 The KROHNE strategy

KROHNE is present in almost every plant

and process in the world. As a global

player, we react quickly to our customers’

demands, whatever they ask, whenever

they ask.

We are active members of all important

industrial associations to make sure we

anticipate industrial trends and then set

the benchmarks that others follow.

Development history

When the first Coriolis flowmeters

appeared on the market in the early

1980s, they were widely welcomed in

industries where their direct measurement

of mass flow was seen as an immediate

benefit. The ability to measure mass flow-

rate directly from a single instrument was

seen as a significant technological and

economic advantage.

In 1994 KROHNE introduced the first

single straight tube Coriolis mass flow-

meter. Compared with those earlier

designs, the main advantage of this meter

was its low pressure drop. The straight,

single tube design has since proved to be

a cost effective solution for mass flow

measurements across a wide range of

industries. The Optimass 7000 now

represents the third generation of this

design philosophy. This sensor requires

no specific installation engineering,

yet offers outstanding flow and density

measurement accuracy and stability.

The product family is completed by other

sensors, each designed to offer measure-

ment solutions in different application

fields, yet all maintaining the common

benefits of class leading performance

coupled with ease of use.

KROHNE

Mass FlowmeterCenter of excellence for mass flowmeter

The team at KROHNE’s centre of excellence for mass

flowmeter technology in Wellingborough, UK, has been

researching ways to develop a straight tube meter that

overcomes previous limitations with this technology,

opening up a wide range of new flow metering

opportunities.

No limits with OPTIMASS

This new family of mass flowmeters, OPTIMASS, provide

accuracy, repeatability and ease of installation.

The flowmeter has been designed to meet the needs of

industry, with secondary containment to 100 bar as well

as approval for hazardous area applications, and it is the

first of its kind to provide wetted parts in titanium,

stainless steel and Hastelloy®, thereby allowing material

selection to give corrosion resistance for almost any

process fluid.

Coriolis flowmeters are already widely used across many

market segments, including chemical and petrochemical,

where a mass measurement is important for applications

such as chemical reaction balancing, bulk loading from

storage to tankers, quality control and custody transfer.

 Your Benefit

With their ability to provide mass flowrate and total mass,

temperature, concentration, density and other parameters

directly from the one instrument, our meters offer all the

advantages of conventional Coriolis meters, but now with

significant additional benefits of their own.

KROHNE - easy to work with.

Product Overview

Measuring principle

3

Coriolis forces Fc are generated in oscillating systems when a liquid or a

gas moves away from or towards an axis of oscillation. A Coriolis measuring

system is of symmetrical design and consists of one or two measuring

tubes, either straight or curved. A driver sets the measuring tube (AB) into auniform fundamental oscillation mode.

When the flow velocity v = 0 m/s / 0 ft/s, the Coriolis force Fc is also 0.

At flowing conditions, i. e. flow velocity v > 0 m/s / 0 ft/s, the fluid particles

in the product are accelerated between points AC and decelerated between

points CB. The Coriolis force Fc is generated by the inertia of the fluid par-

ticles accelerated between points AC and of those decelerated between

points CB.

This force causes an extremely slight distortion of

the measuring tube that is superimposed on the

fundamental component and is directly proportional

to the mass flowrate.

Density measurement is made by evaluation of the

frequency of oscillation, temperature measurement

using a Pt 500 sensor.

 The new OPTIMASS mass flowmeters

implement all sensor drive and signal

evaluation functions into an integrated

front-end electronics module

permanently fixed to the sensor.

Modbus communication direct

from meter – no need for separate

converter

 This new cost effective solution

eliminates unwanted and expensive

I/O and display functions associated

with traditional signal converters and

transmitters, and is designed for use

in OEM systems or packages where a

PLC or DCS is already used for other

functions.

Connection using standard,

off-the-shelf, four-core cable

A simple 4-wire (1 pair data and

1 pair power) interface is all that is

required to connect the OPTIMASS

meter to the PLC or DCS, utilising its

embedded Modbus RTU over RS485connection. This allows programming,

commissioning and measurement over

a single data connection.

Full functionality through using

Modbus communication

end connections as standard including an all new

(patented) hygienic connector designed acc. to

DIN 11864/2. High pressure tongue and groove

flange options also available.

KroMASScal

Sizing softwareIn order to assist the user in balancing the conflicting

demands for accuracy, low pressure drop and fluid

velocity. KROHNE has available a powerful, yet easy

to use, OPTIMASS meter sizing program called

KroMASScal. Starting with the basics of the fluid and

process details, the user can select different tube

materials and meter sizes to make “what if” com-

parisons to ensure the best meter is chosen.

The program has a build-in database of many

common liquids and gases, and will recognise the

vast majority of unit descriptors for mass, volume,

density, temperature and viscosity.

“Toolbox”

diagnostic toolCoriolis mass flowmeters are used in many

demanding applications where process or fluid

disruptions are often present. In the past, diagnosing

these external factors was a difficult and time-

consuming process.

Now KROHNE has available “Toolbox” a PC based

system that is able to capture, record, analyse and

display the low level sensor information using an

RS485 data port that is integral in every MFC 050/1

signal converter, when connected to a PC or laptop.

The “Toolbox”system can further be used for meter

validation purposes by comparing the current sensor operating profile with a historic record, to enable

problems such as tube corrosion to be identified.

Calibration

of OPTIMASS Coriolis mass flowmeters in UK

KROHNE calibration services has the

UKAS seal of approval

KROHNE’s reputation for industry-leading

quality and reliability has been formally

endorsed by the United Kingdom

Accreditation Service (UKAS).

The company’s calibration facility at its

Wellingborough-based plant has been

awarded UKAS certification to ISO 17025.

UKAS is the sole accreditation body in

the UK recognised by government to

assess, against internationally recognised

standards, organisations that provide

certification, testing inspection and

calibration services.

KROHNE has seven calibration rigs which

are now the only dedicated rigs in the UK

accredited by UKAS to calibrate Coriolis

mass flowmeters. They have been approvedfor testing mass and volume flow to 0.035

per cent and 0.038 per cent uncertainty

respectively at flow rates from 1,125 kg per

hour to 247,100 kg per hour.

 The accreditation enables the company

to carry out custody transfer calibration

and seal instruments according to the

requirements of OIML R117 without the

need for customers to undertake

additional on-site calibration. This can

save substantial time and money.

“Attaining UKAS approval is of great

benefit to us,” said Eddie Bridges,

international product group manager

for mass flow at KROHNE.

“We can now formally demonstrate that

we meet strict internationally recognised calibration criteria, which we will apply

to all products we supply.”

Calibration

•  True calibration against certified weight scales

• Fully automated routines guarantee repeatability of result

• Calibration at three temperatures ensures density and temperature

measurement accuracy

• Accuracy of calibration rig at least 3 times better than accuracy of meters

being measured (and therefore not susceptible to variations in temperature,

pressure, flow rate, etc.)

High accuracy with OPTIMASS

High accuracy calibration rig for mass flowmeters. Compares the flow measured by

the meter with a highly accurate scale. Temperature controlled and compensated

for any ambient drift, the brand new rigs are capable of measuring up to 4 mass

meters in series against actual weighed mass.

Seven state-of-the-art calibration rigs

have been installed at KROHNE’s UK

headquarters in Wellingborough to meet

the growing customer demand for the

revolutionary OPTIMASS range.
