Other features include: ammeter, fuel gauge, quick-adjustable
upper link, 6.00-16 front tires.
Optional equipment includes power steering as well as the
Hi-Altitude engine (8.10 to 1 compression ratio) specially de-
signed for operation above 4000 feet elevation. Standard or
P.A.V.T. (power adjusted) wheels are available with 11-28 rear
tires; 13-24 tires with special cast wheels are also available.
The MF 35 Special Tractor offers outstanding performanceat low cost. Original equipment on this tractor includes a
single clutch, the regular engine-speed PTO and the same engine(6.60 to 1 compression ratio) furnished with the Deluxe model.The Special model is equipped with 5.50-16 front tires and10-28 rear tires on standard wheels. Optional equipment on
this tractor is limited to 11-28 rear tires.

SERIAL NUMBER IDENTIFICATION
Each Tractor is identified by means of a Tractor Serial
Number. This serial number is recorded on a plate attached to
the instrument panel or the skirt. The engine has an Engine
Serial Number. The serial plate is attached to the left side of theengine block. For prompt, efficient service at your local M-FDealer, record these serial numbers and carry them with yourpersonal papers for ready reference.

Always lubricate and service your MF 35 Tractor at regular intervals. Regularmaintenance is essential to insure trouble-free performance throughout the life of thetractor. Make it a habit to service your tractor properly at the recommended intervals.This section of the manual describes the necessary lubrication and maintenance pro-cedures.

Use a good grade of pressure gun grease.Keep it clean! Wipe the fittings, lubricate, andremove excess grease.
Check Crankcase Dipstick
Maintain the oil level at the full mark.
Check Transmission, Hydraulic System& Differential Dipstick
Maintain oil level between the arrows.
Lubricate the Distributor
Remove distributor cap, put one drop oflight engine oil on breaker lever pivot and
several drops on felt wick under rotor. Apply
a trace of cup grease on distributor cam.
Oil the Generator
Put 10 drops light oil in each oiler. Do notover-lubricate

Service Air Cleaner Qoo) MONTHLY (200-Hour) LUBRICATION
Always service daily; more frequently undersevere dust conditions. Empty oil cup, scrapeout dirt. Fill to oil level mark with cleanseasonal engine oil. Replace cup securely.
Nevbr remove oil cup while engine is running.Clean the inlet hose if necessary. IMPORTANT:FOR FULL MAINTENANCE INFORMATION,SEE “AIR SYSTEM” IN THE SERVICINGSECTION.
TWO WEEK (100-Hour) LUBRICATION
Replace Oil Filter Element
Replace the filter element at every other
oil change. Wipe out the case. Check forleaks after installation. See Lube Chart for
element number.
SPRING-FALL (750-Hour) LUBRICATION

Change Oil in Crankcase
Drain when warm and refill to full mark onthe dipstick. See Lube Chart for grade and

DO NOT grease or oil the front axle pivot pin. Lubricate DO NOT use excessive oil on the generator or distributor.with dry graphite. DO NOT lubricate the boll joints of the lower links.
REGULAR MAINTENANCE OPERATIONSKeep your tractor in top-notch condition! Make these maintenance operations a
habit; carry them out regularly. Have your local M-F Dealer give your tractor acomplete check-up at least once a year in order to avoid costly break-downs. Whenyou need to make minor repairs or adjustments, consult the Servicing section ofthe manual.
DAILY (10-Hour) MAINTENANCE
Check the Radiator
Keep coolant about 1” above the core. Cleandirt, chaff, etc. from the fins.
CA UTION: Remove pressure capslowly. To relieve pressure,
turn cap to the first notch only. Wait... until pressure is fully relieved before
removing the cap.
Fill the Fuel Tank
Fill with clean gasoline through a screenedfunnel.
CAUTION: Stop the engine! Donot overfill! Do not spill fuel on
a hot engine.
WEEKLY (50-Hour) MAINTENANCE
Check the Battery
Clean and inspect cables, terminals andbattery surface. Clean off corrosion withbaking soda solution. Apply grease to preventfurther corrosion. Keep electrolyte level to
the bottom of the tube. Add distilled wateronly. Keep the wing nuts on the battery carrierfinger tight.
Check the Tires
Check pressure and inspect for damage.
Clean the Fuel Filter & Sediment Bowl
Shut off fuel valve, empty bowl and washfilter disc in solvent. Tighten disc filter fingertight only.

Carburetor
Remove the inlet elbow and clean the screen.When removing and replacing the elbow, threada fitting into it to prevent collapse.
Clean the Gasoline Tank
Flush to remove rust, dirt, etc.
Clean Air Cleaner Internal Filter
Remove the air cleaner and wash in a suitablesolvent. Check the connections for tightness.
Power Take-Off Control* Cover
Hydraulic System - Transmission -Differential:
Drain when the oil is warm (with both hy-draulic control levers in the "Down" position)by removing the two magnetic drain plugs.Remove, clean or replace, and reinstall thehydraulic filter screen as follows

Remove the power take-off control lever as-sembly. Reach inside and down to unscrew thewinged top bolt holding the filter assembly inplace. Remove the entire filter assembly by

lifting up. Be sure to remove the assembly asone unit. If the lower metal sump is allowedto drop off, the dirt and sludge accumulationwill fall back into the transmission case. Afterthe filter assembly is removed, take it apartand clean thoroughly. Take special care incleaning the screen and the sump.
Reinstall making sure the gasket is in place.(If gasket is damaged, replace it. ) Tighten thewinged bolt securely.
Reinstall power take-off control lever as-sembly making sure the shifting fork is inplace.
Reinstall magnetic drain plugs and fill with8 gallons of SAE 80 straight mineral oil.

The differential lock for the MF 35 tractor isoptional factory installed equipment. It is es-pecially advantageous for use where traction ispoor. By depressing the pedal, the operatorlocks the rear axles together so they pullsimultaneously. This must be done with care,to prevent damage to the rear end. The pedalshould be applied only at slow engine speedsand when one wheel is slipping while the otheris holding fast. When applied, it will enablethe tractor to pull through slick places in whichit would otherwise stall.
The differential lock may be released in oneof three ways. First, release the pedal, then
(1) clutch the tractor, (2) turn to the right, or,
(3) lightly depress the right brake pedal.

BREAK-IN PROCEDURE
Fuel Shut-Off Valve

TURN: Two turns left - opens main fuelsupply. Completely left - opens two-gallon
reserve supply.
Use reserve supply occasionally to preventcondensation, rust, etc.
Drive Carefully on the Highway
Your MF 35 Tractor was designed for a longlife of economical and trouble-free perform-
ance. A very important factor in that perform-ance is proper break-in. A little time spent oncareful break-in will be repaid by satisfactory
service, month after month.
1. During the first 25 hours, run your en-
gine under normal load at normal operatingtemperature. Avoid continuous light loads or
low engine RPM.2. When plowing or doing other heavy-load
operations, avoid overloading or lugging the
engine. Shift one gear lower than would nor-
mally be used. Vary the load, however, during
this period by shifting to a higher gear for
short intervals. This brings the engine up to
full load.
3. Change crankcase oil after the first 50
hours of operation.
4. Change the transmission oil after the
first 50 hours of operation.
STARTING THE TRACTOR
Sit in the seat and get accustomed to the
controls. Place your hands on the wheel and
your feet on the clutch and brake pedals. No-
tice the location of all the instruments and
controls.
CAUTION: Carbon monoxide isa killer. Never operate your
tractor engine in a closed building.
1. Turn ignition key to "I" position.
2. Move throttle 1/8 to 1/4 open.3. Push clutch pedal all the way down.4. Place the Dual Range lever in neutral.
5. Pull out choke and hold in position.
6. Press the starter button and release it
immediately when the engine starts.
CAUTION: Never operate the startingmotor for periods longer than 30
seconds without pausing for two min-
utes to allow it to cool.
7. Release choke as soon as engine runs
smoothly.
8. Do not "rev-up" or race the engine im-mediately after starting.
9. Allow the engine to reach its normal
operating temperature before working the
tractor. During cold weather the oil pressure
gauge will register a higher pressure. Whenthis condition exists, the engine should be run

at an idle speed until the pressure reaches itsnormal position.
NOTE; If the engine is hot and fails tostart or if the carburetor becomes'flooded", pull the hand throttle downwhile starting. Do not use the choke.
CAUTION: Never operate the 8.10 to 1 Hi—Altitude engineat elevations less than 4000 feet above sea level.
At elevations from 4000 to 5000 feet NEVER use gasolinewith less than the recommended 82—84 octane rating.
WATCH THE INSTRUMENTS
Oil Pressure Gauge
Oil pressure gauge must register "normal"or "high" upon starting a cold engine.
Never run the engine with a LOW oil pres-sure reading.
Ammeter*
Normally reads on (+) side of dial (batterycharging).
Call your MF Dealer if ammeter continuallyindicates discharge or excessive charging rate.
Temperature Gauge
Should stay in green NORMAL range aftertractor warms up. Overheating occurs whenthe indicator enters the red sector beneath the"7". If overheating occurs, carefully checkthe radiator. If water is needed, add it slowlywith the engine idling.
CAUTION: When removing thepressure - type radiator cap,
slowly and carefully turn to the firstnotch. This will relieve the pressure,thus preventing injury from escaping
steam.
DRIVING THE TRACTOR
clutch tractors, the clutch pedal need only bedepressed through the first stage.
3. Open throttle slightly and release clutchpedal slowly.
4. Slowly increase throttle setting until de-sired speed is reached.
CAUTION; Sharply braking onewheel causes wasteful tire and
brake wear, and therefore, shouldonly be done when short turns are ne-cessary. INDIVIDUAL WHEEL BRAK-ING SHOULD NOT BE ATTEMPTEDWHILE TRAVELINGA THIGHSPEEDS.
CAUTION; Do not let your foot reston or ride the clutch pedal.
Selecting the Correct Gear
Three important factors in selecting a work-ing gear are:
1. Designed speed of the implement.2. Field conditions.
3. Tractor performance.
A good torque characteristic enables yourMF 35 to lug through tough spots without throttleor gear changes. Chose gears so that the en-gine does not lug excessively.
To start the tractor in motion after the engineis operating, proceed as follows : Continued overloading causes overheatingand
excessive engine wear.1. Release the brakes.2. Depress the clutch pedal fully and move
the dual range lever to either high or low range Racing the engine under light load causesand gear shift lever to desired gear. On dual poorfuel economy.

Test for Overloading
With the tractor moving, set throttle half-wayopen. Quickly pull throttle wide open. If theengine only picks up speed slowly, the tractoris overloaded. Shift to a lower gear. Inter-mittent overloads in hilly operation are notharmful.
Stopping the Tractor
1. Depress the clutch pedal while reducingengine speed.
2. Apply both brakes as needed to stop.3. Put the gear shift and dual range levers
in "neutral”.
4. Lock the toe-trip parking latch.5. Turn off the ignition switch.
ATTACHING AND DETACHINGIMPLEMENTS
The exclusive MF Hydraulic System combinesyour tractor and implement into a closely-coupled working unit. Quadramatic controlsprovide complete implement control at yourfinger tips. Attaching implements to the three-point linkage is fast and easy:
1. Back the tractor to the implement; keepthe lower links lined-up with the implementhitch pins.
2. Position the lower links all the way down.3. Attach left lower link; secure with linch
pin. Use leveling crank if necessary in attach-ing right lower link.
4. Attach upper link. Adjust to nominallength for normal field conditions.

Nominal length: 27 inches (line up thenotches on the bar
sections or * adjust so that deep ring grooves are just
showing.)

To detach implements:
1. Lower the implement on level ground.2. Detach the upper link from the tractor.3. Detach right lower link (use leveling
crank as needed). Detach left lower link.4. Secure linch pins in their clips.

HYDRAULIC SYSTEMQUADRAMATIC CONTROLS
The operation of hydraulically - controlledimplements attached to the MF 35 tractor isgoverned by two Quadramatic Control levers:
1) the Hydralever, 2) the Draft Control Lever.
HYDRALEVER
1. The Hydralever is basically used to raiseand lower mounted implements.
2. The Hydralever allows position control ofimplements; that is, the lower links move up ordown in direct relation to the movement of theHydralever.
DRAFT CONTROL LEVER
1. The Draft Control Lever governs thedepth and the draft (pull) of soil-engaging im-plements when draft control is being used.
2. As the draft of the implement varies,draft control (actuated by the control spring)
automatically raises or lowers the implementto compensate for soil variations.
POSITION CONTROL
Use position control when operating mowers,side rakes, cultivators, planters, blades or
any implement requiring a fixed height inde-pendent of draft.

Using the Hydraulic Controls
1. Move the Draft Control Lever all the waydown (so that the Draft Control Lever will notoverride the Hydralever).
2. Move the Hydralever up or down for thedesired height or depth.
3. When you want to raise an implement andreturn it to the same height or depth, move theHydralever stop into position and secure theknurled nut.
CAUTION; Never leave an im-plement in a raised position.
DRAFT CONTROL
Use draft control when operating plows, har-rows, tillers, sub-soilers, bedders or othersoil-engaging implements.
To use draft control:
1. Lower the implement from transport tooperating position with the Hydralever. Pushthe Hydralever all the way down.
2. Use the Draft Control Lever to arrive ata working depth for the implement.
3. With the draft lever located for averageworking depth, center the adjustable sector inline with the draft lever and secure the sectorwith the knurled nut.
4. Using the adjustable sector knob for a re-ference point, minor field corrections can bemade within the sector by raising the draftlever slightly for lighter soils and lowering forheavier soils to maintain uniform depth. Re-turn to normal depth by realigning knobs.
5. Adjust the draft response (lower sectionof Hydralever quadrant) so that the hydraulic

USING EXTERNAL HYDRAULIC EQUIPMENT
An auxiliary control valve is normally usedto operate external hydraulic cylinders. For
illustrations and descriptions of available
valves, installation, operation, etc. , see Hy-
draulic Control Valves, Break-Away Couplers
and Hydraulic Cylinders under "Accessories”.
Draft response refers to the speed with which
the hydraulic system reacts to changes in draft.Varying soil texture, uneven ground, hidden
obstacles and changing speeds are all factors
which necessitate changes in draft response.
The lower end of the Hydralever quadrant isused for draft response adjustment. If an im-
plement bobs or bounces, move the Hydralevertoward "slow”. In stony conditions or in vary-
ing soil textures the hydraulic system may notrespond to changes in draft rapidly enough. In
this case, move the Hydralever towards "fast".When you find a suitable response setting, youmay want to lock the Hydralever stop in thatposition. In that way, you can maintain the
same response setting after raising and lower-ing the implement.
OVERLOAD RELEASE
Whenever the draft of an implement increases
more than 2000 lbs. over the Draft ControlLever setting, the hydraulic system goes into
overload release. This protective feature re-
leases the implement weight and draft from the
hydraulic system. There is a loss of traction
and the tractor wheels spin. The operator can
quickly push in the clutch, raise the implement,
and clear the obstruction.
Hydraulic outlets are provided in the hydrau-
lic lift cover for certain external applications.
There is a pressure port on each side of the
lift cover near the front. A return port at theleft rear of the lift cover opens to the tractor
sump. All of the ports are supplied with
socket-head pipe plugs.
POWER TAKE-OFF
"Engine PTO"is the standard or proportionalengine-speed drive. With the engine at 1700
RPM, the PTO speed is 540 RPM (ASAE stand-ard for most PTO equipment).
"Ground PTO"* is a proportional ground-speed drive. The PTO turns one revolution forabout each twenty inches of forward travel re-
gardless of speed or gear. "Ground PTO" isvery useful with side rakes, lister planters,
etc.
The PTO shaft is a 1-3/8 inch (ASAE Std.
)
shaft. The annular (ring) groove allows fast
connection with push-button PTO couplers.
Operating Precautions:
NOTE: The later model tractors,which are equipped with a hydraulic
system filter, do not have the over-
load release feature. This safety
measure is now taken care of in im-plement design.
CAUTION: The protective fea-ture of the overload release
may be lost if an implement is oper-ated at excessive speeds beyond the
normal range of operation.
Always depress the clutch pedal fully before
engaging the PTO shift lever.
The dual clutch* will- aid in clearing heavyloads from balers, mowers, etc. Depress the
clutch pedal through the first stage to stop
tractor motion and keep the PTO running.
CAUTION: Shift from "Ground PTO"*to "neutral" before backing the trac-
tor. Otherwise, the implement mech-
anism will be reversed and damaged.

LIQUID-FILLING THE TIRES
For certain operations or for difficult condi-tions, it may be desirable to use additionalweight for increased traction. The accessorywheel weights were especially designed for thispurpose. They are easily removed for betterfuel economy whenever the extra weight is notneeded. Those owners who prefer to liquid-fill the tractor tires will find the following in-
formation useful.
It is better to use calcium chloride solutionthan water; the freezing point is lower and thedensity (weight) is greater. The solution des-cribed in the table contains 3. 5 lbs. calciumchloride per gallon of water. The freezingpoint is 30° below zero F. Although the figuresin the table describe a 100% fill, it is possibleto partially fill the tires by using lesseramounts.
CAUTION: Always add the calciumchloride to the water and never the
reverse.

4. Torque the clamp bolts at 90-100 ft. lbs.and reinstall wheel.

UNIVERSAL SWINGING DRAWBAR(If So Equipped)
The universal swinging drawbar can be setinto two oositions. The forward position pro-vides for a standard 14 inch distance from thedrawbar hole to the PTO shaft end and in therearward position provides the same distanceto the PTO extension. When operating powertake-off pull behind implements, the drawbarin its rearmost position provides for a shorterturning radius of the combined tractor and im-plement. Laterally the bar may be fixed withthe hitch point central or in any one of thethree positions to either side.
When operating close coupled implements,the drawbar need not be removed. Remove theclevis pin and one positioning bolt and move thedrawbar forward and to one of the outer holesin the clevis. Install the positioning bolt
through the rear hole in the drawbar and installthe clevis pin as shown. This will conveniently
move the drawbar under the tractor and out ofthe way.
To attach the swinging drawbar:
1. Insert the bar into the clevis mounted tothe underside of the tractor differential housing.
2. Connect the bar into the clevis by insert-ing the hitch pin from the bottom and securewith the hair pin.
3. Position the drawbar as desired and se-cure it with the positioning bolts.
PREPARING THE TRACTORFOR STORAGE
li your tractor is to be idle for an extendedperiod of time, carefully prepare it for storage.Select a dry and protected place where it is notexposed to weather or to livestock.
1. Thoroughly clean the tractor and touch-up all rust spots with a handy spray-pack.
2. Lubricate as follows:
Lubricate all pressure grease fittings.
Drain and refill the crankcase. Change the filter element.
Drain and refill the transmission. Clean the magnetic drain
plugs.
Remove air cleaner and clean thoroughly. Wash internalfilter in a suitable solvent. Reinstall and refill the oil cup
Check steering housing oil level.
Check power steering reservoir on tractors so equipped.
Repack the wheel bearings.

3. Start the engine and bring it to operatingtemperature.
4. Cooling system and fuel tank:
Drain and flush the cooling system. Filling with anti-freeze (for sub-freezing temperatures) or water is a goodpractice. Always use a suitable rust inhibitor. If coolingsystem i s not refi lied, be sure to close the draincocks andpressure cap to deep out dirt, etc.
Drain the fuel tank completely. Replace the cap.
Remove, clean and reinstall the sediment bowl, gas lineand carburetor.
5. Remove the sparkplugs; clean and regapat 0. 025 inch.
6. Before reinstalling spark plugs, pour twotablespoons of heavy lubricating oil into eachcylinder top. Turn the engine over severaltimes and reinstall plugs.
7. Remove the battery. Store it, fullycharged, in a cool place. Protect from freez-ing. Check the state of charge at two-weekintervals.
8. Jack the tractor up on sturdy blocks. Ifthe tires are filled with water only, drain toprevent freezing.

9. Cover the ends of the exhaust pipe and
breather pipe. Cover the tractor with a tar-paulin or storm cover.
REMOVING THE TRACTORFROM STORAGE
1. Remove the spark plugs and pour twotablespoons of a mixture of one-half gasoline
and one-half light lubricating oil into each
cylinder.
2. Reinstall spark plugs.
3. Install fully charged battery making sure
that the proper connections are made. Thetractor battery is negative-grounded.
4. Fill the cooling system with proper
coolant.
5. Fill the fuel tank.
6. Check the oil level in the crankcase,
transmission and air cleaner.
7. Remove coverings from exhaust andbreather pipes.
8. Inspect and tighten all nuts, bolts and
screws.9. Start the engine and allow it to run at an
idle for 10 to 15 minutes. Check the oil gauge
to determine if the engine is receiving proper
lubrication.

ADJUSTING THE FAN BELT
To properly tension the fan belt, it is neces-sary to pivot the generator slightly. Loosen
the bolt in the slotted bracket and the two pivot
bolts beneath the generator. Adjust to give 1/2
inch belt deflection under hand pressure.
Tighten the bolts securely.
THERMOSTAT
An inoperative thermostat will cause improperwarm-up and operating temperatures, resultingin excessive condensation and crankcase
dilution. Operating with the thermostat re-
moved will have the same effects. The thermo-stat is housed in a cast-iron elbow between the
upper radiator hose and the cylinder head.

To replace the thermostat, remove the upperhose and the cast-iron elbow. Check the new
thermostat by immersing it in water. It should
begin to open at 157-163 F. and should be fully
open at 175-185°F. Use a new gasket when
installing the cast elbow. Inspect the hoses
and tighten the clamps as needed.
CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENTS
NOTE: A porous plug is incorporatedin the bottom of the carburetor. This
non-removable plug allows conden-
sation and excess fuel to escape.
Idling - Air Adjustment
Open the idling adjustment screw (1 to 1-1/4turns) until the engine idles smoothly whenwarm.
Idling - Speed Adjustment
Turn the adjusting screw to increase or de-crease speed. Adjust to 450 RPM idling speed.
Main Jet Adjustment
Adjust the main jet by turning-in the needle
valve to the fully closed position (not tight) and
opening 1 to 1-1/4 turns for the operating
settings. Field-test the tractor under normal
load by quickly moving the throttle from half-
open to full-open position. If the engine coughs
and stalls, open the main jet 1/16 turn and
repeat the test.
IMPORTANT: An excessively leanmixture reduces power, overheats the
engine and may cause burned valves.Never set the main jet less than oneturn open.
AIR SYSTEM
NEGLECTING AIR SYSTEM MAINTENANCE ISONE OF THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OFENGINE FAILURE — SOME PRECAUTIONS:
1. Service the air cleaner bowl daily or
oftener in very dusty conditions.
2. Clean the rubber inlet hose when dirty.

4. From time to time inspect the hoseconnections. Tighten if necessary. Check thehoses and tubes for any crack which mightallow unfiltered air to enter the system.
SPARK PLUGS (Heat Range)
Hot plugs are designed for use in coldweather for intermittent operation under lightload. Cold plugs may be used during hotweather for steady operation under heavy load.Some indications that cooler plugs may beneeded are rapid burning of the electrodes orblistering of the insulator tips. Hotter plugswill often remedy fouling with oily carbondeposits. Remember, however, that this typeof fouling may also result from poor carburetoradjustment, faulty rings or other causes.
VALVE ADJUSTMENTS
Proper valve adjustment is essential forquiet smooth operation and long valve life.Excessive tappet clearance results in noisyand uneconomical operation while inadequateclearance causes burned valves.
Hot Cold
Tappet clearance: .013” .015”
The valves should be set “hot”.Have the engine running (auxiliary fuel tank)
at a slow idle at normal operating temperature.
GOVERNOR ADJUSTMENTS
The governor mechanism is completely en-closed by the timing gear housing except for thecontrol linkage. Although you should never at-tempt to adjust or repair the enclosed mechan-ism, you may find it necessary to service theexternal linkage. Faulty or erratic operation,
surging etc. may be due to excessive dirt,wear, binding or improper length adjustment ofthis external linkage. Never lubricate throttleor governor linkage.
If governor action is responsive, note the topengine RPM on the tractormeter. The maxi-mum engine speed should be 2200-2250 RPM.If this condition does not exist, loosen U-boltand turn assembly on throttle rod until correctspeed is obtained.

The points should meet squarely and havethe proper gap. For a more accurate feeler-gauge reading, clean the point surfaces with a

CLUTCH PEDAL FREE-PLAY
The normal free play necessary for efficientoperation is 3/4 inch. This is measuredbetween the clutch pedal and the bottom of theradius rod clamp.

Clutch Pedal Free Play
1. Insert a rod through the hole in the clutchpedal shaft. Loosen the clamp bolt.
2. Turn the shaft clockwise until you feelthe clutch finger engage the release bearing
(noticeable resistance).
3. Move the clutch pedal on the shaft untilthere is 3/4 inch free-play. Tighten the clutch
pedal clamp securely.
ADJUSTING THE BRAKES
To adjust the brakes, raise the rear wheelsoff the ground. Remove the adjusting holecover. Tighten the adjusting screw until youfeel drag on the wheel, then back off the screw.
Check drag after each click.
If the brakes are malfunctioning due to
very damp climatic conditions, it maybe necessary to "bum-in" the linings
before adjustment. With its rear
wheels raised, run the tractor in high
range -first gear. Lock one brake on
and partially apply the other brake
until the brake drum is too hot totouch. Repeat the procedure on the
opposite brake. Allow the drums tocool, then adjust.
Check the master brake setting (both brake
pedals locked together). Apply the master
brake while driving the tractor on level ground.
The tractor should come to a stop in a straight
line. If it pulls to one side, shorten the brake
linkage (by adjusting the clevis on the rod) on
the opposite side.

Differential Lock Adjustment

DIFFERENTIAL LOCK
The differential lock needs very little main-tenance. However, it is important that the
notches of the locking mechanism be fully en-gaged. The pedal should not touch the stepplate when the locking mechanism is engaged.If the pedal does touch the step plate adjust-
ment is made as follows:
1. Loosen the clamp lock nut until the pedalshaft will rotate on the differential lock shaft.
2. Pull up on the pedal shaft until it clears
the step plate by 3-1/2" when the differentiallock is disengaged.
3. Tighten clamp locknut securely.
FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT
Periodically check the front wheels for toe-
in of 0 to 1/4 inch. Measure between the tire

position it at an angle to the front. The jackpin fits in the hole in the front main supportcasting.

Auxiliary hydraulic control valves bring youfinger-tip control of one or more externalhydraulic cylinders. These auxiliary controlvalves do not prevent the use of the regularhydraulic controls in connection with the three-point linkage. Once installed, they may remainon the tractor.

7. To use single-acting and double-actingcylinders simultaneously, always attach thedouble-acting cylinder to the valve to the rightof the single-acting cylinder.

9. Always keep the by-pass valve turned in.

Theends are groove-marked at half-inch spacings.The nominal length of 27 inches is indicatedwhen the deep ring grooves show at each end ofthe center tube. Under normal field conditionsuse the recommended nominal upper link set-ting. Unusual field conditions may necessitateminor adjustment.

The Universal Swinging Drawbar features aforward and a rear position to maintain thestandard 14" distance from the drawbar hole tothe end of the PTO shaft or PTO extension.When you are using closely-coupled imple-ments, this drawbar need not be removed.
Just pull the front pivot pin, push the bar for-ward and secure the rear end with one of thepositioning bolts.
PTO EXTENSIONS
When attaching most pull-type PTO equip-ment to your tractor, you must use an exten-sion and shield to meet A. S. A. E. specificationsfor a standard hitch. See implement manualfor recommendation.
Two PTO extensions are available:
1. A 6-inch stub-shaft extension for usewith either of the swinging drawbars.
2. A 12-inch extension with support housingfor use with the extension "V" drawbar.
A shield is supplied with each of these exten-sions. The stub shaft is installed on the PTOshaft and secured with a single bolt. To installthe 12-inch extension, remove the check chainanchor brackets and secure the support housingin position. Wrap the check chains around thelower links to keep them out of the way. Installthe shield.
NOTE; If you have removed the checkchain brackets and are reinstallingthem, make sure that the chains areattached in the upper holes.

dust conditions to remove large particles of
dust, dirt and foreign material from the air
before it reaches the air cleaner.
The kit includes the precleaner, tube, a new
hood-ornament casting, and attaching hard-
ware. For late model tractors, the present
trademark emblem is used to fasten the newhood-ornament casting to the front of the hood.
The earlier model tractors, having the sepa-
rate air scoop, will require ordering the latest
model emblem and attaching parts in additionto the kit.
A prescreener kit is available for use with,and in addition to, the precleaner when working
in crops such as cotton and soybeans. This
prescreener (repair part 193 715 M91) must be
ordered separately.
The cover and bowl are easily removed for
cleaning and should be removed before raising
the hood. This removal will prevent dirt and
dust from entering the tube.
Multi-Power Shift Lever
1. Shift Lever
MULTI-POWER TRANSMISSION
The multi-power transmission provides 12
forward and 4 reverse speeds. This wide range
promotes greater efficiency in all operations.
Multi-power provides a shift-on-the-go ad-
vantage. This can be done without clutching.
Simply move the shift lever up for high rangeand down for low range.
OPERATING PRINCIPLES
1. Starting or stopping the tractor - multi-
power lever. May be in either high or lowposition.
2. The multi-power lever can be moved
without disengaging the clutch.
3. Multi-power engages at the same speedregardless how fast the lever is moved. Al-
ways move lever all the way up or down.4. Disengage the clutch only when you move
the gear shift or dual range lever.
5. Multi-power may be operated continu-ously in high or low range.
6. For engine breaking while coming down
hill, shift the M-P lever to "High".7. The multi-power transmission has an
overrunning characteristic which prevents the
tractor from being started by towing or pushing.
8. Parking:
a. Set the parking brake.
b. Put tractor in gear:
(a) First gear — facing uphill(b) Reverse gear — facing downhill.
c. Put dual range lever in "Low". M-Plever may be in ,rHigh" or "Low".
9. The M-P transmission has a "hill-hold"characteristic. When pulling uphill with theM-P in "High”, depress the clutch pedal throughthe first stage only — the hill-hold will preventthe tractor from rolling backwards. Hill-hold
applies in both forward and reverse.
10. If there is difficulty shifting gears on
hills — move the M-P lever to "Low".11. Multi-power transmissions are adjusted
at the factory.
If operating difficulties occur, call your au-
thorized M F Dealer.12. Lubrication:
Use straight mineral oil in the multi-power
transmission.
SAE 90 above 50° FSAE 80 below 50° FDrain after the first 50 hours of operation
and at 750 hour intervals thereafter.
