Dear Parishioners, A true story: Once upon a time a young mother with three young children in tow found a pew toward the back of the church. She regularly did this so that she could make a graceful exit if one of her children needed the bathroom or started to squirm a little too much. A few minutes later, an older parishioner came up to the young mother and announced that she was sitting in her seat. She quietly moved over, knowing her escape route had now been compromised.

Almost as if on cue, when the first reading began, one of the children started crying. The older parishioner who forced her way into “her pew” started glaring at this young mother. Thankfully another older parishioner, sitting right behind her, leaned forward and quietly offered to watch the two other children while she took care of the one who needed her atten-tion at the moment. Thus, the Martha and Mary debate seems to continue even today: doing what is most important in the right moment. Do we listen to Jesus or tend to his needs? In the story above, one older parishioner wants to sit at the feet of Jesus and hear what he has to say without being disrupted. The other parishioner seems more concerned with meeting the needs of a distraught mother. In this instance, we might say that the parishioner who came to the aid of the mother did so because she was already hearing exactly what Jesus had to say, and she acted on it. As a Church, we continue to struggle with how to make anyone and everyone welcome in our midst regardless of their circumstances. The Eucharist we gather to celebrate is an incredible gift given to us by a God who loves us beyond words. Both Martha and Mary’s tal-ents are needed within us so that we can bring others to Christ – so we can bring others to the Lord’s Table. If we grow complacent in our responsibility in not only hearing the word of God, but in acting upon it, the Church will suffer. Let none of us be responsible for turning away anyone who comes to our doors seeking Christ. Let us hear with urgency God’s word spoken here today and let us act upon it. We can be both Martha and Mary at the same time.

Queridos feligreses, Una historia verdadera: éra-se una vez una joven madre con sus tres hijos pequeños que encontró una banca en la parte de atrás de la iglesia. Regularmente ella hacía eso para poder salir sin molestar si uno de sus hijos necesita-ba el baño o empezaba a

inquietarse demasiado. Unos minutos más tarde, una parroquiana que tenía años en la parroquia se acercó a la joven madre y le dijo que estaba sen-tada en su asiento. Ella se movió silenciosamente, sabiendo que su ruta de salida había sido blo-queada. Casi como si fuera la señal esperada, cuando ini-cia la primera lectura, uno de los niños comenzó a llorar. La mujer que exigió sentarse en "su banca" comenzó a echar miradas a esta joven madre. Afortunadamente, otra parroquiana, también con años en la parroquia, estaba sentada justo detrás de ella, se inclinó hacia delante y se ofreció en silencio a cuidar a los otros dos niños mientras ella atendía al que necesitaba su atención en ese momento. Por lo tanto, el debate de Marta y María parece continuar incluso hoy: hacer lo que es más impor-tante en el momento adecuado. ¿Escuchamos a Jesús o atendemos sus necesidades? En la histo-ria anterior, un feligrés quiere sentarse a los pies de Jesús y escuchar lo que Él dice sin ser inte-rrumpido. El otro feligrés parece más preocupado por satisfacer las necesidades de una madre en problemas. En este caso, podríamos decir que la persona que acudió en ayuda de la madre lo hizo porque ya estaba escuchando exactamente lo que Jesús tenía que decir y actuó al respecto. Como Iglesia, continuamos batallando con có-mo hacer que todos y cada uno sean bienveni-dos entre nosotros, independientemente de sus circunstancias. La Eucaristía que nos reunimos para celebrar es un regalo increíble que nos ha dado un Dios que nos ama más allá de las palabras. Tanto el talento de Martha como el de María son necesarios dentro de noso-tros para que podamos llevar a Cristo a otros, y así podamos traer a otros a la Mesa del Señor. Si nos volvemos complacientes con nuestra responsabilidad no solo al escuchar la palabra de Dios, sino el actuar sobre ella, la Iglesia su-frirá. Que ninguno de nosotros sea responsa-ble de rechazar a alguien que venga a nuestras puertas en busca de Cristo. Escuchemos con ur-gencia la palabra de Dios hablada hoy aquí y ac-tuemos de acuerdo con ella. Podemos ser Martha y María al mismo tiempo.

The Finding God program, from Loyola Press, is de-signed to spiral from one year to the next with the Sacra-ments of Reconciliation and Eucharist celebrated in the second year. A MINDSET OF SERVICE

There’s a lot of traveling, delivering, and visiting going on in our readings to-day. In Genesis Abraham cares for the needs of three mysterious travelers. The psalm responds, celebrating the kind of righteousness that Abraham practices. Then, in his

letter to the Colossians, Saint Paul describes his own ministry as almost like a delivery service: he, God’s steward, brings the word of God to their community. Finally, Luke’s Gospel shares the well-known story of Mary and Martha, and the different ways they welcome Jesus into their home. Amid all this coming and going, we are invited to pay attention to the ways we tend to the needs of others. Each of us can ask, How am I

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

There’s a different pace to a summer Sunday, espe-cially on those days when we dream of air conditioning and wave any available paper to stir the air. Yet we per-sist in gathering, even with so many breaks from the usual routines. We distance ourselves not only from rou-tines, but from schedules and familiar well-worn paths. These are playful days and contemplative days. We see long-lost friends and visit almost-forgotten places. We have more leisure than any people before in the history of the world, and we need it because our lives are so care-worn and tiring. More of us walk barefoot and look up at the stars or dip our toes in the lake or sea, sing around campfires, read novels on the beach, and eat comfort food with our fingers. We see how beautiful life can be, and are more aware than usual of how God is always breaking in with signs of love. In Genesis today, Abraham and Sarah practice hos-pitality to their visitors, who turn out to be God dropping in. During the summer months, God practices hospitality in return, inviting us into a season of celebration. Keep-ing Sunday holy is a good habit to cultivate in these days when our spirits are especially receptive to God’s deep desire for us to know divine love. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe

América es un continente nacido del mestizaje que tomó a los europeos, los indígenas y los africanos para engendrar algo nuevo. Normalmente pensamos en el mestizaje de sangre que produjo nuevas razas latinoamericanas. Pero también existe el mestizaje cultural que produce nuevos elementos latinoamericanos. Uno de estos es el sarape, hijo de la tilma pre-colombina y el manto español. Este mestizaje en tela tiene sus principios en el siglo XVIII con una proliferación de talleres en Zacatecas, Saltillo y otros lugares. Esta cobija colorida, de algodón o lana, fue desa-rrollada para añadir color y belleza a los charros de siglos pasados. A través de la historia el sarape ha sido usado por vaque-ros, jinetes, soldados y revolucionarios. Hoy día el sarape, jorongo, frazada, gabán o cobija se ha convertido en sím-bolo de tradición mexicana y se encuentra decorando ho-gares, restaurantes e iglesias. México no es el único país que ha desarrollado un mestizaje en tela, también Guate-mala, Colombia, El Salvador y otros más tienen sus telas y tapetes particulares que mezclan los colores y los diseños para celebrar el talento y la creatividad del mestizaje lati-noamericano. — Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copy-right © J. Hospitalidade é a palavra chave da liturgia deste Domingo, claramente espelhada no quadro de Jesus ser acolhido pelas irmãs Marta e Maria! Pensemos por uns instantes na nossa missa portuguesa e pensemos em todas os leigos que sem dar nas vistas fazem uma preparação digna e vivida com o sacrifício Eucarístico a que viemos participar. Começando pelas sacristãs essas preparam tudo o que é necessário para o altar tal como: os livros necessários para as leituras, as hóstias, o vinha para serem trazidos no Ofertório e depois serem transformados no Corpo e Sangue de Cristo, purificadores, a água para o altar ou o vaso de água benta para alguma benção especial etc. São as nossas sacristãs juntamente com as senhoras que lavam os purificadores e os Ushers que preparam e mantêem a ordem para que todos os membros congregados á volta do altar se concentram unicamente no sacrifício de Jesus Cristo. São os leigos destes três ministérios as “Martas “ dos nossos dias. O sacerdote, os leigos dos outros ministérios: leitores, Ministros Extraordinários da Eucaristia, membros do coro todos eles beneficiam destes serviços de preparação. Jesus diz que Maria tinha feito a melhor opção em estar com Jesus e escutar-Lo mas não menosprezou e não deixou de apreciar o cuidado e a preparação hospitaleira de Marta. A hospitalidade de Jesus é diferente daquela a que estamos acostumados a providenciar: aos familiares e amigos. A hospitalidade de Jesus abrange os necessitados, os sem abrigo, os que não são como nós. No tempo de Jesus e na sociedade e lugar geográfico que Jesus vivia a hospitalidade estava nos primeiros lugares de deveres humanitários e de boas maneiras societais. Nos nossos dias o medo de sermos atacados, roubados, ou mortos leva-nos a fechar as portas ás sete trancas e de criar espaços para a televisão e internetee consequentemente o isolamento com os mecanismos electrónicos dos nossos dias tornam-se barreiras que impedem uma abertura acolhedora das paessoas. Não é que estas coisas sejam más, quando usadas moderadamente. No tempo de Jesus os hóspedes eram mecanismos de interação e de oportunidade de partilha de sabedoria e de vivências. Cabe-me nesta minha reflexão partilhar com os leitores deste boletim o respeito, apreço e gratidão que tenho pelas nossas sacristãs, lavandeiras de purificadores e ushers. São eles na minha opinião os preparadores do altar e ambiente acolhedor que com muita naturalidade usufruimos sem se darem conta da generosidade e entrega de bem servir a comunidade em nome de Jesus Cristo.

Notícias Novo Sacerdote: Com a partida do padre Prosper a nossa comunidade tem tido padre que fale português graças aos esforços do CPP. Neste momento sabemos que o novo padre chegou á nossa paróquia mas ainda não foi introduzido á nossa comunidade formalmente. Até a situação sobre o mesmo se normalizar iremos notificando a nossa comunidade; até lá continuem a levar o boletim para casa e procurem estar informados dos acontecimentos que vão aparecendo na secção do boletim em inglês.
