Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration

“Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Luke 1:30-32 Looking for a way to increase prayer in your life as we enter the third week of Advent? If you haven’t already, consider setting aside one hour each week before the Blessed Sacrament to prepare for the coming of our Lord at Christmas. If you already have a scheduled hour, consider adding another weekly hour. Or have a family member or friend sign up for a weekly hour.

Small Christian Communities

The early Christians met in homes to share the Gospel and “the breaking of the bread.” They were inclusive

communities whose members, after the example of Christ, shared their resources and reached out to others in service. They were people of faith who welcomed others seeking to find a spiritual home. As these communities grew in acceptance and in the number of believers, larger gatherings became the norm. The Church as we know it today emerged from these early home-based communities. The Small Christian Community enables its members to participate in the Christian Faith Community in the very manner that the earliest Christians experienced; on a personal level. Are you ready to be part of a Small Christian Community? For more information contact Mark and Kris Jablonski 714-524-9757 or [email protected]

Adult Confirmation 2019

Classes begin January 24th and are held on Thursday nights from 7:15 to 8:30 pm. Here are a few testimonials from some of the people in last year’s program…

‘I was confirmed in order to raise my family & I under God’s blessing. I was baptized as a baby so had no recollection of that. When I had the opportunity to be Confirmed as a young teenager, it felt forced or like it was what I was supposed to do without really knowing why I was doing it. Being Confirmed helped me to create my own personal bond with God.’ Kenneth Fraley ‘My motivation to getting Confirmed was to continue my faith and to show my kids the values of God and the Catholic Church. Being confirmed increased my faith by allowing me to share my experience with my family and God. The classes were very inspiring and made me want to learn more about my faith.’ Rex Elder ‘Not being in a High School Youth ministry program and switching parishes several times during high school, I felt I had missed out on Confirmation now that I was in my 20’s despite remaining very active in my faith. At St. Martin’s, I instantly felt welcomed and at home in a healthy thriving community and was pleased to find an Adult Confirmation program with seasoned and passionate leadership. Was an opportunity to grow in my faith with other likeminded active Catholics looking to receive this important sacrament.’ Anonymous

Faith Formation

Returning Catholics Invited to Come Home If you’ve been away from the Catholic Church for awhile, has the joy of the Christmas season inspired you to recall the richness and beauty of the Catholic faith you’ve missed? Were you, a friend or family member baptized Catholic but now feel separated from the Church? Have you missed being part of a Catholic faith community? We’ve missed you, too. The “Coming Home” ministry is designed to help you or your friend(s) feel at home in the Catholic Church once again, to answer questions, and to explain changes in the church that may have taken place while you were away. The series of six “Coming Home” sessions will be held from 7 – 9 p.m. on consecutive Wednesday evenings, January 2 through Feb. 6, 2019, in the Parish Center. No matter how long you’ve been away, and no matter what the reason, we invite you to renew your relationship with the Catholic Church. A team of parishioners, many themselves Catholics who returned after a long absence, supported by staff and clergy, plan a special program to help you regain direction in your faith, help you with sacramental preparation, or just provide support for you on your journey. To register or for further information, contact Maureen Williams at 714 679-4535 or the church office at 714-970-2771, or email [email protected].

Since the sixth century, the Church has celebrated the memory of those children killed because of Herod's rage against Christ (cf. Mt 2:16-17). Liturgical tradition refers to them as the "Holy Innocents" and regards them as martyrs. The horror of the massacre and the devastation of the mothers and fathers led Matthew to quote Jeremiah: “A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children….because her children are no more.” (Matthew 2:18). In our own times, children suffer innumerable forms of violence throughout the world which threaten their lives, and dignity. On this day, it is appropriate to recall the vast number of unborn children who have been killed under the laws permitting abortion. The Feast of Holy Innocents not only encompasses those lives but, the precious babies lost by miscarriage, stillbirth and sudden infant death syndrome. We ask you to join us for these special masses to honor them here at St. Martin's.

iGen: Understanding the Smartphone Generation and Finding a Balance with Technology The iGen is the first generation to spend their entire childhood in the age of the smartphone, and this fact alone seems to have an important impact on who they are and how they relate to the world. More than previous generations, they are obsessed with safety, focused on tolerance, and have no patience for inequality. They are also "on the brink of the worst mental health crisis in decades.” In this lively talk on January 13 and 14 at St. Juliana Parish Center in Fullerton we will explore the idea that iGen may be growing up more slowly than previous generations. Also, learn what practical tools may be utilized to best meet the developmental needs of children and encourage their independence and autonomy. Parents/Adults are welcome at any or all – but children under 9th grade should not attend as subject matter is not appropriate for younger teens/children. St. Juliana is located at 1316 N Acacia Ave. in Fullerton. For more information or to RSVP, visit: https://igen.eventbrite.com.

Our “guests” from the Interfaith Shelter Network arrived on Saturday, December 15 and will be staying with us through January 5, 2019.

We are still looking for support for our Food Coordinator (Lenny Castillo) through contributions of meals and specific items for our food pantry. We still need people to assist our Transportation Coordinator (Jim Thompsen) by signing-up to help transport some guests to and from local transportation hubs for their employment or job seeking efforts. We are also looking for volunteers to support our Overnight Coordinator (Deacon Nick Sherg) by signing up as either overnight or daytime supervisors.

Please contact Jody & Ronnie Martin at 714-777-5707 (or email [email protected])) for more information.

2018

As you review your tax planning for 2018, we ask that you consider a year-end gift to support St Martin de Porres Parish. Your charitable gift may be given directly to St Martin’s Parish in support of our many ministries, organizations, and programs. As you know, St Martin’s is a non-profit organization, so any contribution of support this year is tax deductible to you for 2018.

You can donate on-line through the Parish Web Site (www.smdpyl.org), you can drop off a check or make a credit card payment at the Parish Office, or you can receive a tax benefit by making gifts of appreciated securities. The last day to make a year-end gift this year is Monday, December 31, 2018. If you or your spouse have reached 70 ½ years of age, and are facing a Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA Account, a donation to St Martin’s is an excellent way to deal with that issue. To learn more about ways to make a year-end gift, please contact Nicole Parsons, Parish Planned Giving Coordinator, at the Parish Office 714-970-2771 or [email protected]. As this year comes to a close, open yourself up to new possibilities and success achieved through giving and receiving. Thank you for your continued support of St Martin de Porres Parish.
