Restaurants: Monday Week 1 of 2 Daily Goal / Focus of Lesson: The Parts of a Menu

Lesson Objectives: Materials:

Students Will:

Identify the terms for categories of a menu

Categorize menu items.

Practice phrases used for ordering food.

Mingle Activity

(find at the end of this lesson)

Pictures of restaurant foods

Activity Ideas:

Warm Up: Mingle about Restaurants 1) Introduce the mingle questions found at the end of this lesson; model the activity for ss.

2) Let ss mingle until they have talked to most/all people in the class.

3) Have ss share the foods they like to order w/ the class; make a list on the board.

Objective 1: Identify and spell the terms for categories of a menu 1) Introduce vocab: main dishes, sandwiches, appetizers, side dishes, beverages, desserts

-Using the list of foods on the board, give examples of foods from the first category. Teach the word "main

dishes". Ask ss for a few more examples of main dishes.

-Do the same thing with the other categories. Periodically, return to the previous categories to review the

word and its pronunciation.

-When all the categories have been covered, erase the categories and ask ss to name & spell them again.

Ask different ss to come up to the board to write the word.

Objective 2: Categorize menu items -Erase the board and elicit/write the parts of a menu again.

-Have ss work in pairs/groups to write new lists of items that can be in each part of a menu.

-You could give them magazine pictures and have them paste next to the words.

-Find out which group has the longest list for each category and ask them to share what is in their list.

Objective 3: Practice phrases for ordering food 1) Introduce phrases:

-Ask ss what they say to order food. Elicit language from ss; add to the list if appropriate. -Phrases could

include: *I'll have the ___, please. *I'd like the ___. *Can I have the ___?

-Practice the phrases as a large group until they feel comfortable/confident.

2) Practice phrases:

-Pass out a few pictures of food/food realia to each student, and organize them in small groups. Go around

the circle, and have each student say a phrase to order the food that they have. For example: if I have a

picture of soup, I would say "I'd like the ___." Keep going around the circle until they've used all their

foods and all the phrases.

-For more practice, ss mingle and tell at least three other students what they'd like to order.

Wrap Up: Review menu categories and/or ordering phrases -Give each student a slip of paper with a few items listed on it--all in the same menu category. They read

the list to the class, and the class has to guess which category.

-Or, do a dictation with the menu vocab or the ordering phrases.

-Or, play hangman with key vocab.

Restaurants: Tuesday, Week 1 of 2 Daily Goal / Focus of Lesson: Choosing and Asking Questions about Menu Items

Lesson Objectives: Materials

Students Will:

Review menu categories

Choose items from a restaurant menu that they'd like

to order

Create and ask yes/no questions about menu items

(examples: Does the hamburger come with tomato?

Can I get the salad without cheese?)

Fast Food menu

(find at the end of this lesson)

Activity Ideas:

Warm Up: Review menu categories 1. Elicit the names of menu categories from ss; ask how to spell. (See yesterday's curriculum for the

specific vocab.) Write the categories of menu items on 6 pieces of flip chart paper.

2. Elicit an example item for each category and invite that student to write the example on the paper

3. Assign partners and give each pair a marker

4. Partners walk around the room and write example items on the flip chart papers

Note: if you give each pair a different color marker, you can see who has mastered the vocabulary and who

needs more practice/help

Objective 1: Read the fast food menu at the end of this lesson Pre-reading: Tell students the name of the restaurant and ask elicit a couple predictions about what they

will see on it. Ss each write a few predictions.

Reading: Pass out the menus and students read to see how many predictions were correct.

Post-reading: Model how to mark the menu with smiley faces next to items that you like; have ss mark the

items they like.

Post-reading: Ordering from the menu with partners

1. Review language for ordering from yesterday; write on the board.

2. Choose 3 items from the menu that you'd like and model how order these items.

3. Ss each choose 3 items that they'd like to order

4. Ss line up in two rows, facing each other and tell the person across from them what they'd like to

order

5. One row moves down so that everyone has new partners; repeat step 4, then repeat again a few

more times.

Objective 2: Asking yes/no questions about menu items Group ball toss:

1. Use an example of something on the menu that you want to change and elicit what you should

say/ask. Try to guide the class to ask a yes/no question about the item.

2. Write these sentence frames on the board:

Does the _____________ have ______________?

Can I get the __________________ without __________________?

Can I get the __________________ with __________________?

1. Elicit a few example questions using the sentence frames.

2. If there is space in the classroom, all the students can stand in circle. If not, they can remain

seated. Model asking a question about the menu using a sentence frame while holding a

6

ball/beanbag.

3. Toss the ball to a student and the student asks a question about a menu item

4. The student tosses the ball to another student, etc.

Practice with a partner:

1. Write clear copies of the sentence frames on the board, if they aren't still up there.

2. Elicit example questions from a couple students; write their sentences on the board.

3. With a partner, ss first brainstorm menu questions orally; then write down a few in their

notebooks. (Students who finish early can write a few questions without using/looking at the

frames.)

4. Invite ss to share their sentences with the group.

Wrap Up:

Do another ball toss; this time students share one of the questions that they wrote.

If time allows, use their sentences in a student-led dictation: each pair reads one of their sentences

for the class. The class listens and writes it in their notebook. Then ss can come up to the board

to write their sentences and correct as a class.

Restaurants: Wednesday, Week 1 of 2 Daily Goal / Focus of Lesson: Dialogs Between a Cashier and Customer

Lesson Objectives: Material

customer and cashier

S's will create variations based on the dialog that they

read

S's will ask yes/no questions about fast food menu

items (review)

Fill in the blanks fast food

restaurant dialog

(find at the end of this lesson)

Activity Ideas:

Warm Up: Brainstorm around the word menu. 1. Write the word MENU on the board and draw a circle around it.

2. Elicit words that the students learned so far this week. (See Monday's curriculum for specific language.)

Draw lines coming out from menu and write a word on each line.

3. Erase the words and invite students to come up to the board and write them again.

Objective 1: Listen, read & practice a dialog between customer & cashier Practice the dialog at the end of this lesson using the following method:

1. Don't pass out the dialog yet. Read the title & dialog out loud while students listen.

2. Read the first sentence aloud again. Ask students for a key (important) word from the sentence.

Write the key word on the board.

3. Repeat step 2 with the next sentence until there is a key word for each sentence on the board.

Write all the key words in order.

4. As a class, ask students to retell the dialog using the key words.

5. Students read the dialog independently.

6. Students practice the dialogue with a partner. Have them practice multiple times; on the last time

challenge them to do it without looking at their papers.

Break (10 min.)

Objective 2: Create variations based on the dialog they read 1. Pass out the fill in the blanks version of the dialog located at the end of this lesson.

2. Model for students how to create a list of possible items to put in the first blank, including how to write

the list on a separate sheet of paper.

3. Elicit a list of possible items to put in the second blank.

4. Students work in groups to create lists of items for the rest of the blanks.

5. Ask each group to share one of their lists.

Note: students will do a role play in tomorrow's lesson.

Objective 3: Write yes/no questions about items they might find on a restaurant menu. 1. Elicit a list of menu items that students like to eat and write them on the board.

2. Elicit the yes/no question frames that they used in class yesterday. See the activity for objective 2 in

yesterday's lesson for suggested questions.

3. Elicit a couple yes/no questions about the menu items that are on the board.

4. Students write yes/no questions about the items on the board using the question frames.

5. Higher level students can try writing questions without referring to the frames.

Wrap Up:

Tell a partner two things you learned today.
