JEFF MOSTYNI would also like to thank everyone associated with the club, especially you our supporters for all the messages of support I have received since the announcement was made, it has meant a great deal to me.

I have to say that developments happened so quickly and so unexpectedly that the reality is only just beginning to sink in.

The most common question I have been asked during the past week is, “what impact will the change of ownership have on the club?”. Having known Maxim and his ambition for some time, the answer is simple. The club could not be in safer hands.

Maxim and the board all share the same ambition to take the club forward and continue its current momentum. I know this ethos is also shared by both Eddie and Jason as they continue to build and develop the playing squad.

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the directors, staff, players and supporters from our visitors this afternoon, Blackburn Rovers.Our visitors today are steeped in history being one of only three clubs that were founder members of both the Football League 1888, and the Premier League in 1992. It is occasions such as this, that make us all realise what an amazing league the Championship is.

Today’s notes are my first since being elected chairman of the club last week. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the club’s owner Maxim Demin, Neill Blake, and the entire board of directors for the incredible amount of faith they have shown in me as a consequence of the appointment.

It is nearly seven years to the day that I first walked through the doors of the club. Far from suffering from the ‘seven year itch’ my love affair with this great football club grows stronger by the day. I am extremely proud to be your chairman.

Good luck to the lads today. Let’s hear plenty of noise.

FROM THE BOARDROOM

Last week we were really pleased with both the performance and result at Middlesbrough. We made a fantastic start before they came back into the game. Having gone 3-2 down in the second half I thought we showed real character and resilience to end up with a draw, and it’s definitely a point gained against a promotion contender.

We play some really big clubs in the next few weeks, today being one of those occasions, so the players can certainly take confidence from the Middlesbrough match. We are missing a number of key players at the moment so it’s even more pleasing to

pick up points, and shows the strength we have in our squad. Every injury creates an opportunity for someone else.

The players have also shown great flexibility in the last few matches, where we have played different formations and made changes mid-match too.

When you look at the calibre of club’s we’re facing each week, it’s quite amazing to think it wasn’t so long ago we were fighting to stay in the Football League, with a transfer embargo and weekly struggle to pay the players’ wages.

So many people have played their part in the amazing

transformation here, and I’m delighted that one of them, Jeff Mostyn, has agreed to become chairman again. Jeff has always given myself, Jason and the players great support, and together with Maxim and his team, the club couldn’t be in better hands.

Our challenge is to match the ambition off the pitch with continuous improvement on it. That’s what everyone here wants and deserves, and that’s what we’ll keep working hard to achieve with your support.

THE SKIPPERGood afternoon and welcome back to the Goldsands Stadium for the visit of Blackburn Rovers, which is once again another fixture that our club could have only dreamed of being part of just a few seasons ago.

The last two games have seen us take four points which is another very respectable achievement.

After the disappointment of the defeat to Blackpool, it was great to respond so positively and to take three points against Barnsley. It was really important to ensure we returned to winning ways at home, as well as getting a clean sheet and it was great to also see Pughy back on the score-sheet with a fantastic finish.

We then finished a hectic week of three fixtures with the trip to Middlesbrough,

and what a fascinating game it was. A roller coaster of emotions, it was full of ups and downs

for the whole 90 minutes, but looking back we can take great pride in the result and the way we played.

I felt we really did take Middlesbrough by surprise with how well we started the game and although we were 2-0 up through two early penalties, it was very much deserved.

Saturday also saw us play a new formation, which was another factor in the good start, and if we can improve our understanding of it then it will be a really useful weapon and another string to our bow.

In saying all of this, the thing that still remains as strong as ever, and that was the most impressive thing about Saturday, was the togetherness and character of our squad. The response we showed to going behind was second to none, and we never gave up until the final whistle, eventually getting our just rewards in the form of the equaliser. The substitutes who were introduced late on also made a real impact, and this goes to show how important and strong the whole squad is at the moment.

I would also like to extend thanks to the 340 travelling supporters, who sacrificed a lot to go and were amazing throughout, for making the effort to come to our longest away trip of the season. I am sure that they would have gone home happy with the point and the performance.

Today will be another huge task. Blackburn are a club steeped in history with a massive reputation and some big names, and they are expected to do well this season, so once again we are going to have to be right at the races and need our twelfth man in you supporters behind us.

HOWE’S PENALTY KNOCKS OUT ROVERS

One of the most memorable moments of Eddie Howe’s playing career came against this afternoon’s opponents. The Cherries visited Ewood Park for a League Cup tie in September 2004 and pulled off a shock as they knocked out the Premier League side. Goals from Garreth O’Connor and Karl Broadhurst took the game into extra-time, but, in the end, the match was decided on penalties. After 16 rounds of spot kicks, Howe stepped up to book the Cherries’ place in the next round.

MIXED FORTUNES SO FARBlackburn head into today’s fixture at the Goldsands Stadium in 14th place following an eventful first few months of the new season. Rovers’ campaign started with a draw at Derby before they ended August with back-to-back wins over Barnsley and Bolton. A defeat and two draws followed, including a stalemate last weekend against Huddersfield. “The air of disappointment around the place shows how far we’ve come so quickly with this young team,” manager Gary Bowyer said after the game.

SAVAGE TIPS OLD CLUB FOR SUCCESS

Blackburn are one of the favourites for promotion to the Premier League this season, according to former midfielder Robbie Savage. “For me, the squad Gary Bowyer has got is good enough to have a chance

of promotion and they should be up and about those play-offs,” the BBC pundit said at the start of the season. “There’s no question for me

that I think he can do that. But to do that they will have to continue to improve.”

02TODD KANERovers boss Bowyer wasted little time in securing the services of the young full back for a third time, signing him on a season-long loan from Chelsea. Bowyer had previously brought Kane to the club during his spell as caretaker back in January, with the young defender impressing during his month at Ewood Park. He suffered an injury two-months into his stay, which forced the club’s hand as he returned to Stamford Bridge. He was the model of consistency in his second spell.

16SCOTT DANNDann proved himself in the top flight with Birmingham City, forming an impressive central defensive partnership with Roger Johnson in the Blues defence until a hamstring injury curtailed his campaign in 2010/11. That summer Rovers signed the central defender, with Dann putting pen-to-paper on a four-year-deal. A near ever-present at the heart of the Rovers defence for the last two years, the former England under-21 international was handed the captain’s armband during the second half of the 2012/13 season.

05GRANT HANLEYThe commanding centre half came through the ranks at Ewood Park, from the Rovers academy to become a first team regular. After making his league debut at the end of the 2009/10 season, Hanley developed into one of the mainstays in defence. Strong displays for Rovers mean the defender has also earned recognition at international level with Scotland.

03TOMMY SPURRHighly-rated defender Spurr was added to the squad ahead of the first day of the season and has made an instant impact. The full-back arrived at Ewood Park on a free transfer from Doncaster Rovers, where he impressed with some consistent performances. The defender played in all of Doncaster’s games in an outstanding 2012/13 campaign, as they clinched promotion to the Championship in dramatic fashion on the final day. He has featured in every Championship game so far this season.

12BEN MARSHALLAfter failing to feature for Leicester in their first six matches of the new campaign, Bowyer moved swiftly to secure the midfielder’s services for an undisclosed fee. Salford-born, Marshall started out at Manchester United as a schoolboy before moving on to Crewe Alexandra where he worked under Rovers’ assistant manager Terry McPhillips and played in the same youth team as current team-mate Hanley. Last season was one of real progress for him as he was a regular for the Foxes and became an England under-21 international.

34JAKE KEANKean made his Rovers debut on the final day of the 2011/12 season against Chelsea, putting in an impressive display at Stamford Bridge. The following season saw him promoted to second choice and after an injury to Paul Robinson, he grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Kean has started the new campaign between the posts in the England goalkeeper’s absence following a long-term injury. Good handling and reflexes mean he is highly rated at Ewood Park.

06JASON LOWEThe versatile performer has been with the club since the age of 12, with Lowe progressing to become a regular member of the Rovers starting line-up. Since making his debut in January 2011, Lowe’s consistent displays in midfield and defence have not only ensured a place in the Rovers team, but also seen him gain international recognition with the Three Lions. In the summer of 2011, Lowe captained England’s under-20s at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Colombia before moving up to be a regular for the England under-21 team.

29CORRY EVANSThe versatile midfielder started his career with Manchester United before joining Hull City on loan in January 2011. Evans played 18 times for the Tigers in the second half of the 2010/11 season, making the loan deal a permanent one the following summer. Evans was a regular in Steve Bruce’s side, making 32 appearances as Hull gained promotion back to the Premier League last term. On the international stage Evans has appeared regularly for Northern Ireland, with 18 caps and one goal to his name.

07JOSH KINGKing joined Rovers initially on loan from Manchester United and his impressive displays meant it was quickly converted into a permanent deal. Oslo-born, the attacker started his footballing career with Valerenga before being scouted and signed by the Premier League champions. He quickly progressed through the United academy and then onto their reserve-team before securing a loan move to Preston North End in 2010. The following year was spent gaining experience with Bundesliga side Borussia Moenchengladbach, while last year the striker was on loan at Hull City.

45TOM CAIRNEY The 22-year-old joined the club on a six-month loan deal in the summer, which runs until January. Cairney made 14 appearances for Hull last season as they were promoted to the Premier League. The Scotland under-21 international joined the Tigers as a 16-year-old from Leeds in 2007 and was named the club’s young player of the year the following season. A technically gifted player, Cairney has won six caps for his country’s under-21 side.

11JORDAN RHODESThe Scotland international made the move across the Pennines last summer in a record £8m deal from Huddersfield, putting pen-to-paper on a five-year deal. Widely regarded as one of the brightest talents outside the top flight, Rhodes was the top scorer in England two seasons ago, with 36 league goals. Following his move to Ewood Park, Rhodes had a standout first season at the club, scoring 28 goals and was voted as player of the year.

What have you made of the Cherries’ start to the season? They have done really well. They have a certain way of playing, which has worked well for them so far, and they play that all the way through the match. It shows how much self-belief they have and how tight they are as a group.

What kind of game are you expecting at the Goldsands Stadium? I think it will be a tough game for us. Obviously, Bournemouth are ahead of us in the league and it won’t be an easy place for us to go, with it being such a long way away. We know we are in for a game and I think it will be a good spectacle.

What has Rovers’ away form been like in the first few weeks of the new campaign? We haven’t got our first away win of the season yet, but hopefully that will come sooner rather than later. If we can replicate some of our performances at home on the road, then that will be great and I don’t think we will have to wait for much longer.

What are your first impressions of Gary Bowyer? I’ve been really impressed. All the players work really hard for him and he’s got a good backroom staff behind him. The fans appreciate what he has done and the type of football he is trying to get us playing.

How are the squad gelling with so many new arrivals in the summer? That’s something we are still working on and it will take a bit of time. It’s not easy and that’s what happens when you bring a lot of new players in, but most of the new lads

Expert’s OpinionLancashire Telegraph reporter Paul Wheelock believes Blackburn will go for their first away win of the season when they visit the south coast this afternoon.

Covering Blackburn must have been a hectic job over the last few years. Does the club feel more settled now? I’ve only started reporting on Rovers in the last month and since I’ve been here it has been a fairly stable time for the club. Recently they announced a loss of £27m, which is evidence of the turmoil that went on last season. But Gary Bowyer is building a young team and you can see there is a plan there.

Have there been many behind the scenes changes at the club since the end of last season and Gary Bowyer was appointed as manager? There have been a lot of changes in terms of the coaching and playing side of the club. Some of the bigger name players, who were on the higher wages, have moved on and been replaced by younger players. The manager has brought in a lot of players and there has been a change of policy.

What are the club’s expectations for the season? Is promotion a realistic possibility?

First and foremost, I think it’s just to try and stabilise themselves in the division. But given the fact that they have got quality in the squad and experienced players still to come back from injury, I think they could push for the play-offs.

What are the strengths of this Rovers team? Jordan Rhodes is as good as any goal scorer, if not the best, in the Championship. They kept their first clean sheet of the season last weekend and they have two good centre backs in Scott Dann and Grant Hanley. If they can keep their partnership going, then Rhodes will always score the goals.

There are some creative midfielders in the squad in Ruben Rochina and David Dunn, who are out injured at the moment. But Tom Cairney has come in on loan from Hull City and done well, so when everyone is fit, there’s a lot of strength in depth.

How happy are supporters with the club’s business in the transfer window?

They did manage to strengthen in most areas, but Gary Bowyer has gone on record to say that he would like another striker. DJ Campbell is out and Leon Best is coming back from a long term injury, so it has left Jordan Rhodes to score the goals.

What has Rovers’ away form been like in the first few months of the season? They are still searching for the first away win and that has probably let them down a little bit. They could have easily won the game at Derby and they showed a lot of character to come back and get a point against Burnley. They haven’t had the rub of the green, but it’s definitely something they need to put right soon.

Would a point be a good result for Rovers this afternoon? Given the way Bournemouth have started the season, I don’t think Rovers would be too disappointed if they came away with a point. But on the back of the draw with Huddersfield at home last weekend, I think they will be going for three points.

Richard Hughes explains why he opted to take the train over a plane for last weekend’s fixture at Middlesbrough.

I remember watching the draw for the UEFA Cup group stage while I was at Portsmouth and praying that we would be able to look forward to games against AC Milan, Valencia or Paris St Germain.

But that wasn’t just because I wanted to test myself against some of the best players on the continent. I was, and still am, a nervous flyer and couldn’t bear the thought of a couple of long journeys to Eastern Europe.

In the end, we were placed in a group with Milan, Heerenveen, Braga and Wolfsburg, with the prospect of trips to Portugal and Germany.

By this time, I had stopped flying domestically but there was no way round it when it came to playing in Europe. I just had to grin and bear it.

The last away game of the group stage was played in Wolfsburg and, as usual, I flew out to northern Germany with the rest of the squad. But I didn’t make the return journey with my team-mates.

into the cabin. This was around the time my anxiety was at its worst and I was straight out of my seat, demanding to be let off the plane. It turned out there was a problem with the engine and we would have to spend the night in Hannover.

It got to the point where I would be on the pitch, thinking about the flight home while the game was going on.

THAT’S WHEN I KNEW THINGS HAD TO CHANGE.”The next day we returned to the airport and were told we were to fly back on a different plane, which turned out not to be true. There was no way I was getting on board.

Instead, I hired a car and drove to Brussels with Jermain Defoe, who also didn’t enjoy flying, and the club’s press officer to catch the Eurostar back to London. That was the last time I ever flew for a game.

These days, with the permission of the manager, I take the train if the rest of the squad fly for one of the longer away trips as I did last weekend when we travelled to Middlesbrough.

I’m certainly much happier with my feet on the ground and, hopefully, that translates into good performances and maximum concentration on the pitch.

Drawing comparisons with world footballing great Zinedine Zidane during his time at Swansea, as well as becoming the most capped Welsh under-21 player, MacDonald has crammed a lot into his professional career so far.

Joining the Swans’ centre of excellence aged just eight, the midfielder progressed through the ranks to emerge as one of Wales’ most promising youngsters before signing for the Cherries just over two years ago.

Having an equally impressive impact on his arrival on the south coast, his season was cut short last year due to an injury sustained in December, leaving it hard for him to break into a team securing promotion in emphatic style.

“I was frustrated at the end of last season when I came back from injury and I put a lot of pressure on myself to get back into the team - maybe too much and I tried too hard,” he explains.

“I am probably my worst critic; I always put pressure on myself. I always try and have standards and when I drop below them I’m disappointed in myself.

“I knew it was a good time for me to go away and spend some time with the family and relax, and in my head I needed to come back and work really hard from day one - and that’s what I did.

“I don’t think I have missed a training session so far this season which is a good thing. You can always take some confidence when you go on a good run of games which I have.

“I’m learning every day in training and with every game I play. My main aim is to try and be consistent. The last five or six games I think I’ve done well but against Barnsley I don’t think I was at my best.

“I don’t take anything for granted, I know how quickly things can change

“I sat down with my girlfriend and my family, and we decided that the best thing for me and my career was to leave Swansea and go elsewhere and try and play as much football as I could.

“I have had that since I have come here and I’ve appreciated all the games that I’ve had, but obviously I’ve got to keep working hard and getting as many minutes as I can.

“I remember the first day I looked around the place. It was a club always on the rise from the start.

Born and raised in Blaenymaes in Swansea, MacDonald broke into his home-town’s first team in 2005 at the same time as he was making a name for himself on the international scene.

However as MacDonald grew into his stride, so did Swansea as they catapulted through the tiers of English football.

“It wasn’t a decision I made over night, I had a lot of time to think about it,” he says, describing his move to Dorset.

“Meeting the manager at the time Lee Bradbury, he seemed a really good guy and I liked the club and the way they wanted to go forward in the future.

“I knew whatever move I had to make was going to be a backwards step to take another step forwards and luckily enough that’s been the case.

“I’ve been playing football and we have been successful at the same time so looking back it was an important move for me and probably one of the best decisions so far in my career.”

a stunning goal against Hereford on his debut.

And although it is a very different club now to the one he arrived at just over two years ago, the 25-year-old believes he has grown alongside it.

“I was always taught with the style Bournemouth play and it was really important for me to come and play the right type of football.

“You look at Swansea and they’ve climbed the leagues and not changed the way they’ve played really, so it goes to show that if you continue with it you can get your rewards.

“I was compared to Zidane and I remember when I first heard it, I was like ‘you can’t be serious!’. He was the best player in the world and I am nowhere near him, but it has stuck and I’m not sure why really.

“My style has changed a lot since I was at Swansea. I have always seen myself as quite a fit lad and being a fit lad I see myself as a box to box midfielder - even now I still have to put in a lot of work even though I’m more of a defensive midfielder.

“Instead of running up and down I am probably going more sideways and helping the lads in defence.

“My game has changed and I don’t look at it as a negative, I enjoy it and look

it as another style that I am learning how to play and I’m sure in the future that will help my all round game.

“As long as we can keep putting in good performances I’m happy to help and keep doing the job I’m doing. I will do anything for the team really.”

Signing a long term contract at the end of last year, the midfielder says he believes the future is bright both personally and for the club.

“The club has gone through some tough times. Before I came here and even when I came here we only had a small squad, but we were close knit and we knew we had to work for each other to grind out results.

“Obviously things have changed but it will be a good thing for us to have financial backing and it’s great that we have Jeff (Mostyn) as chairman because he is a great character and everyone around the club respects him a lot.

“Everything has worked out well. The place itself is a lovely place to live which obviously was an important thing when I came down for a look around. It was a feel of home from home.

“We did have a difficult start to last season and after 10, 11 games we were right down in the relegation places and I remember fans coming up to me saying they’d be happy finishing mid-table.

“Looking back at the run we put together when the gaffer and Jason came back, I think we surprised a lot of teams in the league. As a group I think we always knew we had the ability in the squad to do something special. Luckily enough that’s what we did.

“I think the club are definitely going in the right direction, not just financially but with the people who we have here - from the chairman and Maxim Demin to the gaffer, who has obviously proved that coming back was definitely the right decision.

“We are in a good position at the moment, I don’t think too many people would have expected us to be where we are but as I keep saying never take things for granted, anything can happen.

“We need to keep our feet on the ground and keep working hard for each other.”

I was sitting in a cafe lounge in Southbourne during the summer with a couple of AFC Bournemouth fans and we were pondering the season ahead for the Cherries. In looking at what difficult games would be coming up, we hurriedly devised a list of all the teams in the Championship, only to find that we were missing one club. We could not think which team we could have possibly left off, but even when we double-checked we only had 23 teams in front of us. The internet was not working, so there was no way to cheat. It wasn’t until later that night that I worked out it was today’s opponents, Blackburn Rovers, that were missing from our list.

After all the headlines that Blackburn have generated in the past few seasons it seems strange that we should have forgotten this northern footballing giant. But perhaps that was the problem. Most of us still think of them as a Premiership team and yet they are now in their second season in the Championship. Last season’s disappointing showing was not helped by no less than four different managers taking charge at Ewood Park in the space of seven months: Steve Kean, Henning Berg, Michael Appleton and the current incumbent Gary Bowyer. Blackburn are a big club that have a great history and should be a contender for promotion, but they surely need some stability if they are to achieve the success that the club has enjoyed in the past.

When I think of Blackburn Rovers, what immediately comes to mind is their famous blue and white shirts, Jack Walker, the Venky’s, Robbie Savage and Alan Shearer. It’s clearly not enough to make them jump out at me as a Championship club. So what else should we know about Blackburn Rovers?

The club is one of the oldest in the country, having been formed in 1875 and was a founder of the football league in 1888. Having won the FA Cup three years in a row, they have permission to have their crest on each of their corner flags. Okay, it was between 1884-86, but Bolton Wanderers are the only other club that have achieved this.

And what of the current crop of star players at the club? You have to start with Jordan Rhodes, who is undoubtedly one of the Championship’s top strikers and is the club’s equal biggest ever signing at £8 million. In the 2012-13 season he made 45 appearances for Blackburn and racked up an amazing 27 goals. At the other end of the pitch is Paul Robinson, who, with 41 international caps, is one of the most experienced players in the division.

For me, however, David Dunn is the player that embodies the fighting spirit and never

say die attitude of Rovers. His Premiership quality is a big help to them in this league, even if he is now 33. He still likes to score great goals as well – just ask Bolton after their latest encounter.

It is a great privilege for AFC Bournemouth fans to see teams like Blackburn Rovers coming to Dean Court and I hope we can all get behind our boys today. We are in this together. UTCIAD!

The next visitors to the Goldsands Stadium will be Millwall, who arrive in a week’s time on Saturday 5th October for their first trip to Bournemouth since March 2008, when Max Gradel scored both goals in a 2-0 win for the Cherries. The Lions began the season by taking only two points from their first six league games, but have since recorded back-to-back wins over Blackpool and Charlton. Manager Steve Lomas has recently allowed young forward John Marquis to join Portsmouth on a month’s loan, and has lost defender Mark Beevers for six weeks with knee ligament damage, but has no fewer than six ex-Bournemouth players in his current squad – David Forde, Andy Marshall, Scott Malone, Liam Feeney, James Henry and Scott McDonald.

FOXES MAKE DOUBLE SIGNING

Leicester, one of the early Championship front-runners, have added two players to their squad – both were free agents

so are able to move outside the transfer window. Poland defender Marcin Wasilewski, 33, has joined the Foxes on a one-year contract after spending four years in Belgium with Anderlecht. At the other end of the field, 32-year-old striker Gary Taylor-Fletcher has made Leicester the latest stop in a long career which has included spells with Northwich, Hull, Leyton Orient, Grays, Dagenham & Redbridge, Lincoln, Huddersfield and Blackpool, where he ended a six-year stay in the summer. Taylor-Fletcher has also signed a one-year deal, and made his debut as a substitute against his old side Blackpool last weekend.

RED DEVILS DUO MOVE TO CHAMPIONSHIP

Birmingham and Doncaster have both raided Manchester United’s reserve ranks to make loan signings. The Blues have recruited England Under-21 midfielder Jesse Lingard, 20, on a month’s loan, after he enjoyed a similar one-month spell with Leicester last season – and he enjoyed a spectacular debut for Birmingham, scoring all four goals in a 4-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday. Lingard is yet to play a competitive match for United, unlike Italian striker Federico Macheda, who has

joined Doncaster for a month in what Rovers manager Paul Dickov has described as “a massive coup”. Macheda made his Doncaster debut in a 2-1 defeat at Watford, but on his first start for his new club, he scored both goals in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest.

DOBBIE BACK WITH SEASIDERS

Early Championship leaders Blackpool were knocked off top spot after their recent 3-1 defeat at Millwall. Making his third Blackpool “debut” in that game was Crystal Palace striker Stephen Dobbie, who has arrived on a three-month loan. The 30-year-old was twice loaned to the Seasiders by Swansea, in 2010 and 2012, and joined Palace in the summer after a successful loan move from Brighton. However, he has only made one Premier League appearance for Palace this season, along with one outing in the Capital One Cup. Meanwhile, Blackpool manager Paul Ince has been charged with three breaches of discipline by the FA following the Seasiders’ game here at the Goldsands Stadium a fortnight ago, while his assistant Alex Rae has been charged with an alleged use of threatening behaviour towards a match official at the same game.

Watford have signed Chelsea midfielder Josh McEachran, 20, on loan until January, with the option of extending the deal for the rest of the season. The England Under-21 international spent the whole of 2012-13 in the Championship with a season-long

loan at Middlesbrough. Meanwhile, another England Under-21 midfielder who spent last season on loan at Watford, Nathaniel Chalobah, will not be returning to Vicarage Road but is back in the Championship after joining Nottingham Forest on loan until January. The 18-year-old, who signed a new five-year contract at Stamford Bridge in August, helped the Hornets to last season’s play-off final.

BAIRD JOINS READING AS KARACAN RULED OUT

Reading have signed Northern Ireland defender Chris Baird, who has been without a club since being released by Fulham in July. The ex-Southampton man, 31, has signed a contract running until January, and made his debut in last Saturday’s 3-1 win at Derby. However, the Royals have been dealt a blow after midfielder Jem Karacan, who had a loan spell here at Bournemouth in 2007, was stretchered off with a serious knee injury in their recent 1-0 win over Leeds. Boss Nigel Adkins said: “It looks like he will be out for a long time.”

LEGZDINS RULED OUT FOR RAMS

Derby are set to be without goalkeeper Adam Legzdins until mid-November as he needs to have surgery after rupturing ankle ligaments in training. Rams manager Nigel Clough said: “He has had a small operation and will probably be out for about eight weeks.” The 26-year-old began his career at Birmingham and has also played for Crewe and Burton, while having loan spells at Halifax, Oldham, Macclesfield and Weymouth. He was first-choice keeper at Pride Park for much of last season, but was made available for transfer following the summer signing of Lee Grant.

AFC Bournemouth’s youth team continued their impressive start to the season with a 3-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle last weekend.

Kieran Roberts bagged a hat-trick at Fawcett’s Field to sink the Pilgrims and fire the Cherries into third place in the Football League Youth Alliance South West table.

Roberts put the home side ahead after 13 minutes with a well worked team goal, before doubling the lead from the spot after Joe Quigley was hauled down in the box.

The youngster claimed the match ball when he tapped in Quigley’s parried shot, taking his current tally to six in three games.

“I am delighted for Kieran,” said head of youth Shaun

Brooks. “He’s usually the last one off the training ground and he’s getting just rewards for the time he spends working on his finishing.

“Although the result was terrific I didn’t think it was one of our better performances. We defended excellently at times but we are not controlling games as much as we would like.

“The clean sheet pleased us, and our organisation in our own box and whilst defending set pieces was great, but, in terms of overall possession, we still feel we are a long way from where we want to be.

“The games are coming thick and fast now, but in an ideal world all the boys would come out of this year with 30 to 35 games under their belt to give them the best opportunity to progress.”

ACADEMY IN FRESH SCOUT SEARCHAFC Bournemouth is looking for new academy scouts to help the club find the next Sam Matthews.

The academy is now taking applications from supporters who can spare time at weekends to watch local junior games and help the Cherries maintain their tradition of bringing through homegrown players.

The club mentored 13 scouts in the last year and is now looking to expand in the north and west Dorset area, with scouts required for under-13 and 15 age groups.

Applicants will be invited for an interview at the Goldsands Stadium and if successful,

they will receive training and constant support from experienced coaches.

Applications should be sent to technical development officer Matty Holmes at [email protected].

“This is a great opportunity for supporters who love the club and want to help boys on their way to becoming first team players,” Holmes told Matchday.

“I saw Sam Matthews playing for Broadstone as a ten-year-old and we could see his talent straight away.

“He trained with one of the development centres before going into the academy and we saw a real improvement in him.

“It was a wonderful feeling to sit in the stands in pre-season and watch him play against West Ham and Real Madrid. I was very proud and supporters have the opportunity to feel the same.”

WE’RE ON OUR WAY: ELLAND ROADThe Cherries will visit the biggest stadium of their Championship season so far on Tuesday night as they face Leeds United.Boasting a capacity of 37,900, Elland Road has hosted some of the biggest names in world football during the Whites’ Premier League and European adventures, and will be one of the highlights for visiting Cherries supporters as they embark on their first season in the second tier of English football for over 20 years.

Having been sent an initial allocation of 1,500 tickets for the clash, travelling Cherries supporters will be housed in the upper tier of the John Charles stand. Seating is combined between plastic and wooden, and leg room is sparse but the atmosphere, especially under the lights at Elland Road, is one not to be missed.

Alcohol is sold within the ground, however there are a

number of food and drink outlets nearby. The Drysalters pub is about a ten minute walk away and there is a McDonalds situated across from the East Stand. The Old Peacock pub is also near, but this is mainly designed for home supporters.

If travelling by car, the postcode to use is LS11 0ES. Follow the A58 or A61 into Leeds city centre, then follow signs for the M621. Continue along the M621, before leaving the motorway at the junction with the A643. Follow this road into Elland

Road and pass the ground to find two large car parks.

Travelling by train is another option, however, the train station is around a 35 minute walk away and so it is advisable to take either a taxi or shuttle bus from there to the ground.

Alternatively the Cherries supporters coach, sponsored by afcb.vitalfootball.co.uk will depart from the Goldsands Stadium at 12.30pm. Spaces cost £32 per person for season ticket holders and £40 per person for non-season ticket holders.

The Cherries development centre is today marking its first success story, as Bryn Loveday signs for the academy.

Nine-year-old Bryn has been attending the Lychett advanced development centre for the past six months, and having impressed the academy talent spotters during a six week trial, he will now sign for the under-10s on the pitch ahead of today’s match against Blackburn.

And development centre manager Andy Howe, who scouted him at a local tournament in March, is delighted to witness his progression into the club’s academy set-up.

“Bryn has exceptional power and strength for his age,” he told Matchday. “He is a direct centre forward, who provides

“EDDIE’S SUCCESS SO FAR HASN’T BEEN THROUGH LUCK, IT HAS BEEN BUILT ON HARD WORK AND PLANNING.”

A quick look at the statistics from Chris Hargreaves’ playing days suggests he had a career that some players could only dream of. He started at Everton and went on to represent Grimsby Town, Hull City, West Bromwich Albion, Northampton Town, Brentford, Oxford United and Torquay United in a career that lasted more than 20 years and featured almost 700 appearances and four promotions.

But numbers alone can’t explain the highs and lows that made his story one of uncompromising ambition, numerous transfers and, ultimately, success before he retired in May 2010.

It’s the type of story only football and its unpredictable nature can produce. So it would have come as no surprise to Hargreaves when the next chapter of his life in football, this time as a coach at AFC Bournemouth, soon took on a life of its own.

In just over 12 months at the Goldsands Stadium, he was promoted from development coach to first team coach and went on to play a part in the Cherries’ return to the second tier following an absence of almost 25 years.

Now, after two decades of switching clubs and travelling up and down the country to train and play, does he feel more settled with his initials rather than a squad number on his training kit?

“I moved around so much because I played for so long. I was a pro for 23 years and

you are going to have a few clubs in that time,” he explains.

“Looking back, maybe I should have stayed at clubs longer but I was always looking to play higher or I suppose, like most players do, trying to get a better deal. Ultimately, I didn’t achieve what I wanted to in the game.

“Rumoured big money transfers didn’t happen, through bad advice and bad luck, and maybe bad performances! Maybe I was sometimes a little hasty with decisions, and my off the field antics certainly didn’t help, but I did a job I dreamt of doing. I captained four clubs and I led a team up the steps at Wembley after scoring in a play-off final, so I’m certainly not complaining.

“It’s difficult to compare coaching to playing because playing is the be all and end all. Crossing the white line and feeling the adrenaline rush is the ultimate, it is no doubt the reason why so many players have struggled, both financially and emotionally, when their careers inevitably come to an end. You can then only regret what you didn’t do. Some are fortunate enough to get coaching jobs and I’m fortunate to be one of them.”

“With coaching, hopefully it turns out to be a career of longevity and, at the moment, I’m at club which is solid and I’m really enjoying it.

“The fans must be pinching themselves because, in my opinion, the football the club produces is at a very high standard. Trying to play football the right way may look easy but I can assure you it is not.

“The owner has invested heavily in the club which cannot be underestimated, and with that comes pressure to achieve. But that is football and the way players and coaches would all want it, to be challenging for

we all want, players and staff, to win games and achieve things in the game,” he adds.

“I did more coaching with the development squad because it was my team, as a first team coach I probably work on specific sessions with smaller groups or individuals. Eddie puts his stamp on most of the training, he applies his detail into everything and he has been very successful with that approach.

“Everything has to be good as it possibly can be for the players. Eddie’s success so far hasn’t been through luck, it has been built on hard work and planning.”

Hargreaves explains that management is, in time, his ultimate ambition, which is understandable for a man who has dedicated his life to the game and has designs for a successful career as a coach. There is, however, more than football on the former Hull City midfielder’s CV.

Following his retirement, he opened a sports shop in Sidmouth, Devon, and wrote two books, Captain’s Blog and Where’s Your Caravan? Although, he insists there was no doubt in his mind that he would remain in the game that has shaped his life.

“I wanted to start a business because I wanted that solidity in the background, so I opened a sports shop while I was coaching at Exeter. It was tough and something that I can assure you opened my eyes to the real world. I soon realised how incredibly fortunate

I had been to be playing football for a living,” he says.

“But I was always coaching, working with the under-16s and 18s at Exeter. Football is my life and I wanted to stay in it.”

While football remains his main focus, writing is an enduring passion and he says his two books may have been read by some members of the Cherries backroom team.

“Some of the lads in the office may have had a sneaky look at the book, but I don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing. They do say though that everyone has a book in them and I would agree. I thoroughly

As the Cherries take to the field to host Blackburn Rovers this afternoon, Hargreaves will be elsewhere, watching upcoming opponents and beginning the preparations for the next game. Life on the road doesn’t come with the same excitement and adrenaline rush of a match day, but it’s a role that gives him an integral purpose.

“I’m often doing thousands of miles a week, going to games, as well as travelling home to see my beautiful children and my wife. But I feel it is important to

enjoyed writing both books and it was a cathartic, but sometimes sad experience. I still write a column for the Express and Echo newspaper in Exeter. Football does feature heavily in it, but it could just as well cite the state of the economy or simply how bad the A35 is!” he says.

“After retiring I was very reflective and probably would have written the second book a little differently if I were to write it now. But it didn’t do too badly, it sold around 60,000 copies and may I add would still make a fantastic Christmas present. You can still find it

“The green stuff is what it’s all about for me though and that is where I enjoy being every day. I want to be coaching and working with the players, but believe me Eddie and Jason have got it sorted when it comes to Saturday, and win, lose or draw it’s back to work after a game. It’s a real pleasure to be working with the staff and the players. Long may it continue.”

Fitness First, who provide memberships for first team players, allowing them to keep in top shape during the season, will offer discounts to season ticket holders and run a community project with the club.

The initiative will see the AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust work with ten local junior football teams to offer expert coaching free of charge, in turn, improving children’s fitness.

League One Cherries toppled their Premiership hosts in a penalty shoot-out after the sides had fought out a 3-3 draw after extra-time at Ewood Park.

But for a Morten Pedersen goal in the last seconds of normal time, making the score 2-2, Sean O’Driscoll’s side would not have had to endure the 30-minute extra period or the penalty contest from which they eventually emerged victorious.

Only Lucas Neill and Brett Emerton remained for the Blackburn side that had narrowly beaten Portsmouth the previous Saturday and despite taking an early lead, they found Bournemouth equally difficult opposition. Emerton, the Australian international had the simplest of finishes after eight minutes when Javier de Pedro sent Matt Jansen through on goal and the striker’s low drive was only partially saved by Cherries goalkeeper Neil Moss.

However, the visitors hit back five minutes later with a breakaway goal. Wade Elliott’s cross from the right evaded the Rovers back line and Garreth O’Connor struck a sweetly-timed volley low past Peter Enckelman. Blackburn found clear-cut openings difficult to create as Bournemouth fought hard and used the counter-attack tactic to their advantage. Inspired by the livewire O’Connor in midfield, the Cherries came close to taking the lead on several occasions before with eight minutes remaining he forced a corner with a deflected shot. From the flag-kick O’Connor retained the ball and crossed for Karl Broadhurst to direct a powerful header past Enckelman.

Deep in injury-time, Pedersen rescued Rovers, who then almost surprised themselves by moving 3-2 ahead two minutes into extra-time when Paul Gallagher

drove the ball into the net. An upset looked unlikely at this stage, as Bournemouth seemed to be rocked by the goal and O’Driscoll’s side tired in their attempts to find another equaliser. But having regained their composure, Enckelman was again called into action to superbly save a free-kick from John Spicer. Then Spicer went one better, heading in Derek Holmes’ pinpoint cross with five minutes left in extra-time to send the game into a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

After sixteen spot-kicks, Eddie Howe finally scored the vital penalty to punish misses by Tugay and Blackburn substitute Jon Stead, who blazed high over the bar. The shock result, Rovers manager Mark Hughes first defeat since taking over at the club, ended a thrilling game and earned the Cherries a standing ovation from their supporters in the Darwen End.

AFC Bournemouth and leading data centre and connectivity solution provider C4L have teamed up to deliver an innovative project, Connect With Care.

The programme is run by the club’s Community Sports Trust, which started at the beginning of the academic year, and will run for 40 weeks.

Its aim is to educate parents and pupils about the potential dangers when using the internet, while also increasing awareness of online safety.

Head of the Community Sports Trust Steve Cuss was encouraged by the initial sessions and is looking forward to visiting more schools in the coming weeks.

“We have had a really positive reaction from both pupils and teachers so far,” he said.

“It’s a subject which has only become an issue over

the last few years, but it’s an important one and I think everyone appreciates guidance about what they can do to ensure they have maximum security when they’re online.

“I would like to thank C4L for working with us and helping the programme run to such a high standard.”

C4L CEO Simon Mewett was pleased to see the project under way and believes it will be a resounding success.

“As an internet service provider headquartered in Bournemouth, C4L are delighted to support the Connect with Care scheme,” he said.

It all started on a field behind my auntie’s house. I was spotted playing for my school by a West Ham scout, who approached my dad about the possibility of me training with their academy. I couldn’t believe it when he told me.

Every player’s family is important to their career, but my parents had to support two boys at two different clubs. Me and my brother John, who was at Tottenham, were always training or playing whether it was for local, school or county teams and it wouldn’t have been possible without them making sure we got to where we needed to be. It wasn’t until I became a parent myself that I was able to appreciate everything they did for us.

Tony Carr was one of the biggest influences of my career. He was my youth team manager and everything we did in training was designed to improve us. It’s no surprise that most of the players he worked with have gone on to have successful careers.

There were so many good players in the West Ham youth team, it was an achievement just being in the starting line-up. It was probably the

Harry Redknapp gave me the best advice I ever got. He told me the best thing for me and my career would be to go and play first team football and that I would love it down here. He was right and I owe him a lot.

Everyone says it and it’s true – you can’t beat playing first team football. I didn’t expect to get into the team here straight away, but that’s what happened and I have loved every minute of it.

strongest youth team the club has ever had with players like Joe Cole and Michael Carrick. It wasn’t until half of the team was playing for England five years later that I realised how good it was.

I never quite got the break I needed, but it almost came in a UEFA Cup game at Upton Park. I got called up at the last minute for a game against Steaua Bucharest and was on the bench. I didn’t play, but it’s a night I will never forget.

It was a special time for West Ham with players like Stuart Pearce, Ian Wright and Paolo Di Canio at the club. It would have been hard for any young player to get into the first team at the time, but I can’t complain because it only made me a better player.

And the fixture was not only popular with supporters, with the BBC cameras in attendance and recognised pundit Jacqui Oatley presenting live coverage of the game.

This enhanced media coverage, Watson believes, will open people up to the possibility of both watching and playing the game.

“Since the creation of the Women’s Super League things have definitely improved and after Team GB’s success at the Olympics the BBC are giving the women’s game more and more air time,” she adds.

“It seems to be stuck in a vicious circle at the moment as it’s not getting much media time as it’s just not attracting the numbers, but similarly it’s not attracting the numbers because people aren’t hugely aware of the game.

“As it starts to get more media attention it will begin to attract more people and so standards of coaching will improve and there will be far more opportunities for women in football.”

And whilst Watson believes the future is bright for the sport, she is equally as positive about the Cherries’ Ladies chances this season.

“Before the season started we made the decision to split the squad into two teams to give all of our players as much game time as possible. We now have one team competing in the Dorset League and one in Hampshire.

“I’m playing for the Dorset side this year and we couldn’t have got off to a better start.

“After two games we’re currently top of the table, winning our opening games 6-1 and 6-0 and we’ve played some really fantastic stuff, so the early signs are certainly promising!”

The popularity of England Ladies’ arrival on to the south coast last weekend speaks volumes of the rise of women’s football in recent years.

Whilst 340 Cherries supporters travelled to the north-east to see the men’s side take on Middlesbrough, over 5,000 supporters filled the Goldsands Stadium as England Ladies took on Belarus in their FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Stars of the game Steph Houghton and Kelly Smith visited the stadium and local school children just a week before, whilst they also held an open training session at Hurn, the home of local non-league side Christchurch, the day before.

And with the demand for women’s football already having recently increased in the area, AFC Bournemouth Ladies player Sammy Watson believes the arrival of the country’s greatest footballers will only enhance its popularity further.

“I think women’s football in the area will really benefit from the game,” she explains. “It was really encouraging to see so many girls at the stadium on Saturday and hopefully England’s performance changed a lot of pre-conceived ideas, showing how much quality there is in women’s football.

IS THIS THE MOST EXTRAVAGANT CHERRIES SHIRT OF ALL TIME? QUITE POSSIBLY, BUT AS GARETH DAVIES EXPLAINS IT’S ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER TOO.

SHIRT TALESDifferent would perhaps be the kindest word to describe the Cherries away shirt for the 1992/93 and 1993/94 seasons. I am probably being too considerate in my description so let’s not beat around the bush, this shirt was truly obnoxious! You may be surprised – given that crude assessment - to find out that not only do I have this shirt in my collection, it’s one of my most treasured Cherries possessions.

It was the first away shirt made by Matchwinner who replaced Ellgren as kit suppliers in what was a chaotic period for the Cherries on and off the pitch. Harry Redknapp had resigned during the summer of 1992 to be replaced by Tony Pulis, who for the majority of his two seasons in charge was beset by either his best players being injured or sold to keep the club in business. The football was often dull and Tony seemed to lurch from one crisis to another whether it be falling out with the local press or at times his own players! I guess the playing strips of this era were quite apt given the turbulent state of affairs at Dean Court during the early 90’s!

Now to me, describing this shirt in words is difficult due to its diverse design and assorted colours, but perhaps Pulis hit the nail firmly on the head when he was asked what colour he thought the shirt was. His answer

consisted of a one word reply, ‘everything’. Spot on Tony.

It was in fact a mix of purple, green, navy blue and white, all arranged in lines and v’s. The only feature that was retained from the previous year’s Ellgren design was a collar but even this was unconventional. The Matchwinner logo appeared on both sleeves with the Cherries crest looking out of place in amongst such a garish design. For its first season of use, Exchange & Mart were sponsors but their agreement only lasted a year with Frizzell taking over for 1993/94. The white shorts and socks that accompanied this shirt seemed far too tame for something so flamboyant, if anything it made the shirt design stand out even more.

Matchwinner supplied a number of clubs’ kits in the lower English and Scottish Leagues during this time so we weren’t the only club to take to the field in something unusual and out of the ordinary. A quick flick through Dave Moor’s excellent book ‘The Worst Football Kits Of All Time’ sees Matchwinner feature predominantly, with this kit present along with some efforts to rival it too!

As I have already mentioned, the results on the pitch weren’t great during this shirt’s lifespan. Both seasons saw the team finish in the bottom half of Division Two and both seasons saw cup defeats to

today’s opponents Blackburn Rovers. The shirt was the first ever worn by a certain Steven Mark Fletcher who made his debut for the Cherries on the opening day of the 1992/93 campaign in a 1-1 draw away at Preston. The following year, the shirt adorned the Cherries in a 1-0 FA Cup replay win against Nuneaton which was broadcast live on Sky.

I pointed out at the start of this piece that I own this shirt, in fact the picture accompanying this article is of mine. The observant amongst you will notice that it doesn’t have a sponsor. This instantly makes this far more appealing to a collector like me. The reason it has no sponsor is because it was a prototype from Matchwinner and the lady I purchased it from used to work for them and found it in her loft! To give you an idea of its probable worth, I paid more for it in 2007 than a current day replica will cost you in the Club Store today.

It demonstrates that sometimes the worst can be the best in terms of value and how sought after a shirt is. I certainly think that applies with this offering although I can’t see the club ever basing another replica on this unsightly design, even though its popularity is probably greater now than it was 20 years ago.
