SituationGlobally systemic bank lacked the data security standards to fight off cyber attacks and comply with the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to be enforced in 2018. Data security measures were woefully lacking in their people, process and technology. These gaps were exposed resulting in major headlines, brand damage and potential regulatory penalties. The bank knew they needed help and turned to Mastercard for guidance on how to secure their traditional data systems and their new Big Data environment.

Approach Advisors performed a security assessment of the banks legacy and new Big Data environment using its world class experience in securing data. Mastercard brought its own information technology and security teams to work with the bank to evaluate the Bank’s security practices across people, processes and technology. The assessment focused on six major use cases, such as data stewardship, encryption, etc.

ResultsThe work led to a two-year detailed roadmap addressing the vulnerabilities in people, process and technology to reduce the risk of data breach and potential fines by the government.
