EXODUS 20: 2-3

For most of us, it’s almost unimaginable to think of having other gods besides the Lord. I mean, how many people do you know who pray to Aphrodite (the goddess of love), to find a suitable fiancé for their grandchild? Have you ever heard of one of your neighbors doing a rain dance to Juno, the Roman god of rain because their front lawn was getting brown? None of us would overtly worship any god except for our heavenly Father — the God of the Bible. But are we really certain we aren’t breaking this commandment on a regular basis?

How many times have I fallen behind on my prayers and fell asleep watching a rerun of NCIS? How many times have many of us overindulged in foods or drink even though we know our doctor has warned us to cut back? In Paul’s letter to the Philippians, he warns of those people “Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.”

Lent is a time to take stock of what is TRULY important in our lives. Are we putting our own pleasures ahead of God’s will in our lives? A few years back, Father Sam and I took a class on leadership and they encouraged participants to salvage a half hour of wasted time each day — just 30 minutes. They explained that if we made use of the 5 minutes staring at the coffeemaker waiting for the coffee to brew, or 15 minutes spent surfing the web waiting for a phone call, or 15 minutes watching a mindless game show before the news comes on, that we could easily salvage 30 minutes each day.

What if we salved 20 or 30 minutes each day by setting down the cell phone or backing away from the computer, or chattering about nothing with a friend, and put that half hour to good use? Would that time be better spent saying a prayer for a friend who is ill? Would it help us to be more patient with our families if we sat in prayer quietly for a few extra minutes each day? Our Lord may be Jesus Christ, but how often is the Internet our master, and our cell phone our shame?

From Father Joe

Our Lady of Lourdes Living Rosary Novena for Health & Healing, Mon., 6:30pm, Good Samaritan All women are invited to bring your Rosary & needs to the attention of Our Blessed Mother who always hears our prayers and leads us to the Sacred Heart of her Son, Jesus.
