Respiratory disease

Respiratory Disease is the

term for diseases of the

respiratory system

These include diseases of the

lung, pleural cavity, bronchial

tubes, trachea, upper respiratory tract and

of the nerves and muscles of breathing

Respiratory diseases range from mild and self-limiting such as the common cold to life-threatening such

as bacterial pneumonia or

pulmonary embolism

The study of respiratory disease is known as

pulmonology

A doctor who specializes in respiratory disease is

known as a pulmonologist, a chest medicine specialist, a respiratory medicine

specialist, a respirologist or a thoracic medicine

specialist

Chronic obstructive pulmonary

disease (COPD)

* Chronic bronchitis, defined by a long-term cough with

mucus

* Emphysema, defined by destruction of the lungs

over time

Smoking is the leading cause of COPD. The

more a person smokes, the more likely that person will develop

COPD although some people smoke for years

and never get COPD

Since the symptoms of COPD develop

slowly, some people may be unaware that

they are sick.

The best test for COPD is a simple lung function

test called spirometry

Persons with COPD must stop smoking. This is the best way to slow down the lung damage.

Influence of smoking cessation after diagnosis of early stage lung

cancer on prognosis

Objective To systematically

review the evidence that

smoking cessation after diagnosis of

a primary lung tumour affects

prognosis

Study selection Randomised controlled trials or observational

longitudinal studies that measured the effect of quitting smoking after diagnosis of lung

cancer on prognostic outcomes, regardless of stage at

presentation or tumour histology, were included

Two researchers independently

identified studies for inclusion and extracted data

In 9/10 included

studies, most patients studied were diagnosed

as having an early stage lung

tumour

and Influence of smoking cessation after diagnosis of early stage lung cancer on

prognosis.

I also cannot find the best material in the books from library because it not a

university level but academic books in primary school only. After that I try to write the

graphic organizer from all my materials. I tried to use the material to identified

supporting details that can use in my forum script.

Lung specialist script

Lung specialist: Respiratory disease is common disease in the world. Smoking

can damage our respiratory system. Respiratory Disease is the term for diseases of

the respiratory system. These include diseases of the lung, pleural cavity, bronchial

tubes, trachea, and upper respiratory tract and of the nerves and muscles of

breathing. Respiratory diseases range from mild and self-limiting such as the

common cold to life-threatening such as bacterial pneumonia or pulmonary

embolism.

Lung specialist: The study of respiratory disease is known as pulmonology. A

doctor who specializes in respiratory disease is known as a pulmonologist, a chest

medicine specialist, a respiratory medicine specialist, a respirologist or a thoracic

medicine specialist.

Lung specialist: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the

most common lung diseases. It makes it difficult to breathe. There are two main

forms of COPD:

Chronic bronchitis, defined by a long-term cough with mucus

Emphysema, defined by destruction of the lungs over time

Most people with COPD have a combination of both conditions

Lung specialist: The causes is form exposure to certain gases or fumes in the

workplace, exposure to heavy amounts of second-hand smoke and frequent use of

cooking gas without proper ventilation.

Lung specialist: Cough with mucus, shortness of breath (dyspneadyspnea) that

gets worse with mild activity, fatigue, and frequent respiratory infections and

wheezing. Since the symptoms of COPD develop slowly, some people may be

unaware that they are sick.

Lung specialist: The best test for COPD is a simple lung function test called

spirometer. This involves blowing out as hard as one can into a small machine that

tests lung capacity. The test can be interpreted immediately and does not involve

exercising, drawing blood, or exposure to radiation.Using a stethoscope to listen to

the lungs can also be helpful, although sometimes the lungs sound normal even

when COPD is present. Pictures of the lungs (such as X-rays and CT scans) can be

helpful but sometimes look normal even when a person has COPD. Sometimes it is

necessary to do a blood test (call a “blood gas”) to measure the amounts of oxygen

and carbon dioxide in the blood.

Lung specialist: There is no cure for COPD. However, there are many things you

can do to relieve symptoms and keep the disease from getting worse. Persons with

COPD must stop smoking. This is the best way to slow down the lung damage.

Medications used to treat COPD include:

Inhalers (bronchodilators) to open the airways, such as ipratropium (Atrovent),

tiotropium (Spiriva), salmeterol (Serevent), or formoterol (Foradil)

Inhaled steroids to reduce lung inflammation
