Julia was born June 11, 1815 in Calcutta, India. At age 48 she got a camera from her daughter and son in-law as a birthday gift. She enjoyed taking pictures of women who she would have dressed in elaborate costumes, sometimes representing historical figures. Her work continues to interest photography students and students of Victorian England.

Julia used her skills to capture portraits of people, her photos are different than some because she was great at catching emotion on peoples faces and in their body movements. “Julia Margaret Cameron made albumen-silver prints from wet collodion glass plate negatives (Julia Margaret Cameron: Working Methods).”
