Lund University unites long-standing traditionswith a modern, dynamic and highly international profile. With eight faculties and a number of research centres and specialised institutes, Lund University is the biggest provider of research and higher education in Sweden. It was founded in 1666 and is one of the oldest universities in northern Europe. At present, nearly 46 000 students are enrolled at Lund University.

LUND UNIVers ItY offers a wIDe raNge of Master ’s PrograMMes Around 80 programmes are taught in English, ranging from International Human Rights Law to Sustainable Urban Design. Ranked as one of Europe’s leading institutions of higher education, excellence is required in all areas of activity. To realise this ambition, Lund University works systematically with educational development and the professional development of all teaching staff. The Master’s programmes at Lund University employ a multi- or transdisciplinary approach in an environment of exceptional academic competence and cultural diversity. All education is closely tied to current research and many of the courses are truly unique. International programmes provide excellent opportunities to form a global network of professional colleagues, as well as establishing contacts locally here in Sweden.

LUND UNIVers ItY has eVoLVeD INto the Most INterNat IoNaL UNIVers ItY IN sweDeN The University cooperates worldwide with a great number of universities, university networks and research institutes. Annually some 3 000 international students choose to study in Lund. The University also takes a very active part in the educational and research programmes of the European Union. Six prestigious and research oriented Erasmus Mundus programmes involving Lund University have been approved by the European Commission. Lund University is also involved in the EU-funded programme Erasmus Mundus Action 2. This programme promotes coopera-tion, development and mobility between higher education institu-tions in Europe and a great variety of non-European countries and regions around the world. The non-EU countries covered by the programme are grouped together into regional or national “lots”. Lund University coordinates two lots: JOSYLEEN (Jordan, Syria and Lebanon) and Asia regional (China, India, Pakistan, Bangla-desh and Nepal), and is a partner in three additional lots: South Africa; Iran, Iraq and Yemen; and the Gulf countries. In addition,

Lund University is ranked as one of the top ten universities in Europe with the best mobility figures in terms of incoming and outgoing students and teachers.

where Is LUND? Lund is located in southern Sweden, right next door to Denmark. The Danish-Swedish Øresund Region is one of Europe’s most dynamic areas. In Lund, ‘abroad’ is close by: a trip by train or car to the largest Scandinavian city, Copenhagen, takes less than an hour over the Øresund Bridge, while Malmö, the third largest city in Sweden, is only a 15-minute train ride away.

LUND Is weLL kNowN for I ts DYNaMIc stUDeNt L I fe It also has traditional student societies, organising activities to suit every taste. The dominance of the student population, and the wide range of students’ associations and organisations enrich the cultural climate of both the University and the city.

A thousand years of history and academic excellence have created a dynamic and entrepreneurial spirit which infuses the city. The University lies in the heart of the city: in Lund everything is close at hand, within reach on foot or by bicycle, which adds to its appeal. The city itself is compact and charming, with picturesque old houses, romantic cobbled streets and beautiful green surroundings. Student cafés, nightlife, a vibrant and intellectually stimulating atmosphere, rich culture and a wide assortment of leisure activities all contribute to making your stay a memorable experience.

chrIster thorDsoN DIRECTOR OF LEGAL AFFAIRS IKEA GROUp, SWEDEn Christer Thordson is responsible for managing IKEA business law issues worldwide, but also cooperates with Lund University. Among other things, he is a member of a reference group for entrepreneurship training, including the international Master’s programme in Entrepreneurship at Lund University. “Lund University offers the advantage of a deliberately inter-national, interdisciplinary curriculum, crossing faculty borders. Applicants to the programme in Entrepreneurship come from different academic backgrounds, something that industry sees as an obvious asset”, Christer explains. The students work with actual business projects during the course, where companies contribute with business ideas that they do not have the time to develop themselves. This produces a win-win situation, with natural contacts and a basis for recruitment. “Concerning equal opportunities, IKEA is working hard to recruit staff from different cultures and with a variety of back-grounds; this is an important aspect of our operations.”

Ideon’s enterprises all collaborate with Lund University and have helped to make Lund known worldwide for cutting-edge research and technology.

Carl Fredrik Leanderson sees students on Master’s programmes as one of the company’s most valuable recruitment target groups. “The ability to cope with change and assume tough challenges is an essential quality that international Master’s students possess. They managed to get here, bringing new perspectives with them, and they have stamina. By definition, research is no easy under-taking. You need the capacity to cope with setbacks, learn from them and move on”, says Carl. Ericsson Research in Lund is a cross-disciplinary organisation with specialist employees in a variety of areas relating to mobile communications. “We like putting together multicultural teams. They have proved to be more efficient, functioning with a different kind of dynamic, more open to new approaches and methods. A great advantage coming here is that employees have already acquired their own international network, preferably also including contacts in other fields. Most of the staff at Ericsson Research have quite a wide range of international contacts. Personally, I did part of my PhD work in Norway, the US and France, and have found that experience to be extremely valuable.”

Christalle Gemon completed her first degree in political science and international relations at Long Island University in New York, and came directly to Sweden from Tokyo, where she had been working for four and a half years. “I have a love story with Lund. I have always been interested in international development, and during my studies in New York, I did a UN internship at The World Intellectual Property Organisation, WIPO, in Geneva. That is where I got to hear about the joint degree they had with Lund University.” “The really attractive thing about the programme is that the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, SIDA, sponsors field work in a developing country for four months. Only very few programmes worldwide can offer this. I will do my field work at the World Bank in Nairobi, working with water and sanitation.” Christalle lived in a student hall of residence, loved the architecture in Lund, and made many Swedish friends. She feels that the small size of the town helped her to relax and to focus on her studies. www.lumid.lu.se

• LUND – a C i t y o f s t u d e n t s o C i e t i e sLund is recognised both for its historic past and for recent development and success. Students form a large proportion of Lund’s 110 000 inhabitants, giving the city a youthful multicultural atmosphere. The large student population also contributes to an active cul tural life, with a wide range of activities and entertainment. The heart of student life in Lund is organised around the student societies called “nations”, essentially large clubs offering entertainment and opportunities to socialise.

After completing a Bachelor in Economics at Leeds, Daniel Mc-Cartney had just done an internship in Germany and was looking around, considering where in the world he would take his next step. Lund University is ranked highly by leading ranking stud-ies worldwide, has a good reputation and a clearly international focus; it became his number one choice. “I was welcomed in a very professional manner”, Daniel says. “Accommodation was arranged for me and I was provided with all the information I needed, from the moment I arrived in Sweden. Everybody speaks English, there aren’t too many culture shocks, and it is easy to blend in and become part of student day-to-day life here.” Daniel feels that the easy and casual relationship that exists between students and lecturers is a cultural difference distinguishing Lund from British universities. Respect comes naturally, and is not based on formal conventions. Lund has made a vivid impression on Daniel as a melting-pot for young people from all over the world, where he has already acquired an extensive social network, as well as friends for life. www.ehl.lu.se/masters

“Working for the World Health Organisation (WHO) is a full-time commitment which gives me great pleasure”, says Martin

Cichocki, medical doctor trained in paediatric surgery from Graz who wanted to develop his talents by attending a Master’s programme. Sweden was not unknown to Martin as he started to get interested in public health. “I have always been curious about the Swedish welfare system and differences in various health care systems in general.”Being able to take his Master’s in Public Health at Lund University was a positive experience. At the end of his degree he was able to take on the challenge of an internship at the WHO in the Danish capital, Copenhagen. This is a city full of nuances and with high potential, situated less than an hour from Lund. It was an opportunity Martin definitely did not want to miss. “My focus is on Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia and Turkmenistan. How can we implement hospital care for children in these regions? I work together with local contact people and we use questionnaires to find out the improvements in this process. This will help them and other countries to develop and expand health care strategies for children.”

With a Master’s on Martin’s curriculum vitae, the future lies open and the alternatives alter from day to day. One possible solution, which is very tempting, is to stay in Lund and continue public health research in clinical sciences. “I have received a very pleasant offer from a professor at Lund University. My wife would also be happy if this meant that her globetrotting husband settled down for several years in the same place!” www.mph.med.lu.se

• PUbL Ic heaLth The aim of the programme is to facilitate the development of a scientific attitude and the acquisition of a sound knowledge of the methods for public health work at different levels of the community and for research in the field. The programme provides cross-disciplinary perspectives on the planning, follow-up and evaluation of public health projects and programmes. It provides knowledge of global health and disease patterns, epidemiology and qualitative methods, needs and priority assessment methods, intervention and quality control, as well as the skills needed for the drafting, implementation and follow-up of health policies. Demands for qualified staff in the field of public health have grown in recent years, and a master’s degree in public health or equivalent training is now a requirement from many international organisations.

Vanessa Pieterse has become a Londoner and works as a business analyst at Fujitsi Consulting, a company with specialised expertise in client processes and their customer databases. “It is a fantastic opportunity to work in a big city like London and get some great business experience and business exposure at the same time”, says Vanessa. Vanessa was born and raised close to Sydney in Australia, where she also studied communication with a marketing and business focus. Her favourite subjects were consumer theory and research along with organisational sociology, but she wanted to move on and develop her knowledge of something she found interesting and thus continue to learn. “I actually had previously done an exchange semester at Lund University and I had such a great time then, that when I decided to do a Master’s degree it was the first place I looked at. Lund is also much closer to Europe than other parts of Sweden – which is great when you want to travel.” Vanessa enjoyed her Master’s programme, which contained lots of practical examples as well as various kinds of group work in an inter-national atmosphere. After an interlude in Sydney she ended up in London, at Fujitsu. “The greatest challenges in this job are finding out the most efficient ways to do things. With the systems I work with there are often many different ways of working. I need to find the solutions that are best for the customer at the end of the day. In the future I would like to use all this business experience I am getting as a business consultant/analyst and take it back to strategic marketing, working for a company that I really believe in.” www.ehl.lu.se/masters

Golzar Ahmadi already held a degree in chemical engineering from the Science and Research University in Teheran, Iran, and wanted to work with research projects in the future. There were several reasons why she chose Lund University: “Sweden has a leading position in the environmental sector, but also the language of instruction is English. Besides, our programme is unique, with an interdisciplinary focus and a wide range of disciplines. The students have all sorts of backgrounds – engineers, political science experts, linguists, anthropologists, marine biologists – and come from all over the world.” When Golzar arrived at Lund she rented a room from a private landlord in western Lund. She enjoyed living in Lund, and likes the fact that although the city is small and manageable, it still has so much to offer. www.lumes.lu.se

eCts – the european Credit transfer and accumulation system

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a student-centred system based on the student workload required to achieve the objectives of a programme. The credit system makes study pro-grammes easy to read and compare for all students, local and international. ECTS is based on the principle that 60 credits measure the workload of a full-time student during one academic year: one credit stands for around 25 to 30 working hours.

one- and two-year programmes

Lund University offers both two year programmes (120 ECTS), in accordance with the Bologna system, as well as one year programmes (60 ECTS). The School of Eco-nomics and management, for example, offers several programmes where students decide the length of their studies during the second semester. This flexibility is especially useful for students that get job offers and thus prefer to graduate earlier with an mSc of 60 ECTS. how-ever, this flexible set up also guarantees all students, if they wish, a two-year master’s level education (120 ECTS).

economic demography 2 years (4 semesters)

Economic demography explores the relationship between population and economy in a broad sense; how a population is influenced by eco-nomic development and in what ways population changes affect the economy. The classic dilemma, still relevant in our times, is whether the economic resources will suffice for an ever-increasing population. Other areas of interest are the impact of economic aspects on the long-term decline in mortality and diminishing family size that are linked to the demographic transition. Special interest is also given to studies on the family and the labour market, migration patterns and health and mortality issues. The programme provides training in the theories, methods and skills required to understand demographic dynamics. It focuses on the processes underlying population change, the contexts in which these processes originate and evolve and the consequences of such processes.

a creative and innovative environmentAt Lund University you will experience a unique atmosphere with informal relationships between students and professors, where personal initiative and innovative and critical thinking are not only encouraged but also expected. This academic approach proves to be an asset when graduates later step out into the world of work, having grown both as professionals and individuals.

Career prospectsThere is a demand for demographic studies at all levels of government, as well as in the private sector. marketing, insurance and municipal planning are three areas where demographic skills are in increasing demand. Given the wide scope of the programme and its interdisciplinary nature, graduates can expect employment opportunities within a multitude of areas.

human ecology 2 years (4 semesters)

Drawing on fields such as anthropology, geography, sociology and economic history, the programme provides interdisciplinary perspectives and analytical tools for communicating about problems of sustainability. It represents an important complement to technological and natural science approaches to sustainability by focusing on the cultural dimensions of consumption and resource use, cultural perceptions of environment and economy, and social science perspectives on the global distribution of environmental problems. A central aim is to help students develop skills in communicating across boundaries separating the discourses of different disciplines, cultural traditions, or the interests of business, politics and social movements. The programme encourages critical scrutiny of the debate about sustainability, but also a serious commitment to improving human-environmental relations worldwide. It covers the major social and environmental challenges of our time, including climate change and climate justice, unequal exchange and use of ecological resources, and the shifting of environmental risks and problems to the poorest parts of world society.

This programme is unique in combining perspectives on sustainability from the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. It brings together lecturers and students from various backgrounds in truly interdisciplinary discussions about how culture, power and ecology interact in human-environmental relations. In the third semester, many students are offered work placements with organisations in various parts of the world, giving them the opportunity to apply their insights to practical engagement with sustainability policies. In autumn 2010, several students are enjoying paid work placements with organisations dedicated to improving sustainability in various parts of Latin America. The programme does not shy away from pressing and controversial questions regarding global power structures and inequalities of distribution.

Career prospectsStudents graduating from this programme will be able to work in fields such as research, education, journalism, environmental management and development aid. Regardless of the choice of profession, they will be equipped to help make the world more sustainable by communi-cating their insights to others and by being able to critically assess different options regarding policies, lifestyles and patterns of consumption.

Maritime law 2 years (4 semesters)

The programme is a collaboration between the Faculty of Law and the World maritime University, malmö. In a time when new technology is giving transportation at sea a competitive advantage over other means of transport, and with congestion on the roads in Europe, the seagoing trade is seeing a new dawn. It is therefore important that the legal aspects of maritime activities closely follow this development. The objective of this programme is to train students to meet the demand for lawyers able to understand and assess the growing market, and with a strong knowledge of the regulatory framework to support the sustainable development of global seagoing trade.

On the programme students choose to focus on either public international maritime law or private international maritime law. The aim of the programme is to show how international, regional and domestic sources of law interact and create tensions and legal issues, with consequences for the shipping industry and the environment.

Career prospectsGraduates of this programme will have good opportunities to find employment, for example within the maritime transport industry or the maritime insurance sector.

system-on-Chip 2 years (4 semesters)

System-on-Chip offers a wide perspective, where digital and analogue design are regarded as one unit in which different domains interact. The focus is on CmOS, where billions of devices are used to build a system on a single silicon die. The programme is very popular, with 600–700 applicants a year. One of the reasons for its popularity is the fact that it is a unique programme. It spans areas from radio frequency (RF) circuits to data conversion and digital circuits. It is also unique in the sense that circuit design is linked to the area of wireless communication, where RF front-ends are co-designed with digital baseband, which gives the possibility to build complete transceivers.

Career prospectsAfter completing this programme you will be ready for a career in systems and electronics in many different areas. Designers in this area are very attractive throughout the world. Lund is part of one of the fastest growing regions in Europe, with a large concentration of interesting companies in the field, such as ST-Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, Ericsson Research, Axis and ARm Sweden, with thousands of R&D employees. In the future there will be opportunities in the European Spallation Source (ESS) and mAX Iv, which are to be located in Lund. Graduates from this programme are also very attractive for the job market in Europe, the US and other countries. Furthermore, perhaps the most interesting career option is to continue towards a phD. A large number of former master’s students have chosen to continue as researchers, both in Lund and in other cities around the world.

water resources 2 years (4 semesters)

Safe water and sanitation are fundamental to human development. When people are deprived of these, they face diminished opportunities to realise their potential as human beings. The millennium Development Goals provide a benchmark for measuring progress towards the human right to water. That is why halving the proportion of the world population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation is a key target in its own right. But achieving that target is critical to the attainment of other goals. If you want to make a contribution towards these goals, come and study for a master’s degree in Water Resources in Lund, Sweden.

wireless Communication 2 years (4 semesters)

The master’s programme in Wireless Communication is one of the most popular master’s programmes at Lund University and the most popular wireless communication programme in Sweden. The University has excellent resources in the area of wireless communication, both in terms of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and of lecturers who are often world leading researchers in the field. We are convinced that research and good education go hand in hand. The experience from research naturally influences the quality and content of the courses and vice versa.

The Wireless Communication programme has a focus on the physical and lower layers of wireless communication. The aim is to give in-depth system knowledge, which in turn requires insights into the various components in a wireless system. In the final semester students undertake a large project for their master’s thesis.

Career prospectsThe programme gives a solid grounding for a career in wireless communication, either in industry or in academia. On completion of the programme, students have the skills necessary for both research and development, e.g. understanding and developing future wireless systems, developing wireless networks for special applications and understanding and enhancing existing solutions. It is also a perfect start for further studies as a phD student in the area, as shown by the fact that almost 40 per cent of our students have gone on to do a phD after graduation.

Both Lund University and the surrounding wireless communications industry have an excellent track record in the field of wireless communication. Lund was the birthplace for Bluetooth technology, Ericsson’s mobile handset industry, important technical contributions to GSm/WCDmA/LTE, and numerous other communications solutions that many people use in their daily lives without even thinking about it. ST Ericsson and SonyEricsson mobile Communications, world-leading companies in the area of wireless communication, have major research and development sites in Lund. A number of small and medium-sized companies with activities in the field are also present and many of our students start to work for these companies directly after graduation, or even before, as a number of in-house thesis project positions are usually offered.
