REJOICE AND BE GLAD

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad” (Psalm 118:24). Let us remember that these words of today’s responsori-al psalm are not only sung from the hearts of those gath-

ered in our parish. They are also sung by the poor in tiny barrios throughout Central and South America. They are sung by those denied religious freedom in our world; these Christians lift their voices in clandestine places of worship. These words are sung by people who have lost loved ones to acts of terrorism and war around the globe. Even in the midst of conflict and division, Christians still come together to declare that pov-erty, loneliness, violence, and division will never, ever have as much power as the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Indeed, let us rejoice this day and be glad! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Heavens and earth

When the people of ancient times looked at the sky, they saw a place of wonder, beyond human understanding, a place where the gods dwelled. It still is.

As we celebrate the Paschal Triduum, you might want to recapture that sense of awe that ancient peoples had. Sometimes, because we know so much more about the heavens, we become blasé. Actually, as we look at pic-tures from space, we should be in even greater awe than those ancient peoples. Fourteen billion light years across, with trillions of trillions of planets, stars, and gal-axies, made up of innumerable electrons and protons, atoms and molecules. This is the huge universe that God created. This is the universe God rules.

And yet He took human form to save us. Just think of how remarkable it is that the God of that

huge universe is even aware of us. Then realize that He is not only aware, but concerned for us. So concerned that He became one of us and died for our sins.

There are two major holy days for the Christian world. One is Christmas, the other is Easter. If you are like most people, you spend much more time anticipating Christ-mas than Easter. Christmas is the birth of a child. It is presents and laughter and family and friends. It is joyful.

Easter, on the other hand, is not anticipated as much as experienced. There is Ash Wednesday, a day of sor-row. There are forty days of Lent, when we try to do some small thing to remind us of Jesus’ suffering. The Passion is read at Palm Sunday Mass, then again on Good Friday. Then, after seven weeks of “suffering,” there is one brief day of joy and in the minds of most people it’s over.

And yet that one day is the most important day in the history of mankind. Jesus rose from the dead. That one act is the basis of our belief. Without it, Jesus was just another prophet. With it, he proves he is God. With it, he opens the doors for us to heaven. Let that thought fill you during the next week. This should be a time of joy even greater than that which we feel at Christmas.

We will never understand God. We don’t have to. We just have to understand that He loves us. He accepted human form to teach us. He accepted human death to free us. Why didn’t God take the easy way? Why didn’t Jesus come down from the cross and conquer Rome? Why did he have to suffer and die? He was God!

Why? Because to do so would not have been human. Humans suffer, humans die. By rising from the dead, he showed that we should not fear death. Before that, how-ever, he experienced what it means to be human. Think about that. God knows how it feels to be human. He knows our fears and doubts and weaknesses. He thus becomes even more understanding, more loving.

By giving us free will, he allowed us the right to make our own choices. We can love God and love our neigh-bor, or we can love only ourselves.

When you look at the night sky, remember that. Heaven or hell, it is our choice. ~DN

Please join us in our 3rd Annual 3 -Day Prayer Devotion (Triduum) honoring San Pedro Calungsod on Thursday, Apr il 20 - 6:30PM, Friday, April 21 – 6:30PM, and Saturday, April 22 -3:15PM with the 4:00 mass immediately following at Our Lady of Mercy Church. Saint Pedro Calungsod is the second Filipino saint and was canonized in October 2012. He was a teenage na-tive of the Visayas region in the Philippines and served as a missionary lay catechist along with the Spanish Jesuit missionary Diego Luis San Vitores in Guam. He preached Christianity to the Chamorro people through catechism, baptizing infants, children and adults at the risk of being persecuted and was eventually murdered at the age of 17. Through San Pedro and San Vitores’ efforts, many native Chamorros converted to Roman Catholicism. Saint Pedro is the patron of the youth, altar boys, mi-grants, catechists, and the Overseas Filipino Workers.”
