Galle fort areaThe new entrance gate of Galle fort

The building height should not exceed the height of rampart. The boundary fences surrounding the lands located by the side of the entrance road should be removed. Everyone should be able to access into these areas. So there’s a possibility of developing it as a public area. Possible to develop the area as a place that guide and direct the tourists towards the fort area. Along with it, a gathering area where the tourists can sit and plan their schedule can be established. So that the node directing

towards the lighthouse street, Rampart Street and Church Street will turn into an active node. Possible to establish an area providing permits for vehicular entry.

Post office area

Land filling cannot be done. If not it will create a severe damage to the adjacent building walls due to the force exerted on them and dampness.

External walls should not be painted in white colour in order to retain and emphasize the quality of nearby buildings such as Dutch reformed church, library.

The building height should not exceed the height of the Queen’s house. The existing facade of the post office should be preserved.

The Site next to additional magistrate court

Buildings should be one or two stories. A linear open space should be allocated between the proposed building and the existing additional magistrate court. So that it will

provide opportunities to develop the existing court building in future even with a different activity/ activities by creating access from the two longer facades.

Site at kotuwa kade

The building height should not exceed two stories. There is a possibility of creating a semi-public area facing the church street. Access should be made from the two adjacent streets; leyn baan cross street and church street.

New city areaDo not establish larger foot print of buildings

The existing plot containing the police station and the post office has a larger foot print. As a result it can be separated into two important plots by introducing a new street across the land while enhancing the linkages.

The police station can be shifted and the existing library building located along the wakwella road can be relocated at the cleared land which is very much closer to the city center.

There is a possibility of developing a conventional center at this area which can provide certain essential requirements to the citizens. Development of coastal belt along the sea road into an active pedestrian walk way.

The two sides of the sea street do not function at an equal level. At present the sea walks made along the sea are not been used often by pedestrians but the opposite side of the sea street is being very well used. This can be overcome by introducing a row of small shops of food outlets and beverages located separately at a distant of 10m. This could be a modular structure which contains the same architectural language and the outdoor seating areas which connect them together.

Improve the accessibility , permeability and views.

The commercial zone boundered by two major streets namely the main street and the sea street can be separated into several small blocks while enhancing the circulation and the connectivity around the buildings. This improves the permeability of the whole area and creates a nice panoramic view of the sea through buildings.

There is a possibility to erect a new restaurant in the empty land next to the NIBM building facing the sea street. So it will facilitate a larger crowd.

The boundary fences of Dharmapala park should be removed while enhancing the accessibility and utility of the area.

preserve the historic buildings and do not affect the architectural character when doing certain renovations.

The front side of the existing fruit market should be developed in order to make it more active and functionable as the other side facing the main street. So the frontage of the fruit market can be rearranged by creating a podium like area by lifting it above the ground level that can be used as an outdoor seating area .

Attention should be paid in maintaining clarity and clear streets around the fruit market.

Strengthen the city center

The esplanade which is considered as the main space should maintain continuous views towards the sea from the two sides. Do not erect buildings that block the view towards the sea when looking from the esplanade.
