Our researchEducation and research are closely linked at Stockholm University where there is a strong focus on basic research, and two academic areas: Science and Human Science. Fundamental academic values of autonomy, academic freedom, integrity and equity characterize the University’s operations in research and education, as well as in the exercise of authority and administration. In the spirit of the Enlightenment, Stockholm University was founded as a modern institution in the capital city in 1878.

Four Nobel Laureates in Chemistry, and the appointment of Sweden’s first female professor – and the world’s first female professor of Mathematics – in 1889, mark our proud history.

As a student you will meet researchers who are outstanding in their area with access to the most recent scientific findings. Our researchers are leading contributors to the development of scientific research and our society. They also participate as experts in both scientific and public international bodies; most prominently as members of the Nobel Prize committees who select the Nobel Prize winners each year.

Stockholm University is a prominent research university characterized by its independent basic research. All research at the university should strive to be nationally leading and internationally prominent.
