Dear Parishioners, Today’s celebration of the Ascension of the Lord can get lost. It comes between two other significant moments in the life a young Church. A few weeks ago, we celebrated the greatest day on the liturgical calendar, the Resurrection of the Lord. In a few days, we will celebrate another important event for a fledgling Church, the Descent of the Holy Spirit.

Today, the Apostles are less afraid than they were when Jesus came to them on that first Easter but losing him today for a second time could not have been easy. In our first reading, they are left staring up at heaven. In the Gospel, they leave rejoicing filled with great joy. So which is it? Are they bewildered or joy-filled.? Actually, they are both. The Apostles have journeyed with Jesus for three years. They have witnessed the miracles and the parables. They have also witnessed the resentments and the ridicule. They have just witnessed his tor-turous death and his glorious Resurrection. It has truly been a roller-coaster ride of giant proportions. Such is the life of discipleship we live even today as we gather to cele-brate the moment between Easter and Pentecost. We are a people living in a kingdom established here on earth, but not yet part of its fullness found in the next life. It is an in-between moment for the Church, and in our own lives. How we choose to face such moments tells us how resilient our faith is, or whether there is work to be done to strengthen our reliance on Jesus and on his promises. It is always going to be easier to have faith when things are going well. It is in those in-between moments that we learn a great deal about ourselves. It is okay to stop and stare at what is unclear or con-fusing – as long as we find joy in the journey, as the disciples in both readings eventually did [even though we don’t hear about it in the first reading]. It is here we discover the need to go deeper in our trust in Jesus’ promise not to ever leave us orphaned. It is in these in-between moments we also realize we are nev-er alone in facing any challenge that is before us. For though Jesus’ human form ascended into heaven, He is here present in word and sacrament. The Holy Spirit dwells within and among us. By God’s grace, may we have all that Saint Paul prayed for, for those who lived in Ephesus: May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a Spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him. May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones, and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe.

Padre Tadeo.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The mystery of the Ascension has to do with holding in tension a sense of God’s nearness, along with the burden caused by apparent signs of absence. The risen Jesus says to Mary Magdalene, “Do not cling to me,” perhaps pointing out to her that his physical presence to the disciples was time bound and temporary. It was a gift for their transformation, and after forty days, he van-ished from their sight and hearing, though never out of their consciousness. They do not mourn at his going this time: there is no trace of the disciples who hid in fear at his crucifixion, no sense of the women who wept softly as they carried oint-ments to the tomb through the dewy morning light. In-stead, the scriptural accounts show them full of joy, com-forted by his promise to be with them forever, and open to the Spirit’s power. They are joyful, energized, aware, and united with one another in love. They seem to grasp an awareness that if the mission to the whole world was a serious one, then the presence of the Risen Christ could not be pinned down to any one place or time, but had to be always and everywhere completely available. All peo-ples, all times, all cultures were opened to receive him in this moment of the Ascension. The energy of this feast is drawn not from absence, but renewed and deeper pres-ence. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Ascension of the Lord Coming or Going?

One way of looking at the Ascension is that Jesus can

do much more for us in his glory than he could while on earth. How does this work? It happens in two steps. First, he sends the Holy Spirit to the disciples. Second, the disciples become his witnesses to all the nations. So let’s look at the first step.

The Gospel of John that is read on the Vigil of Pente-cost says that “there was . . . no Spirit yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified” (John 7:39). Obvi-ously the Spirit is co-eternal with the Father and the Son, so John is trying to get our attention. He means that we could not experience the gifts of the Spirit until Jesus had died and risen from the dead. While Jesus walked the earth, he chose to be limited in time and space, so that a few people could get to know and love him. But after his resurrection, he could be more effective by sending his Spirit to all believers. Because he is ascended into glory, he can live in all of us. Just as the power of the Holy Spirit caused Mary to be the mother of Jesus, so that same power enables Jesus to live in us. And that leads to the sec-ond step.

Before his death, Jesus began to collect a group of followers. Some got to know him more deeply and became disciples. The rest of the followers were merely curious or attracted by stories of miracles he had performed. They did not have the faith and cour-age to bring others to Jesus; some only stayed with him a short time. But after his ascension the disciples began to experience Jesus in each other. They could not help but be excited about that and spread that excitement to others. From the time of Jesus’ ascen-sion to our own time, people have boldly proclaimed the gospel. So Jesus’ ascension actually makes him present to more people, not fewer. May we all experi-ence that presence in the Spirit, seeing Jesus in our-selves and others.
