Materials Handling : is loading, moving and unloading of materials,To do it safely and economically .

Some of the other definitions are: Materials handling is the movement and storage of materials at the

lowest possible cost through the use of proper methods and equipment.

The materials handling is referred to as mechanical handling ofmaterials .

The essential requirements of a good materials handling systemmay be summarized as:

(i) Efficient and safe movement of materials to the desired place.

(ii) Timely movement of the materials when needed.(iii) Supply of materials at the desired rate.(iv) Storing of materials utilising minimum space.(v) Lowest cost solution to the materials handling activities.

A programmable logic controller (PLC) or programmablecontroller is a digital computer used for automation of

electromechanical processes.

EX :control of machinery on factory assembly lines, amusementrides, or light fixtures .

Programmable logic controllers ( PLC ) are designed to beable to take information from a variety of different sensorsand use it to control a variety of different machines.

When a PLC receives an instruction, it responds instantly,issuing controls to its motors.

How Does a Programmable Logic Controller Work?

Input :

- PLCs receive information from a variety ofdifferent sensors.

- Many of the sensors are actually simple switches.

- PLCs can also use more complex inputs such ascameras ormicrophones designed to recognize certain

patterns.

For example ;If a PLC in a furniture plant had to move a board down a conveyor beltinto a certain position, it might have a pressure switch at the end of theconveyor belt. When the board reached that position it would push theswitch, letting the PLC know that it was in position.

Output :

- A PLC can turn on and off the power to lights andother electronic equipment .

- A PLC will usually do a variety of simple tasks in a

specific order.

For example;A PLC used in wood work might first make rectangular cuts in a board,then make curved or angled cuts for decoration, then sand the piece andfinally spray paint it. This could involve several machines connectedtogether by a conveyor belt and all controlled by the same PLC.

How the PLC operates ?

Scan cycle :Exact details vary between manufacturers, but most PLCs

follow a 'scan-cycle' format.

Overhead :Overhead includes testing I/O module integrity, verifying theuser program logic hasn't changed, that the computer itselfhasn't locked up (via a watchdog timer) .

Input scan :

A 'snapshot' of the digital and analog values present at theinput cards is saved to an input memory table.

Logic execution :

The user program is scanned element by element, then rungby rung until the end of the program, and resulting valueswritten to an output memory table.

Output scan :

Values from the resulting output memory table are written tothe output modules .

Once the output scan is complete the process repeats itselfuntil the PLC is powered down.

The time it takes to complete a scan cycle is, appropriatelyenough, the "scan cycle time", and ranges from hundreds ofmilliseconds (on older PLCs, and/or PLCs with very complexprograms) to only a few milliseconds on newer PLCs, and/orPLCs executing short, simple code.
