Font Name: Sweet As Revenge

I’ve considered this particular font because of its urban style, it immediately reminds the viewer of graffiti, street art, which all connotes a kind of urban environment. Street art relates to the rap genre therefor I thought this font was a very appropriate consideration. This font, though suitable, I thought wasn’t the best way to go; in my opinion it doesn’t capture the more dirty look I was aiming for, I just didn’t find it as appealing as the other fonts I’ve seen.

I thought this font was much better looking than the previous font as it is much more rugged and ‘hard’. This very well represents the type of magazine style I’m creating. I do have some problems with it however; one being that it’s a very flat and wide font, which I imagine will take up a lot of the front cover, even when reshaped to a smaller size the word becomes harder to read. I want my masthead to be bold and stand out. Overall I think that although this is an edgy and great looking font, I don’t think it is suitable at all to be used for my masthead as it looks better for cinematic purposes rather than magazine purposes.

Font Name: All Rights Reserved

What I like most about this font is how all the letters are presented in block capitals in bold white; the black background contrasts with this to give the masthead more definition. I especially like the shaky effect and how it makes the masthead look more ‘dangerous’ and gangster though I question its actual usability. I feel this font was still lacking a certain quality that makes it a masthead; I believe it would be more suitable as a cover line. Overall, as I mentioned, this font would be better suited as a cover line for my front cover; I think it is too shaky and messy to be used as a logo but I do like the effect, this does not mean that I don’t think of it as impractical.

I thought this was the best looking font above all of the considerations; it’s bold, it’s easy to read, it is unique and it stands out. I personally also thought this font best represented the name of my magazine as it is rugged and has the kind of ‘hard’ appearance I was looking for. Overall, despite my attraction to this font I felt it was still too different compared to the VIBE and XXL masthead; the font style is completely different as it connotes a kind of western / cowboy theme as compared to my rap/hip hop genre.

Font Name: Futurist Fixed-Width

The denotation of this font style is slim, sleek and clear, this connotes professionalism and wealth. This font was considered because of its basic style; it makes the masthead stand out, it’s easy to read and it’s bold. The simple design means that it doesn’t distract the reader from the main focus of the front cover, the headline and main image for example; this however doesn’t mean that it is too basic to be unrecognisable as an iconic logo. The overall look is sleek which gives the magazine a professional finish.

The denotation of this font style is that it is bold, clear and bulky. It is similar to my magazine of inspiration, VIBE, as their masthead is also very bold. The connotation of this is that my magazine will be proud to represent the NOTORIOUS brand name and potential readers will be attracted to the large masthead, persuading them to read it. A benefit of this font style above all others is that it replicates the hip-hop and rap genre magazines very accurately as I felt the previous fonts were out of theme. The overall thick appearance will compliment my magazine, front cover especially, therefore this font will be my final masthead font style.
