In our Catholic Tradition, remembering and praying for our dear departed souls is a mandatory custom to all families and members. There are several doctrinal issues that would remind us of this responsibility and provide us the rationale for it. Firstly, we all believe that there are two judgements: the individual one soon after the death which determines whether the person is in paradise enjoying the company of Blessed Mother and all the saints, in purgatory in the process of purification or lost forever, and the final judgment when the fate is eternally sealed before the judgement throne of Jesus the King of the Universe when He appears in His Glory. Until then all souls Rest in Peace waiting for the sound of the trumpets waking them up to behold Him and Receive the Reward for their faithful journey in life. Secondly we recognize three aspects of the church: the militant church, struggling in this world, the suffering church, in the process of purification in purgatory, and the glorious church, rejoicing in His presence. We can earn merits for ourselves only when we are alive in this world. We are not perfect and all of us need the process of purification before we can behold His Glory. Those in the process of purification in purgatory cannot earn any merits whereas they can receive help from their dear ones in this world. At the same time they can offer their sufferings for others’ benefit. That is why some people pray for help from the souls in purgatory, like we pray for the intercession of the saints. The Church encourages all believers to offer prayers and sacrifices for their dear departed souls. They cannot receive any material things but only spiritual gifts like prayers and sacrifices. The best gift they can receive is the Lord in the Holy Eucharist. Church encourages all believers to offer Holy Masses for the deceased members of their families and communities. This is not just for the month of November alone but we can do it all through the year. Every Mass we participate in, we can remember all our dear departed souls and offer the Lord’s redeeming gift of Himself for their consolation. In November we specially remember all our dear departed ones, present their names on the altar and offer all the Masses for their benefit. Al Catholic Families pray for the departed souls during their evening prayer together, usually five Our Father and five Hail Mary concluding with a spontaneous prayer for the consolation of the souls. This helps us to maintain our communion with them and to be vigilant about our own salvation on a daily basis. God bless you all.

En nuestra tradición católica, recordar y orar por nuestras queridas almas difuntas es una costumbre obligatoria para todas las familias y miembros. Hay varios problemas doctrinales que nos recordarían esta responsabilidad y nos proporcionarían los fundamentos para ello. En primer lugar, todos creemos que hay dos juicios: el individual, poco después de la muerte, que determina si la persona está en el paraíso disfrutando de la compañía de la Santísima Madre y todos los santos, en el purgatorio en el proceso de purificación o perdido para siempre, y el juicio final cuando el destino está eternamente sellado ante el trono del juicio de Jesús el Rey del Universo cuando aparece en Su Gloria. Hasta entonces, todas las almas descansan en paz esperando el sonido de las trompetas que los despiertan para contemplarlo y recibir la recompensa por su fiel viaje en la vida. En segundo lugar, reconocemos tres aspectos de la iglesia: la iglesia militante, luchando en este mundo, la iglesia sufriente, en el proceso de purificación en el purgatorio, y la iglesia gloriosa, regocijándose en su presencia. Podemos ganar méritos para nosotros solo cuando estamos vivos en este mundo. No somos perfectos y todos necesitamos el proceso de purificación antes de poder contemplar Su Gloria. Aquellos en el proceso de purificación en el purgatorio no pueden ganar ningún mérito, mientras que pueden recibir ayuda de sus seres queridos en este mundo. Al mismo tiempo, pueden ofrecer sus sufrimientos en beneficio de los demás. Es por eso que algunas personas rezan por la ayuda de las almas del purgatorio, como rezamos por la intercesión de los santos. La Iglesia alienta a todos los creyentes a ofrecer oraciones y sacrificios por sus queridas almas difuntas. No pueden recibir ninguna cosa material sino solo dones espirituales como oraciones y sacrificios. El mejor regalo que pueden recibir es el Señor en la Sagrada Eucaristía. La Iglesia alienta a todos los creyentes a ofrecer misas santas para los miembros fallecidos de sus familias y comunidades. Esto no es solo solo para el mes de noviembre, sino que podemos hacerlo durante todo el año. En cada misa en la que participamos, podemos recordar a todas nuestras queridas almas difuntas y ofrecer el don redentor de sí mismo para su consuelo. En noviembre recordamos especialmente a todos nuestros queridos difuntos, presentamos sus nombres en el altar y ofrecemos a todas las Misas para su beneficio. Todas las familias católicas rezan por las almas difuntas durante la oración de la tarde juntas, generalmente cinco Nuestro Padre y cinco Ave María concluyen con una oración espontánea para el consuelo de las almas. Esto nos ayuda a mantener nuestra comunión con ellos y a estar atentos a nuestra propia salvación diariamente. Dios los bendiga a todos.

A GREAT AND GLORIOUS GOD

Our readings today ponder two powerful truths: God is infinitely greater than we are; and God provides every kind of help so we can discover and share in God’s glory. The reading from Wisdom reminds us that we are tiny compared to “the Lord of the whole universe.” Nevertheless, God preserves and nurtures us out of perfect love. If we feel tiny, weak, and sinful compared to God, we are blessed! God’s greatness sustains and strengthens us. Saint Paul encourages the Thessalonian Christians with the same message. He reminds them that God alone makes the Church holy. He prays that everything they undertake will be for the glory of God. Luke’s Gospel shows us what this looks like in real life: Zacchaeus, feeling small and excluded, looks for Jesus. Jesus finds him and gives him the strength he needs to repent of his sins and glorify God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

UN DIOS GRANDE Y GLORIOSO

Nuestras lecturas de hoy reflexionan en dos verdades poderosas: Dios es infinitamente más grande de lo que somos y Dios provee toda clase de ayuda para que podamos descubrir y compartir su gloria. La lectura del libro de la Sabiduría nos recuerda que somos pequeños comparados con “el Señor de todo el universo”. Sin embargo, Dios nos protege y cuida por su amor perfecto. Si somos pequeños, débiles y pecadores comparados con Dios, ¡Estamos bendecidos! La grandeza de Dios nos sostiene y fortaleza. San Pablo anima a los cristianos tesalonicenses con el mismo mensaje. Él les recuerda que solo Dios hace a la Iglesia santa. Él ora para que todo lo que emprendan sea para la gloria de Dios. El Evangelio de Lucas nos muestra cómo es en la vida real. An old illustration pictures Martin de Porres, finger to his lips—“Shhhh!”—as several mice peek out of sacristy vestment drawers, preparing to join a rodent “procession” following him out of church! Martin’s rescue of these unwelcome guests, and statues depicting him, broom in hand, feeding a dog, cat, bird, and mouse from the same dish symbolize his life and sanctity. Initially denied entrance by the Dominicans because of his mixed race (Spanish father, Panamanian mother), Martin cherished society’s marginalized. For him, menial tasks, lovingly done, were sacred. Great and lowly alike feasted on his charity. Enemies were reconciled by this “poor mulatto” (his self-description), kind even to those whose racism demeaned him.

Martín nació en Perú, de madre africana y padre español. Debido al racismo de su tiempo, su padre los abandonó y aun así, siendo muy pobre, cuidó de los más pobres que él. A los 12 años aprendió el oficio de barbero y enfermería, oficio que desempeñó con una caridad sin par. Pidió ser admitido con los frailes menores de la orden de los Dominicos pero no lo aceptaron debido al color de su piel. Nueve años después se le permitió hacer sus votos perpetuos en la comunidad. Martín no guardaba odio para nadie, sólo amor. Puesto que además de pasar horas y horas frente al Santísimo Sacramento cuidaba de los enfermos dentro del monasterio, fuera de él y en todo Perú, la gente le llamó: “Martín de la caridad”. En su canonización el Papa Juan XXIII dijo de que se “ejercitaba inmensamente en la caridad para con sus hermanos, caridad que era fruto de su fe íntegra y de su humildad. Amaba a su prójimo porque los consideraba verdaderos hijos de Dios y hermanos suyos”. Fue canonizado en 1962.

“Today I must stay at your house” This problem of “good things for bad people” can cause as much distress as the problem of bad things

happening to good people. Both touch on one of the deepest mysteries of human existence: Is the universe fair? Is God just? This is what is making the crowd grumble about Jesus favoring Zacchaeus. Why is Jesus befriending

such a sinner?

This is the third such complaint about Jesus in Luke’s Gospel (see Luke 5: 27–33 and 5:25–15). However, the encounter with Zacchaeus is different. In the other accounts, Jesus responds to his critics himself, but here, it

is Zacchaeus who speaks up. Not only does Zacchaeus announce compensation for those he has cheated, he vows to give away half of his goods to the poor. At this point in the Gospel, Jesus is traveling to Jerusalem, where he

knows he will be put to death. No one else that Jesus meets on this journey has responded as readily as Zacchaeus to his summons—first, to come down from the tree, then to “come down” from his wealthy lifestyle and the

corruption that supported it. Although he did not travel to Jerusalem with Jesus, Zacchaeus clearly understood the demands of discipleship.
