That ist our university
Lars Kok, bachelor student: Materials Science is a playground for research and development – it offers insights into many fields of knowledge and good possibilities to experiment within the included internships. Ilmenau is a pleasant place to study and to live – all places are nearby at the campus, labo-ratories are well equipped and everything is very personal. I really recommend: Visit us and get con-vinced yourself!
Professor Peter Schaaf: Small and fine; our uni-versity offers a lot of personal contact and support. I enjoy learning and researching together with our students.
Materials Science and Engineering
in Ilmenau stands for:
+ a broad and practical university education
+ first class personal student care and support
at a small and excellent campus university
+ exciting research work in national and international
projects
International perspective / double degreeWithin the master program students have the opportunity to spend an academic year at the Pontificia Universidad Catòlica del Peru (PUCP) in Lima/Peru and to receive a double degree in Materials Science and Engineering. Of course abroads are also possible and encouraged at other time. The Institute for Materials Engineering maintains close contacts to many foreign universities in:
CanadaUSA
Czech Republic
NorwayGreat Britain
AustraliaSouth AfrikaPeru
SlowakiaIsraelAustriaSweden
ChinaFrance
India
Algeria
Anna Franz, bachelor student: The campus university with its shorts distances and personal relationships to professors has convinced me to come to Ilmenau – and the lack of study fees! I de-cided to study Materials Science and Engineering because of the excellent job perspectives. Within my bachelor program I get to know all material areas without the need to specialize from the very beginning. Only within the master program I will decide for a certain study concentration.

Materials Science and Engineering at the Technische Universität Ilmenau – Bachelor of Science and Master of Science
What does Materials Science and Enginee-ring mean?Whether environmental and energy technology, medicine or automotive industry - the „right” materials determine the success of new products with new characteristics. Mate-rials take up a key position in our modern industrial society. Material scientists and engineers aim to develop, produce, examine and improve materials with certain attributes – in relation to the planned application – and to clarify material damages. The study program Materials Science and Engineering suits students who wish to apply physics and chemistry in a practical way and who want to develop innovative materials and products that improve our life and sustainably influen-ces our society.
Our study program is supported by the Institute for Material Engineering that unites all material related groups at the Technische Universität Ilmenau. The institute integrates stu-dents in all institutional activities and offers modern equip-ment as well as personal contacts to fellow students and instructors. The study program is incorporated in the “Thu-ringia composite study Materials Science and Engineering”.

Bachelor program – 6 semestersThe study program Materials Science and Engineering with the degree Bachelor of Science imparts within six semesters a broad basic knowledge about the correlation between struc-ture and characteristics of materials with regard to produc-tion, processing, editing, application, recycling and disposal.
Engineering and scientific subjects
• Mathematics, physics,chemistry
• Computer science• Mechanical engineering• Manufacturing processes• Electrical engineering• Electrical measurement• Foreign language• Business administration
Material scientific basics
• Material scientific basics• Crystallography• Material testing and
characterization• Materials technology
- Glass and ceramics- Metals and semiconductor- Surfaces and coating
technology
Master program – 4 semestersThe Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering deepens the knowledge about structure, characteristics, pro-duction and development of all kinds of materials.
Master subjects with integrated practical training:• Consolidation of scientific basics • Consolidation of materials engineering• Materials of micro- and nanotechnology • Special plastics technology • Surface technology and Electroplating • Material selection, condition and analysis
Practical experiences within the study programsBasic as well as material oriented practical trainings connect theory and practice during the bachelor program. Another special offering is the project with seminar within the fifth semester. The Institute for Material Engineering organizes excursions and experiments and cooperates with numerous national and international industrial companies to ensure to students a close practical relation of their study. Our students are integrated into research projects at an early stage of their study program and handle projects tasks independently.
As a specialty the master program includes a complex project with a main seminar.
Best career perspectivesMaterial scientists and engineers from the Technische Uni-versität Ilmenau enjoy an excellent reputation and mostly receive interesting job offers even before their end of study. Exciting job perspectives reach worldwide from material de-velopment over the improvement of production processes up to material testing or recycling, for instance in compa-nies and institutions in the areas of:
• Energy and environmental technology • Automotive construction• Aviation and Aerospace • Electronics and electrical engineering• Micro- and nanotechnology • Mechanical engineering• Biomedical Engineering and many more
Christoph Baumer, graduate: My interests for chemistry and technics guided me to the study of Materials Science and Engineering, the excellent equipment and student support brought me to Ilmenau. During the master program I used the double degree offering – for me a unique chance to meet the country and culture of Peru. My job start was very easy because there are many good offerings for material scientists and engineers. To-day I delevop new methods in the field of electro-plating and especially appreciate the connection of science and practice.
Individual specializations
• Inorganic-nonmetallic materials• Metallic and composite materials• Plastics technology• Materials for electrical engineering and electronics• Electrochemistry and electroplating
