Basilica Schola

The Basilica Schola is in session for the 2015-2016 season. We already have welcomed new members,

but hope you will join us too! We schedule informal "auditions" during the year for anyone interested in joining. It is a great way

to enhance your spiritual life, meet fellow parishioners, and deepen your understanding of the tradition. Contact Joshua, our

Cantor: [email protected] to learn more. Hear our latest record-

ing, available on iTunes, and find out more about the music ministry at

http://oldcathedral.org/music-at-the-basilica.

MUSIC AT THE BASILICA Lent IV—Laetare The fourth Sunday in Lent is known as Laetare Sunday. This name comes from the Latin Introit: “Laetare, Jerusa-lem…” You can see the music of this beautiful chant in your music programs. The Cantor intones the antiphon, and the Schola responds with a versicle from a psalm. On Laetare Sunday, the organ gets to play a prelude and postlude, indicat-ing the joy of the approach of Holy Week. The Schola will also sing the Kyrie and Agnus Dei from Hassler’s famous Missa Secunda. Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) was born in Nuremberg into a musical family. He was the first of many German composers to go to Italy; he ar-rived in Venice at the height of the Venetian school, receiving instruction from Andrea Gabrieli. Hassler, returning to Germany, was a well-known organist, composer, and consultant on organ design, even engaging in his own mechanical instrument construction. The Erben could use his help right now! We installed a temperature and humidity logger to keep track of conditions inside the organ so that existing cracks in the wood don’t continue to grow. The hymn at Offertory was composed by Synesius of Cyrene (c. 375-430) and set to a hymn tune dating from the 16th century, if not earlier. Synesius studied with the famous Hypatia of Alexandria, and had a distinguished Greek lineage. He later became a very active Bishop, and faced great obstacles. There are 155 epistles and ten hymns written at differ-ent periods of his life, the latter valuable because of the light which they throw on his religious and philosophical views, the former, the most precious of his writings, because of the light they throw on the writer'spersonality, and the picture which they give of the age in which he lived. The text of this hymn was his last.

During this Jubilee Year we are called to help one another and be merciful as Jesus is for all our sins. It is only with your help that the Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal continues to be a beacon of hope for our brothers and sisters through ministries and charities.

Every year the Archdiocese sets a goal for each parish. This year the goal for the merged parish of St. Patrick's Old Cathe-dral and the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood is $47,000. Please pray over this and make a gift that will assist those in need around us. You can learn more about the Appeal at www.cardinalsappeal.org

The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from eating meat .

The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral is honored, with the blessing of Cardinal Dolan, to have HOLY DOORS at its sister church, the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood for the duration of the Holy Year. With these Holy Doors open 24hrs a day, pilgrims passing through them will benefit from indulgenc-es and blessings. Pilgrims will reflect on the major theme of the Holy Year – the universal reach of God’s mercy – by viewing a display of presepio, crafted in this city of Naples by La Scarabattola. For those in a state of grace and fulfilling the other prescribed conditions, a plenary indulgence may be gained once day by passing through the Holy Doors. A plenary indulgence removes all punishment due to sin.

Those seeking the indulgence are encouraged to begin a pilgrim-age starting at the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral where a Prayer of Mercy may be said. The pilgrim then may proceed down to the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood where the Holy Doors of Mercy are located.

BULLETIN NEWS – MARCH 12-13, 2016

NOVENA TO SAINT ANTHONY: – PLEASE NOTE: Although our dai-ly 12:10pm Mass has been discontinued, Monsignor Sakano has agreed to have a Mass for the 13 weeks of the novena. Monsignor is aware that our faithful pa-rishioners and visitors who are dedicated to Saint An-thony appreciate hearing a bit of history about Saint Anthony’s life from a priest during Mass; this

makes the devotion much more meaningful for them. Thank you, Monsignor, for making it possible for everyone to spiritually enhance the novena experience with a Mass.

The novena begins TUESDAY, MARCH 15 and will continue until JUNE 7. We are doubly blessed because Monsignor Russo will be returning to Most Precious Blood Church to celebrate this Mass for us over the course of the next 13 Tuesdays. Please try to get the word out that the novena to Saint Anthony will follow the

12:10 pm Mass.

MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD SENIOR CLUB: The next MPB senior club luncheon also takes place on March 15. The luncheon will follow immediately after Mass at approximately 1:00 pm and will take place in the dining room of our rectory at 109 Mulberry

Street. Please mark your calendars for both these events.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS: Every Friday at 12:10 pm we have the Stations of the Cross devotion. The Stations will contin-ue up to and including Good Friday, March 25. The 3:00pm Com-

munion service that follows the three-hour agony/visitation of churches will take place at St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME: The time has come for us to

change our clocks once again; this time we are setting them for-ward. This Saturday, March 13 at 2:00 AM, we will need to

change the time to 3:00 AM – we are setting our clocks one hour ahead. Of course, you can do it an hour or so before or after 2:00

AM, but remembering to do it is the important thing.
