Perhaps you have heard it said that, “Words Matter!” With this in mind, I thought that you might appreciate some of the words that have been used in recent weeks regarding my appointment as your new Pastor.
For instance, these are some of the words that Bishop Deshotel used in my official Letter of Appointment: “Dear Father Davis, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit. By virtue of this letter, and in accord with Canon 523, I am happy to appoint you as Pastor of Saint Anthony of Padua Parish in Eunice and Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Duralde. I commit to you the full care of souls in this Parish . . . I respectfully ask that you model patience and kindness after the model of Christ, the Good Shepherd. Please ask our people to pray for vocations and to pray for our Diocese. For most of my life I have served as a pastor. In these times of great challenges, I ask that you exhibit those priestly qualities which reflect the office to which Christ has called you. Generously give your life to the people you care for, imitating Jesus Christ who came to serve and not be served. May the Lord prosper the works of your hands.”
And these are some of the words that the Dean of the North Deanery, Very Rev. Fr. Tom Voorhies (the Bishop’s representative in our part of the Diocese of Lafayette) used at the Noon Mass here, on August 1st, as he presided over the Rite of Installation of your new Pastor: “My dear friends, because Bishop Deshotel is aware of your pastoral needs and is confident of Fr. Hampton Davis’ qualifications for the office of pastor, he has asked me to express, in his name, his pastoral concern for the people of this parish, and he commends Father Davis to you as your new pastor.” I was then invited to state clearly, “…with firm faith” that I “believe and profess everything that is contained in the symbol of faith, namely … “ by reciting the Nicene Creed and the Oath of Fidelity. Fr. Tom then reminded me that I have been gifted with
amazing partners in ministry, highlighting in a particular way our dedicated Associate Pastor, Deacons, Parish Staff and Parish Trustees. He then went on to make clear that I am to, “Share this ministry in a spirit of mutual trust, common prayer, and genuine concern.” Fr. Tom concluded the Rite of Installation with these clear and focused words: “Remember, my brother Hampton, always to be a loving father, a gentle shepherd, and a wise teacher of your people, so that you may lead them to Christ who will strengthen all that you do.”
Yes, my “Friends in Jesus”, words DO matter - and I hope that these words, addressed to you in my first homily, might continue to ring true: “Bishop Deshotel could have sent you a more intelligent pastor - and he could have sent you a pastor who is a better administrator. He could have sent you a pastor who is more physically fit and more organized. And he certainly could have sent you a pastor who is more holy - but he could not have sent you a pastor who will love you more than I will!” And so, as your officially installed - and very grateful - new pastor, I ask for your ongoing prayer cover, and I want you to know that you can trust my ongoing prayers for you and yours - especially at the Altar of the Lord!
