GOSPEL TEXT REFLECTION

The Ascension is an interesting feast. We celebrate Jesus leaving! Jesus' first departure from the earth was sudden and unexpected, at least to his followers. That Good Friday departure was character-ized by sorrow, confusion, and loss. This departure has a different feel: anticipation.

Today's Gospel is full of the mighty deeds Jesus predicts for his followers. "In my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents [with their hands], and if they drink any deadly thing it will not harm

them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." Mark's account of the Ascension is abrupt and succinct: "Then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven." Jesus ascends and the Apostles go: "... they went forth and preached everywhere." The real moment likely had a bit of lag time. Realistically, the Apostles had quite the task in front of them. Can you imagine those first few moments on the hilltop after Jesus disappeared, as the Apostles met each other's eyes? Perhaps they said something like, "This is it. He really is gone this time. It's up to us now."

Mark's abrupt transition from Ascension to action makes his meaning clear. The Ascension isn't just about Jesus. It's about us. Are we ready to go? Are we ready to be commissioned? This is the heart of the Ascension message - Jesus leaves so we can go. We might not "go into the whole world," but we all live in a corner of it. The command to "proclaim the Gospel" isn't a call for everyone to be formal preachers of the Word. We do, however, proclaim our beliefs with the way we live our lives, filled with the joy of Easter and our risen Lord.

PRAYER FOR MOTHERS

Heavenly Father,

from the beginning you have chosen to entrust

the human person to mothers in a special way.

We thank and praise you for the gift of mothers;

for their tenderness, care, and compassion,

for their intuition and encouragement, for their

commitment and sacrifice. Bless all mothers today.

Keep, strengthen, and refresh them

in your loving care.

May they be blessed by our open-hearted love

and gratitude. Amen.

This season of Easter is a great time to remember our mothers and ask for God's blessing on them. It is God who ultimately gave us life. It is through God's unselfish love - mirrored in our mothers' willingness to associate their love with God's and take the risk to love us into life - that we have the opportunity for life. We remember our mothers this Mother's Day with much love. Let us pray for each of them.

BLESSING OF MOTHERS

God our heavenly Father, You give to each the ability

to share your generative love. Bless those women in our lives

who mirror your love and bring forth life through their

willingness to risk

bringing new life into this world. Help us to show them our gratitude

for the gift of life and

the gift of a mother's love. May our life-giving God

continue to bless them and show them his unfailing love. We ask this through Jesus,

God's Son

and our brother. Amen.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

A REQUEST AND A SUGGESTION FROM YOUR PARISH

There are a good number of parishioners who are comfortable dropping a check into the collection basket without a cover envelope and that’s perfectly OK! Your parish is grateful to you for your devotion. Might we ask that you put your “envelope number” onto the face of the check? This would speed up processing and assure accuracy in recording donations for your year end tax letter information. Please call the office if you do not have that number. Your effort at this is most appreciated.

If you will be gone from the parish for an extended time, you can call the Parish Office to inactivate your envelopes, and schedule a date for them to resume. This sometimes requires a month’s notice to be effective on the intended stop date, but may be just what’s needed for months-long absences.

VERDE VALLEY CATHOLICS

Join our new Facebook group called Verde Valley Catholics. The goals are: to provide an easy way to let all Catholics in the area know about events going on in all four Parishes; to build community in and among Parishes; to provide a forum for discussing Catholic theology in a way that is respectful, faithful and above all charitable; to share goods and support each others’ businesses, and to pray for and help one another.

The group can be found at www.facebook.com/ groups/VerdeValleyCatholics or email [email protected].

THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

Today as we celebrate the feast of the Ascension we are reminded that Christ’s saving work on earth continues through his disciplesNand now through us.

When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts, into our lives and into the hearts of those who are poor.

SUMMER CHANGES AT YOUR PARISH

This Sunday, the Ascension of our Lord and Mother’s Day, is the last Sunday for donuts and coffee. This hospitality will resume after Labor Day, at which time we hope that there will be additional volunteers willing to serve. Please consider it over the summer.

This is the last eight page bulletin until mid-September. If you make use of the second page (contact names, email addresses, and phone numbers), you may want to save it for reference during the summer; it will not be repeated again until after Labor Day. Happy and safe travels this summer! 5

Seventh Sunday of Easter

For the last three Sundays, we have been hearing Jesus' farewell discourse before he ascends into heaven. This Sunday, Jesus concludes with a conversation with the Father where he petitions on behalf of his followers. In his words, Jesus' love for his disciples, then as well as now, shines forth. There is a sense that now we are all truly one with him. We are consecrated in truth, as he is consecrated as the truth.

As our Easter draws to a close, it is good to reflect on how we represent Jesus Christ to the world. We are truly the body of Christ, the presence of Christ in a world that oftentimes does not know him. Can the world recognize him in us? Since we are protected and consecrated in truth, do we venture out boldly into a hostile world bringing real peace? Do we testify to the reality of the risen Lord each day, or do we treat that reality like another story, which we recall fondly? The season of Easter will be concluding next week at Pentecost, but we are to be Easter people all year through. May the risen Lord be with us as we seek to share the good news in our daily lives with all those we meet.

In the Diocese of Phoenix, the feast of the Ascension of our Lord is moved this year to today, the 7

th Sunday of Easter.
