Massive Public Offering
The world’s largest fintech company, China’s Ant Group, will try to raise nearly $35 billion in a huge public offeringof stock that would shatter records. Alibaba-affiliatedAnt Group, which operates a suite of financial productsincluding the Alipay digital wallet in China and one of theworld’s largest money market funds, will hold listings inShanghai and Hong Kong. Its Shanghai stock was pricedat 68.8 yuan ($10.26) each, while its Hong Kong stock ispriced at 80 Hong Kong dollars apiece ($10.32), accordingto filings Monday. The company will raise about $34.5billion from the offering, which would surpass oilcompany Saudi Aramco’s $29 billion share sale lastyear, making Ant Group’s offering the biggest in theworld. Ahead of the IPO, Ant Group would be valued atabout $280 billion. If it exercises its greenshoe option, which would allow selling more shares than initiallyplanned, it could raise another $5.17 billion, taking itsvaluation to about $320 billion. Ant Group will list on theHong Kong stock exchange Nov. 5, according to anexchange filing. A trading date for Shanghai has not beenfixed. The company has its origins in Alipay, which wascreated to serve as an escrow service on Alibaba’s e-commerce platform. Alipay would hold the money paidby the buyer until the transaction was complete, thenrelease the funds to the sellers to boost trust in theplatform among consumers. In 2011, Alipay was spun offfrom Alibaba. It was later renamed Ant Financial, thenAnt Group. Over the years, Ant has introduced morefinancial services and now operates Alipay as a digitalwallet that allows users in China to transfer money toothers and pay for purchases both online and offline.
Restaurant Brands Struggle
Restaurant Brands International Inc. reported lowerthird-quarter profits compared with a year ago as salesdropped due to the pandemic. The parent company ofTim Hortons, Burger King and Popeyes, which keeps itsbooks in U.S. dollars, said Tuesday its net incomeamounted to US$223 million or 47 cents per diluted share, down from net income of US$351 million or 75 cents perdiluted share a year earlier. Revenue totalled US$1.34billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, down from US$1.46billion in the same period a year ago. The company saidthe year-over-year decrease in sales was primarilydriven by a decline at Tim Hortons and Burger King anda decrease in supply chain sales, partially offset by anincrease in sales at Popeyes. RBI chief executive JoseCil said while restaurants have made “steady progress”reopening, the company’s performance also reflected“certain more challenging impacts of the pandemic onconsumer behaviour.” “Routines remain on hold for asignificant percentage of people as many offices, schoolsand other establishments remain closed,” he said duringa conference call with analysts. As a result, Cil said theimpact on consumption patterns has caused variability inthe pace of recovery across regions. But he said thecompany remains focused on the “long-term positioning”of its three major brands in a bid to return to growth. Cilsaid RBI is proceeding as planned with the so-calledportfolio optimization noted in the previous quarter, whichwill replace older underperforming restaurants with newlocations.
Unique CFL Owner Passes
David Braley, the Hamilton businessman who ownedthree CFL franchises, has died. He was 79. The B.CLions said in a statement that Braley died in hisBurlington, Ont., home Monday morning. A cause ofdeath was not provided for the owner and chairman ofthe Lions. Braley was born in Montreal but raised inHamilton. After attending McMaster University, hebegan his business career with General Motors Ac-ceptance Corporation in Hamilton before joining LondonLife Insurance. He also bought William Orlick Limited(now Orlick Industries Ltd) —an auto parts manufac-turer in Stoney Creek, Ont. He remained the company’sowner and president. Braley entered the CFL in 1987as the owner of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The franchisebecame community owned in 1990. But the resident ofBurlington, Ont., wasn’t gone long, returning to footballownership in 1997 when he bought the Lions. He alsoowned soccer’s Vancouver 86ers and later the A-League’s Vancouver Whitecaps, until 2000. RickLeLacheur, president of the Lions, said in a statement:“One of his final acts of devotion to Canadian footballwas a clear expression of his desire that the stability ofour club be maintained through a smooth transitionfollowing his passing. We will work closely with David’sestate to follow that plan.” Braley secured himself aunique position on the Canadian sports landscape in2010 when he became the Toronto Argonauts’ owner, the only person in league history to own two franchisessimultaneously. That prompted media to suggest gamesinvolving the Argos and Lions were for the BraleyBowl. Braley maintained ownership of the Argos untilMay 2015 when he announced the sale of the franchiseto Bell and Larry Tanenbaum, the chairman of MapleLeafs Sports & Entertainment. Braley has also servedas the chairman of the CFL’s board of governors andas interim commissioner (March 2002 to November2002). Braley’s football teams have won four GreyCups. B.C. has accounted for three of them (2000, 2006and 2011) while Toronto captured the historic 100thGrey Cup in 2012.
Merciful Victory
Khabib Nurmagomedov defended his UFC lightweightchampionship with a victory over Justin Gaethje lastSaturday night at UFC 254 in Abu Dhabi by finishing theAmerican with a triangle choke in the second round.According to former fighter and current analyst DanielCormier, Nurmagomedov went with the choke insteadof the armbar he was originally set up for to end the fightout of compassion and not seriously injure Gaethje. “Hetold me when he was watching the interviews over thecourse of the week, he saw that Justin said that hewould never tap,” Cormier told ESPN’s Ariel Helwanion the DC & Helwani program. Gaethje’s parents werein attendance at the fight in Abu Dhabi Saturday. That’s what happened as Gaethje showed no signs ofserious injury once coming to after the referee called astop to the fight. Nurmagomedov moved to 29-0 withthe victory and then surprisingly announced his retire-ment in a post-fight interview. The lightweightchampion’s father and primary coach, AbdulmanapNurmagomedov, died in July from a heart complicationcomplicated by COVID-19. Cormier believes the Rus-sian fighter is done for good.

‘The Bachelorette’ Blown-Up
ABC gave us a sneak peek of next week’s drama on“The Bachelorette.” In the teaser, host Chris Harrisontells a tearful current Bachelorette Clare Crawley thatshe has just “blown up ‘The Bachelorette.’” Whatfollows is more tears, more angry contestants and, finally,a camera shot of former “The Bachelor” contestant and“Bachelor in Paradise” participant Tayshia Adamsemerging from a swimming pool with a smile. There hasbeen speculation that Crawley left the show early aftershe fell hard for contestant Dale Moss and that Adamstook her place. No one involved has confirmed thatscenario, but ABC didn’t put the rumors to rest withTuesday night’s episode, which focused on the blossom-ing love between Crawley and Moss. Viewers will haveto wait until next week when “The Bachelorette” airs ona special night, Thursday to see how it all pans out.
