking and baking areas and all the ladies from the parish that have participated in the 2016 Retreat Day of Recollection: “A Women Encounter with God’s Mercy” that was offered here at St John Neumann.
