FAZtor ‘s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora

Congratulations to the 19 Holy Name School students who received the Sacrament of Confir-mation last Friday, with our very own resident bishop, Most Rev. Ignatius Wang, J.C.D., D.D., as main celebrant.

Additional congratulations to the new set of officers of our School Parent’s Guild who were installed in a special ceremony last Thursday evening at the Flanagan Center. This Sunday is the special screening of the movie “Mary of Naza-reth” at the St. Ignatius Preparatory Wiegand Theater. It is a fundrais-ing event for our parish, which will benefit our Youth Group and Young Adult Ministry. Hope to see you there. What a wonderful way to start this month of May, a month to honor our Blessed Mother Mary. In fact our school students also hon-ored our Blessed Mother last Thursday, the first day of the month, with the “May Crowning”, honoring Mother Mary by placing a crown of flowers on her head. As we honor her, let us also ask for her interces-sion that God will always give us the grace, mercy and blessings that we need in our journey each day. “Grace is when God gives us good things we don’t deserve; mer-cy is when He spares us from bad things we deserve; blessings are when the Lord generously gives us His grace and mercy.” Did you know that apostles actually edited the Bible story about the woman caught in adultery because what really happened was quite awkward? It seems Jesus was writing in the sand and said, “If any one of you is without sin, you be the first to throw a stone.” Suddenly, from out of nowhere, a rock came sailing in and whacked the poor woman in the head. Jesus stood up and with a great exasperation said, “Mother!” St. Anne’s Church, our neighboring parish, will have a new pastor this July since Fr. Ray Reyes, the current pastor, has just been ap-pointed as Vicar for Clergy and soon be working at the Chancery Of-fice of the Archdiocese. Let us pray for Fr. Ray as he takes on this very important and challenging responsibility. Let us pray for a smooth transition of new assignments this July. At this time let us seek the intercession of two beautiful mothers: our Mother Mary and her moth-er good Saint Anne.

The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back

Question: What might be some of the effects resulting from the rapid modernization of society?

Answer from Gaudium et Spes: This development coming so rapid-ly and often in a disorderly fashion, combined with keener awareness itself of the inequalities in the world beget or intensify contradictions and imbalances. Within the individual person there develops rather frequently an imbalance between an intellect which is modern in practical mat-ters and a theoretical system of thought which can neither master the sum total of its ideas, nor arrange them adequately into a synthesis. Likewise an imbalance arises between a concern for practi-cality and efficiency, and the demands of moral conscience; also very often between the conditions of collective existence and the requisites of personal thought, and even of contemplation. At length there devel-ops an imbalance between specialized human activity and a compre-hensive view of reality. As for the family, discord results from population, economic and social pressures, or from difficulties which arise between suc-ceeding generations, or from new social relationships between men and women. Differences crop up too between races and between various kinds of social orders; between wealthy nations and those which are less influential or are needy; finally, between international institutions born of the popular desire for peace, and the ambition to propagate one's own ideology, as well as collective greeds existing in nations or other groups. What results is mutual distrust, enmities, conflicts and hard-ships. Of such is man at once the cause and the victim.

Editor’s Note: Gaudium et Spes (the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World) presents an overview of the Catholic Church's teachings regarding humanity's relationship to society, with special emphasis on economics, poverty, social justice, culture, sci-ence, technology and ecumenism.

Life” will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. We suggest setting a MAXIMUM number of characters per leaf to 5 lines, 25 characters per line including spaces. Leaf color choices are Gold, Silver or Bronze. Please send engraving request with check payment (payable to Holy Name Parish) or drop by the church office, 1555 39th Ave. San Fran-cisco, CA 94122. For more information, please call (415) 664-8590.

From the Desk of the Parish Nurse: PILGRIMAGE TO LOURDES We want to share this blessed experience with all of you who are so loving and caring and dear to us. Some may consider this trip for your sick loved one (malade). The Order of Malta is sponsoring my husband, Dr. George, and I will accompany him as his caregiver. When we return, I will de-scribe the healing of this holy place. Pray for us: we pray for all of you. Carol, R.N.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES CYO APPEAL The second collection being taken on May 10-11 benefits Catholic Charities CYO. Catholic Charities CYO relies on your gifts to deliver our services to more than 35,000 people each year in San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties. With your help, we prevent homelessness; care for the ag-ing and sick; offer counseling in difficult times; and welcome newcom-ers with respect. You’re probably also familiar with our CYO Athletics and Camp programs and you may have even seen a CYO bus trans-porting children safely to school or on field trips. Why is this so important? Because our waiting rooms are still full. As our government grapples with budget cuts, the people most affected are often the poor and vulnerable. Your gift to Catholic Charities CYO will help alleviate poverty and strengthen families in our Archdiocese. Together, as a community, we do make a difference.

Third Sunday of Easter, Luke 24: 13-35

‘What are you discussing?’ Walking north on the Jaffa Road, heading toward the coastal

plain of Sharon, Cleopas said to his friend, “We should easily be able to reach the village of Emmaus before dark.” It was only seven miles.

Cleopas continued: “We can share a nice evening meal, spend the night and continue early the next morning.” His traveling companion said nothing and sighed at the prospect of all this travel.

It had been hectic getting away from Jerusalem. As always, the first day after Sabbath was doubly busy. They had stayed longer than planned, talking to Peter and the others about the shocking events concerning Jesus these last few days.

But now, at last, they were on their way. Now there was time to really talk about the crucifixion and how early this morning the women had seen a vision of angels at Jesus’ empty tomb. As Cleopas chat-tered on, they began to walk at a fast pace, matching the excitement in his words.

Another of the people heading north along the Jaffa Road, a lone man, fell into this fast pace with Cleopas and his friend.

“What are you discussing as you go your way?” he asked them Cleopas was amazed that this man hadn’t heard about the crucifixion of Jesus and told the story again. After hearing this the stranger chal-lenged their beliefs, reminding them that all of these things had been foretold by the prophets. “Did not the Messiah have to undergo all of this to enter into his glory?” he asked them.

When they reached Emmaus the stranger was going to contin-ue farther, but Cleopas was intrigued by his wisdom and invited him to stay with them and share a meal.

They sat together and Cleopas opened his bag and produced a loaf of bread. He handed it to the stranger who then took the loaf, broke it and then blessed the bread.

Suddenly, Cleopas and his friend recognized that it was Jesus with them. Jesus slowly and ceremoniously handed them the bread. As their eyes of understanding were opened, they all began to smile at each other. Silently a sense of peace and love enclosed them in the moment.

Moved deeply, Cleopas bowed his head and closed his eyes. When he looked up Jesus was gone. Frozen in amazement, Cleopas could not move from where he sat. Slowly he turned his head toward his friend who was staring, wide-eyed, at where Jesus had been. With-out hesitation they both rose and began to run back toward Jerusalem where they would find Peter and tell him about the miracle they had just experienced.

In each of our life’s journeys be assured, we will encounter Jesus along the way. He comes to us in different ways and we may not always be able to recognize him. He may come as a stranger on the road or a newcomer in our midst. He may come as an act of love from someone we know. We may see him in a time of great trial or he may simply be there smiling to us through the face of a flower, or in the sound of a song or by the glow of a sunset. May we be ever-vigilant for his presence. He is risen, He is among us here and now!

April 29, 2014 PRINCIPAL'S LETTER Dear Holy Name Families, Welcome back from Spring Break. I want to begin by thank-ing Mrs. Melissa Eusebio for directing an absolutely perfect interpreta-tion of the Stations of the Cross. Mrs. Eusebio worked with 7th and 8th grade students for weeks so that they would be prepared to re-enact The Stations of the Cross on Holy Thursday for our student body. They performed again on Good Friday for the Holy Name pa-rishioners. Not only did Mrs. Eusebio practice with our students, but she also repaired some of the well-worn costumes in her free time. Thank you to Father Arnold, our pianist, and Gabryl Adarne (6B), our singer, who provided beautiful, soothing music to accompa-ny the performance. Thank you to Sister Esther Ling who worked alongside Mrs. Eusebio and, as usual, helped out in many different ways.

Of course a huge thank you to: Jack McKie - Jesus Emma Mitchell - Mary William Lin - Pontius Pilate Malcolm Liu - Simon Christine Dela Cruz - Veronica Sophia Hapin, Elizabeth David Brown, Nathan Tong - Thieves Kirwan - Ladies Luke Bellber, Nelson Beltran, Nathan Chow, Brandon Lau, Ty Rapoport, Kieran Snow - Soldiers Justin Michaels, Elise Ng - Narrators Your performance was truly outstanding.
