The south entrance of the UDM School of Architecture is rarely used by students due to a more convenient entrance on the same side of the building. The redesigned vestibule intends to attract people to this entrance while giving them a new experience as they enter the school. The existing vestibule is a very tall and dark space. This new threshold provides a more intimate entrance at a human scale while creating a procession from the ground plane to WKHPDLQRRURIWKHEXLOGLQJ

5The process began with an origami cicada. The form of the cicada was explored through ink drawings that led to the design of an origami pod and eventually a human pod. The shelter was constructed out of cardboard in order to achieve a lightweight, portable pod.

6The new design protrudes out from the building as to catch pedestrians walking towards the building. The small scale of this design does not allow for much exterior illumination other than a sliver of light where the ceiling and wall meet. Because of this, the interior becomes a more unique space.

The DCCH Mobile stage is a portable event stage that can easily be assembled and disassembled for easy transportation. Inspired E\WKHVXPPHUPRYHPHQWRI9LYDOGLV)RXU6HDVRQVWKHQVFUHDWHWKHLOOXVLRQRIVKHOWHUIURPVXPPHUVXQUHOHQWLQJKHDWDOORZLQJsunlight to enter between them. Small concerts and ceremonies can make use of the focal point created at center stage representing the abrupt onset of a summer storm.

The initial schemes were inspired by the heat and storms of summer ranging from wind blown reed to unprotected, suspended platforms.

The 3x4 Shelves were an exercise in fabrication and modularity. The frame, built using 1 x 1 welded steel tubing allows for PXOWLSOHFRQJXUDWLRQVDQGVL]HVRIVKHOYHVThe simple materials and design led to an inexpensive and quick build, around twenty hours and one hundred dollars to go from UDZPDWHULDOVWRQLVKHGSURGXFW7ZRVKHOYHVZHUHFUHDWHGLQWKHUVWUXQLQRUGHUto understand the process of larger volume production.

The Canopy functions both as a credit union and a living space. This project was a study of the issues in creating a very public space on one level and a very private space on another. Creating a building that is open and accessible to the residents of Corktown while offering private units for those living in The Canopy. Located in a vacant lot bordered by the Mercury Bar and an existing transmission shop, the building must relate to both while creating a new experience in Corktown. The Canopy maintains a connection from Michigan Ave. to the redesigned Roosevelt Park where pedestrians can move from pavement to grass through the lobby of the credit union. The balconies of each apartment are recessed so residents are able to develop them into usable spaces like gardens, living or work spaces. The upper levels of The Canopy grow like a canopy of trees.

The form of The Canopy mirrors the trees in the redesigned Roosevelt Park to the rear of the building. You are able to pass under The Canopy through the credit union lobby just as you can pass under the canopy of a tree.

Windsor School of 3D Art

The design of the Windsor School deals with interactive and reactive architecture. The IRUPWKHEXLOGLQJWDNHVLVLQUHDFWLRQWRLWVsurrounding environment, celebrating open spaces in neighboring buildings. Light wells exist on both sides of the building marking circulation between structures and spaces. The school provides a seating area for VWXGHQWVXVLQJWKHJURXQGRRUFDIHWHULDLQWKHneighboring school to the north. This area can DOVREHXVHGDVDJURXQGRRUSDVVDJHWRWKHinterior courtyard of the schools. The louvers covering the east and west facades react to the buildings inhabitants and the pedestrians of Windsor moving at three different levels ranging from public to private.

5IF8JOETPSTJUFJTUIFmSTUUIJOHyou see when you exit the Windsor Tunnel and for that reason holds HSFBUTJHOJmDBODFJOUIFDJUZ5IFmaster plan for the area consists of a rectangular block containing classrooms and student housing surrounding a central courtyard. The block was separated into nine plots allowing for nine different schools.

The louvers covering the facade of the Windsor School allows the building to interact with its users and the city. The louvers react on GLIIHUHQWOHYHOV2QWKHJURXQGRRUthe louvers move as pedestrians move past the school. In the second and third level studios, the louvers react to users in the space allowing different levels of light into these areas. On the fourth and most private level, student housing, inhabitants have full control of the louvers.

The Chicago School is an extension of the Windsor campus, located on Wolf Point in downtown Chicago. The ideas about interactions and reactions used in Windsor followed through to Chicago. In Windsor the exterior louvers gave a hint to the activity inside as well as the activity of pedestrians outside. The Chicago school accomplished this same idea through materiality. Translucent materials mark more activity like studio spaces while the wood covering much of the structure represents areas of less activity like classrooms and administrations areas. The separation of spaces and the need for natural light motivates the facets of the facade. An open ground plane similar to that in Windsor connects the street front with the rest of the school. This central bridge is a meeting point for students from the separate studios located at different points on the site. This more dynamic structure contains a computer lab, workshop and large crit space shared by all students.

This site is much larger than the Windsor site. A similar strategy was used to divide the space, splitting it into IRXUQJHUVSHUSHQGLFXODUWRWKH6XQ7LPHVEXLOGLQJbehind, leaving four long and narrow plots for each school to occupy. The studio came up with three rules to go along with the master plan dealing with the street IURQWZDWHUIURQWDQGWKHXVHRISXEOLFVSDFH)LUVWthe street front was to be built up in order to increase SHGHVWULDQWUDIFWRWKLVDUHD6HFRQGYLHZVRIWKHriver from the street above were to be preserved. When you visit a theater you are retreating from reality. The UDM Theater creates a retreat form the campus. This building creates a transition from the traditional campus architecture of UDM to the open metal structure of the theater. The procession from campus to theater takes you from ground level down six feet to the entrance doors. After you enter, you descend another four feet to the theater doors and then move into the auditorium. As you move through the structure, you retreat further into the building. A band of glass runs at ground level surrounding the building so the inhabitants are aware of their decent below grade.

This is a hybrid structure using both steel and bearing wall construction. A space frame spans above the theater and lobby creating a large interior space as well as allowing for a very geometric shape from the exterior. The bearing XBMMTTVSSPVOEUIFBVEJUPSJVNBOETUBHFEFmOJOHUIFTFTQBDFTGSPNUIFSFTUPGthe building. The thick concrete walls serve a sound barrier from the lobby and other noisy functions of the building such as workshops and mechanical rooms. The central air system is split between two mechanical rooms in order to better serve both sides of the building. One fan room serves the south side of the theater as well as the front and rear lobbies. The second serves the north side, auditorium, and stage.

The Vistula Center, located on the banks of the Vistula River in Warsaw, Poland serves as an exhibition space, a learning center and a river sports club. The exhibition space serves as a new home for the many stone artifacts recently IRXQGRQWKHRRURIWKHULYHUIURPWKH6ZHGLVKLQYDVLRQRI3RODQG7KLVLVDOVRa place to show different works and installations from local artists around the city of Warsaw. The river sports club within the center encourages activities such as sailing, kayaking and rowing on the river. The shape of the exhibition space compresses visitors in order to move them along the pathway connecting Port 3UDVNLDQGWKH9LVWXOD5LYHUHQGLQJLQDRDWLQJGRFNXVHGE\WKHERDWLQJFOXEThe Vistula Center not only informs of the past and present connection between the river and the city but also promotes a physical interaction with the Vistula.

The education component of UIF%$$)BDUTBTBOBGUFSTDIPPMBOETVNNFS,NVTJDQSPHSBN4UVEFOUTof this program are able to work side by side with professional musicians, preforming in the 1500 seat concert hall. Shared spaces like practice rooms and lecture halls ensure interaction between musicians and students. The DCCH master plan aims to create a more intimate, walkable entertainment district. The perforated copper skin that surrounds the DCCH creates a connection from exterior to interior. Pedestrians are able to view interior activity through the skin, while people within are able to view the activity of the city. Copper was used in order to mimic the RUDQJHKXHRI'HWURLWVEULFNDQGPRUWDUEXLOGLQJV7KHFRSSHUZLOOweather and patina in a similar way brick does with age.
