Materials Handling

Materials handling is the art and science of moving, packing and storing of substances in any form.

Material Handling It is defined as art and science of moving, packaging, and storing of substances of firms. Creation of time and place utility.Movement and storage of material at lowest possible cost through use of proper methods and equipments.Lifting, shifting and placing of materials which effect saving in money, time and place

Scope of Material Handling This activity within an organization depends on the type of the product manufactured, the size of organization , the value to product and value of the activity being performed and relative importance of materials handling to the enterprise. There are 3 perspectives about material handlingThe traditional point of viewPlant wide concern for overall flow of materialsThe system point of view

Tradition point view of material handling from one location to another within individual plant. The concern is to find best way to move materials from one place to another within plantIt concern focuses the attention on overall flow of material in the plant. It is inter-relationship between all handling problems and possibility of establishing an overall material handling plan. It visualization of material handling problems, physical distribution activities. This point of view involves a much broader consideration of all materials handling activities involving movement of material from all source of supply

Importance of Material HandlingEfficient material handling is important to manufacturing operations. Material send by vendors must be loaded, move through inspections and products operations to stores and finally shipment department. These movement do not add value to product but they do add to cost.Material handling analysis is subset of plant layout. Plant layout and material handling are all part of design of production facility. A good plant layout enables an operation to use most efficient handling method. Efficient Operation of appropriate material handling methods reduce costs and enables Max capabilities.

Importance of Material HandlingFunction of production controlConcerned with scheduling of production controlMaterial Handling adds value to product costMaterial Handling increases effectiveness of in plant layout by reducing the cost

Objectives of Materials HandlingTo Lowers unit materials handling costTo reduce manufacturing cycle time To provide better control of the flow of materialsTo provide better working conditionsTo provide Contribution for better quality by avoiding damages to productsTo Increase storage capacity through better utilization of storage areas. To provide higher productivity at lower manufacturing costs

Material Handling PrinciplesMaterial should be moved as little as possibleReduction in time by using shortest routers and mechanical material handling equipmentThe material movement should be in lots rather than in individual unitsDesign of material handling equipment should be such that it can increase the effectivenessRehandling of materials should be avoidedPeriodically Repairing , Maintaince & Checkup of existing material handling equipments

Types of Material Handling Systems1. Equipments oriented systems :-Convey or SystemsTractor transfer systemFork lift truck Industrial truck system Underground system2. Material Oriented SystemsUnit handling systemBulk handling systemLiquid handling system

Types of Materials Handling Equipment

ConveyersCranes, Elevators and HoistsIndustrial TrucksAuxiliary EquipmentsMiscellaneous Equipments

1. Conveyors-Powered devices Used for moving loads from one point to point over fixed paths.

Belt Conveyor-Motor driven belt usually made of metal fabric

Chain Conveyor-Motor driven chain that drags material along a metal side base.

Roller Conveyor- Boxes , large parts or units loads roll on top of a series of rollers mounted on a rigid frame.

Pneumatic Conveyor-High volume of air flows through a tube carrying materials along with air flow.

2. Cranes, Elevators and Hoists

These are overhead devices used for moving varying loads intermittently between points within an area.

Cranes Devices mounted on overheard rail or ground wheels or rails .They lift, swing and transport large and heavy materials

Elevators Types of cranes that lift materials usually between floors or buildings

Hoists- Move vertically or horizontally in limited area

3. Industrial Trucks- May be electric, diesel, gasoline or gas powered

Fort lift Truck

Pallet truck-

Auxiliary Equipments - Devices or attachments used with handling equipments to make their use more effective and versatile

Miscellaneous Equipments

Pipe lines which are closed tubes that transport liquids by mean of pumpAutomatic transfer device which automatically grasp material , hold them firmly while operations are being performed and move them to other locationAutomated guided vehicle system Industrial Robot

Skid boxes

AssignmentsDiscuss material handling principles.Discuss various material handlings Equipments.Discuss material handling principles and classify material handling equipments.Explain Principles of material handling and list down material handling equipments
