Shape RecognitionLet’s start off real basic! Can you name these geometric shapes? Go ahead and label them!

Properties of Basic ShapesNow let’s quickly go over some properties of basic shapes. . .

SHAPE SIDES ANGLES Degrees Classifications

Triangle 3 3 180⁰ Polygon

Square 4 4 360⁰ Quadrilateral

Diamond 4 4 360⁰ Quadrilateral

Trapezoid 4 5 360⁰ Quadrilateral

Parallelogram 4 4 360⁰ Quadrilateral

Pentagon 5 5 540⁰ Polygon

Hexagon 6 6 720⁰ Polygon

Circle 0 0 360⁰

Sides

Scalene = no equal sides

Isosceles= two equal sides

Equilateral= three equal sides

Angles

Right Angle = containing an angle of 90⁰

Obtuse Angle= containing an angle > 90⁰

Acute= containing an angle < 90⁰

Triangles can be distinguished by their _____ and their ______sides angles

Triangles

All six of these characteristics can be combined. . . (see the next slide)

Classifying Triangles

Since triangles are distinguished between their sides and angles we can also categorize them by their sides and angles.

Can you place these triangles accordingly in the diagram?

QuadrilateralsQ: Does anyone know what a quadrilateral is?

D: A quadrilateral is a four sided figure.

Q: Can you think of a geometric shape that would fit this description?

These are just some examples.

Classifying QuadrilateralsQuadrilaterals can best be classified by their ____________. The Venn Diagram

below demonstrates how the quadrilaterals can be classified accordingly.

Regular PolygonsQ: Does anyone know what a regular polygon is?

D: A regular polygon is a polygon where all the sides are the same and all the interior angles are the same.

Q: Can you think of a geometric shape that would fit this description?

3-sided regular polygon

5-sided regular polygon

Line SymmetryQ: Does anyone know what line symmetry is?

D. Line symmetry is when one half of an image is the mirror image of the other half

This is an example of a pentagon having line symmetry

Sometimes shapes/figures can have more than one line of symmetry.

See if you can figure out anymore lines on symmetry

between either the pentagon or the hexagon

Rotational Symmetry

Review: Rotational Symmetry By: ∙ Webquest

Q: Does anyone know what rotational symmetry is?

D. Rotational symmetry is when there is a center point around which the object is turned a certain number of degrees and the object still looks the same. That is it

matched itself a number of times while it is being rotated. (Webquest)

Geometry in the Every DayGeometric shapes can be found everywhere. Here are some examples of geometric

shapes in the nature

Lines symmetry can also be found everywhere. Here are some examples of geometric shapes in the nature
