Match backgroundFC Barcelona welcome AC Milan to the Camp Nou hoping that their home form will see them through to thequarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

• Barcelona have not lost a European tie at the Camp Nou for more than three years and beat Milan in last season'squarter-finals and in the 2005/06 semi-finals. This time, however, the Italian side travel to Spain defending a 2-0 leadafter first-leg goals from Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari at San Siro.

• Teams have recovered from losing the first leg to go through in 28 UEFA Champions League ties, although in onlyfour did the victorious side overturn a deficit of more than one goal. No side has ever salvaged a two-goal first-legdefeat without the benefit of an away goal.

• Milan themselves hold the unenviable record for the biggest first-leg victory overturned in the UEFA ChampionsLeague era, losing 4-0 at RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals having won 4-1 at home.

• Barcelona then won 3-2 in Milan on 23 November to consign their hosts to second place in their group. Xavi Hernándezhit a 63rd-minute winner after Zlatan Ibrahimović and Boateng had cancelled out Mark van Bommel's own goal andMessi's penalty respectively.

• Frank Rijkaard's Barcelona were 1-0 aggregate winners against Carlo Ancelotti's Milan in the 2005/06 semi-finalsen route to winning the second of their four European Cup titles. Substitute Ambrosini played for the Rossoneriwith Valdés, Puyol, Xavi and substitute Iniesta lining up for the Spanish side. Ambrosini is also a survivor of Milan'sonly win at the Camp Nou, 2-0 on 26 September 2000, with Francesco Coco and Oliver Bierhoff scoring.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 28 occasions, including SL Benfica, APOEL FC, FCBayern München and Chelsea FC in 2011/12. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a sideprogressed after a home first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finalswhen they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home.

• Twenty-one ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 21 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three roundof 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC.

• Thirteen ties have gone to penalties, including six finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2012. The first two-leggedtie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, mostrecently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16.

• FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugalin the 2008/09 round of 16, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two gamesalso featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2011/12 round of 16 is the largest margin ofvictory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times.

• Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) andJosé Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs.

• Chelsea FC have become the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFAChampions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 thatfeatured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holdersand lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.

• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last clubto win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996,1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.

• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final inMunich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 monthslater Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know?
