The Materially Informed Design to Robotic Production systems, MID2RP, establish frameworks for design systems in which integration and customization of production systems enhance and augment designer’s understanding for design materialization. MID2RP establishes feedback loops from physical production to digital design systems and expand the capabilities of design parametrization and computation procedures for measurement, analysis and evaluation. The main performance criteria in MID2RP research cases are environmental and structural. With these criteria, the objective is to realize porous and hybrid physical prototypes with performative material architectures. Methods for design information exchange with goal of integration of material optimization in parametric models; Informed-Robotic-3D-Printing with the goal of depositing material where needed and as needed; Multimode-Robotic-Production methods with the goal of purposefully expanding the potentials of single production methods; and Informed-Porosity research project with goal to remove material where it is not needed and propose assembly methods of mass customized components, are all prototypical examples in which the MID2RP methodology is developed and tested at one to one scale. Research Methodology: The framework for the research methodology is defined within the realm of design research in which research is included in the design process, and in the case of this project embedded in the design to production procedures. In addition to purposefully reviewing, understanding and assessing the state-of-the-art, prototyping and testing are the leading methods in MID2RP project. Research Summary: The aim of this research is design, development and application of novel design to robotic production systems in order to achieve performance driven and material efficient constructible design solutions for architectural scales ranging from macro to micro.

Main Question: How to integrate and customize robotic production methods in design procedures that could advance the process of design computation and materialization at macro and micro scales, and how this would expand designer’s understanding of digital and physical design materiality?

Deliverables: MID2RP Methodology: Materially Informed Design to Robotic Production systems with cases on Design Information Integration, Robotic 3D Printing, Multi-Mode D2RP for structurally and environmentally efficient material architecture.
