    ---------------------troyapeterson: is my mic on?

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): nope

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): you need to press the button under the chat

    ---------------------troyapeterson: again, YAY!

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): I just emailed david weksler he said he would be joining us.

    david weksler: Hi, Maria

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): hi david W!

---------------------David P: Hi , I am a Math coach from southern ontario

---------------------David P: I heard about this on twitter

---------------------david weksler: I'm David Weksler. I'm in New Jersey and I work with math teacher

s helping them learn to use more technology/web tools in their teaching

---------------------Anna-Marie: I am an online math teacher from Idaho, USA

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): I am Maria Droujkova, I am from Natural Math community and I live in North Carolina, USA

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): I'll be sharing about my CLIME community later I guess.

---------------------tonyforster: Tony Forster, developing materials for LOGO like programming languages, Game Maker and Turtle Art

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): I'm a big logo fan.

---------------------troyapeterson: I'm the CEO of Nibipedia. We mashed up Facebook, Youtube and Wikipedia. This creates a social learning environment. I'm a math phobe with an unnatural interest in the history of the study of prime numbers.

    ---------------------david weksler: unnatural?

    3/15

    ---------------------troyapeterson: for a math phobe.

    ---------------------david weksler: yes

    ---------------------

troyapeterson: Music of the Primes blew my mind.

    ---------------------tonyforster: too big my screen

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): you can make it smaller on your screen

---------------------david weksler: have you seen tones.wolfram.com

    ---------------------

    tonyforster: how make smaller?

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): what is it, David?

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): can you drag it by the corner?

---------------------tonyforster: if i drag smaller i see even less

---------------------troyapeterson: checking it right now. tones.wolfram.com

---------------------david weksler: wolfram web-based application to create music from patterns

---------------------Anna-Marie: It's off the screen, can you make it a little smaller

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): we see http://web.mac.com/ihor12/CLIME/notctime.html/

    ---------------------troyapeterson: Clime! Woo Hoo!

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): is it better, Anna-Marie?

    ---------------------troyapeterson: tones.wolfram.com OMG!

    ---------------------david weksler: kind of amazing

    ---------------------Anna-Marie: yes, better

    ur phone

---------------------troyapeterson: truly. David, if you're into that sort of thing, I'd like to talk to you about some of the music stuff we've worked on, talked about at nibi...

    ---------------------

david weksler: I dont' know much about tones.wolfram.com - just played with it alittle bit

---------------------troyapeterson: Music and Math are too cool to not be easier to learn...

    ---------------------david weksler: yes

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): http://www.mathedleadership.org/

    ---------------------troyapeterson: http://khanacademy.nibipedia.com

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): NCSM's site

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): Naming is difficult here - some people call that "computational math" and some "virtual manipulatives" (part of it) and Dynamic Tools is another name

---------------------troyapeterson: I have two pop up booths if you are interested in borrowing them.

    An 8 X 10 and a 10 X 10

    ---------------------david weksler:

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): I think they provide the booths as such... it's thecontent we need to worry about!

---------------------troyapeterson: They make a nice backdrop...

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova):

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): So, Ihor, how can we make it OUR homework?

---------------------troyapeterson: How much is the internet connection?

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): Hello, Richard!

    ---------------------

    Richard Rusczyk 1: Hi

Moderator (Maria Droujkova): chat working - how about sound?

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: I can hear

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): good

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: Will try talking later

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): excellent

---------------------troyapeterson: Do you have a video projector?

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: Is this talking about the NCMT?

    ---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: *NCTM?

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): NCSM, I think

---------------------troyapeterson: I have a pop up you can project on.

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): this one http://www.mathedleadership.org/

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): are you going?

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): o_O

---------------------troyapeterson: How much is the internet connection?

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: No. I used to go to the NCTM every year, but we have decidedto stop going. We're hosting a party with our math contest friends and severaldozen teachers. (It's in San Diego this year, which is a home game for us)

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): How do we crowdsource it? Please grab microphone and share your idea. Or type it.

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): livingmath.net

---------------------troyapeterson: I can send tweets out if there is a link. Nibipedia has a group,I can send there too...

    ---------------------tonyforster: mics muted

    ---------------------tonyforster: cant

---------------------Anna-Marie: I know the state dept of ed math person in my state, I know whe hase-mail address of all math teachers in my state.

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): there you are

    ---------------------Anna-Marie: Idaho

---------------------tonyforster: There are more, etoys, gamemaker, Dr Geo ...

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): Maybe we can formulate a "form" people can fill fortheir communities? Submit a slide, a picture as responses

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: Not meaning to interrupt, but I think one thing that will bevery important at such a conference is to have a clear definition of what Math2.0 is to relate to people.

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): I have been blogging about the definition...

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): It's our first question

    ---------------------

Anna-Marie: I teach for an online school, every school is different as far as what they "allow" but of course it is allowed for me

---------------------troyapeterson: ihor, what is your blog

    ---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): climeconnections.blogspot.com

---------------------tonyforster: 2.0 maths activities with emphasis on authorship and web publishing?

    ---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): YES!

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): That's why I like Scratch so much!

    ---------------------Anna-Marie: y

    ---------------------david weksler: yes

    ---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): yes

    7/15

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): loud and clear

---------------------tonyforster: OLPC/Sugarlabs are investigating upload site for Turtle Art

    ---------------------

Moderator (Maria Droujkova): NCTM people don't like math?

---------------------david weksler: have you talked to people at Key Curriculum Press, Richard?

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): That might not be fair to say that

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): goodness

    ---------------------

Moderator (Maria Droujkova): I believe you, but it's sad

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): That might be true

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): You're right.... the conference is have rough timeslately

---------------------troyapeterson: Did anyone watch the TED Talk on Autism this week? There were some interesting insights on math.

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): I was on the local arrangement committee for Phillyin 2005

---------------------tonyforster: Good Math2.0: relevant, authentic, low entry high ceiling tools andrelationship with audience

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): They were talking about discontinuing the annual meetings and just go with the regional

    ---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: Interesting

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: Due to diminishing attendance?

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): Its a very difficult conference to put on and it gets harder every year

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): Hi Maureen

---------------------Maureen Watts: Hi Maria, I hope i'm not too late.

    8/15

---------------------tonyforster: is this slide on the web?

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: Seems reasonable. I did have a pretty receptive crowd when Ispoke in Palm Springs (CA) and in Dallas (the TX conference)

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): http://mind42.com/pub/mindmap?mid=dec0c458-c74e-4057-b041-c74d26b986e0

    ---------------------tonyforster: thanks

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/ Richard's site

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): Maureen, can you please introduce yourself and your

    project/community

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): Most of the teachers are local - its a once in lifetime event for them.

---------------------david weksler: There's a great deal of attention to getting students up to par -less for advanced students

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: Exactly. They're working on a different problem than I am.

---------------------Maureen Watts: I'm the ICT coordinator in a secondary college in Victoria, Australia. I also teach computer publishing and animation and Intermediate English. I'm charged with facilitating the embedding of ICT in the school's curriculum. Our community is a town of about 11,000 and the school has a student population of700.

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): http://khanacademy.nibipedia.com/ Troy's site

---------------------david weksler: And, Richard, that's a much bigger population than yours

---------------------troyapeterson: disclaimer: I just put this together tonight no graphics...

    ---------------------david weksler: looks fine, troya

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: Yep, absolutely. I understand why they're doing what they'redoing, but I think a lot of their positions do the students I'm targeting a disservice.

    ---------------------

    Anna-Marie: y

Richard Rusczyk 1: (I'm also not convinced they're serving their target audiencewell, either, but that's another story.)

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): turn the audio off

    ---------------------

Anna-Marie: I think we can all control opening the videos, I have been watchingthem

---------------------david weksler: I think you're right - but SO MUCH is driven by efforts to improve school results of state proficiency tests - that's the focus

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): its very loud

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): everybody has to start their own videos

    ---------------------david weksler: yes

---------------------Maureen Watts: Maria, I don't have anything to contribute at this stage - I'm just visiting for some ideas and areas I should be considering. We are almost ready to start inter-school projects.

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): I cant hear you troy

    ---------------------

    Moderator (Maria Droujkova): Sure

    ---------------------david weksler:

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): I turned it off.

    ---------------------david weksler: yes

    ---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): yes

    ---------------------Anna-Marie: I can hear

    ---------------------david weksler:

---------------------david weksler: We're glad that you know NOTHING about math

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): lol

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): we can't see where you are in the video, either

Moderator (Maria Droujkova): My main questions - what sort of help and support can you use in your effort from a network?

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: Is part of the goal of the conference to find partner producers? Or is the main goal to get school systems interested in what you're doing?Or both?

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: I hear you.

---------------------Maureen Watts: Ideas for engaging kids. Ideas for engaging other teachers who are really strapped for time.

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: I go to the NCTM for that group of friends I've made.

    ---------------------

Anna-Marie: I am working on my M.Edtech in Mathematics and I am working to put more activities in a better way to motivate students to "want" to learn more. I am here to get ideas

---------------------troyapeterson: I've got to sign off, if anyone wants to follow up, I'm [email protected] I can donate a pop up booth (projection screen), help tweetout links and would be happy to pay for the internet connection. You guys keepup the great work and let's make math less painful.

---------------------david weksler: Do you want to talk a bit about Dan Meyer and his blog, Ihor?

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): thanks troy. I'll keep you posted about what climeis doing.

    ---------------------troyapeterson: Boo Textbook!

    ---------------------david weksler: makes sense

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): http://elgg.openschool.bc.ca/pg/groups/1623/math-20/ is a recent British Columbia conference by a group Ihor mentioned

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: That's bizarre; what's the rationale for *not* wanting them to communicate?

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): they may use swear words, usually... and cheating

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): you might be interested in the noon day collaborative project http://ciese.org/noonday

---------------------Maureen Watts: Meebo has good collaborative functions - chat in real time and itcan be a protected site.

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): Tony do you have website about what you are doing or know about scratch?

---------------------Richard Rusczyk 1: But they may be interested in it least

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): http://wowinschool.pbworks.com/

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): http://www.ciese.org/curriculum/noonday/

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): will these projects apply to your setting?

---------------------Maureen Watts: Yes, we have good ict resources

---------------------david weksler: Anna-Marie mentioned that collaboration is not a popular topic ather school

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): aye, that's why I asked

---------------------tonyforster: http://etrain.pbworks.com/GameMakers encourage students to share and build on each others projects

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): watch carl sagan tell the story of eratosthenes itsfascintating.

---------------------Maureen Watts: I'm trying stuff with discussion posts on wikis for sharing ideasabout poetry at the moment and it seems to be catching the motivated kids, but

the others are just socialising. I don't know whether they will pull each otherinto line later down the track.

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): GameMaker is neat

    ---------------------

    Moderator (ihor Charischak): htt://www.gamemaker.nl

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): What do we do with/for unmotivated kids? Do we care?

---------------------david weksler: Richard is working with a strongly self-selected population

    ---------------------david weksler:

---------------------david weksler: it's a harder issue, in some sense

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): Tony, what is your experience on less motivated people?

---------------------Maureen Watts: It seems to be a question of instant gratification and I think that ict can provide that, but programs and equipment that is slow or not up to the task defeat them and they seem to feel it is their fault

    ---------------------

Anna-Marie: I have open enrollment. Every Monday I have new students. It makes anything synchronous very difficult.

---------------------david weksler: do the students have some sort of educational plan, Anna-Marie -and a way they could contribute to a portfolio to allow them to demonstrate whatthey know?

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): So you don't have continuity, basically?

    ---------------------Maureen Watts: Yes!!!!

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): no mac version for gamemaker

---------------------david weksler: Bob Moses - Algebra Project for disadvantaged students - "Math isa civil right."

---------------------Anna-Marie: we don't have a portfolio school wide, but I could implement one, these are the kinds of ideas I am mulling around

    ---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): http://www.freewebs.com/schoolgamemaker

  • 8/14/2019 Math 2.0 Interest Group 03 03 2010 Meeting Chat Only

    14/15

---------------------Anna-Marie: no, I have no continuity among students

    ---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): http://www.algebra.org/

    ---------------------

Anna-Marie: However, I heard a rumor from another teacher that my school may bepiloting a new synchronous thread for invited students. I am excited about that

---------------------david weksler: all the more reason, Anna-Marie for some portfolio so the students can maintain a sense of what they know and have done

---------------------Maureen Watts: I'm working with a combination of skills building and personal projects for ict stuff. It works better because kids can build on their skills ona need-to-know basis. It requires intensive one-to-one in-class teaching which can be tricky with a class of 26

---------------------Anna-Marie: I am required to create a "portfolio" of my work for my masters degree I am working on. They have me set up a blog at WordPress.com for my portfolio. I really like this idea.

---------------------Moderator (ihor Charischak): I was working with a school district that was doingit. It required a lot TLC.

---------------------david weksler: Uri Treisman at UT Austin has also done work with "minority" students in high school and college

    ---------------------Anna-Marie: AMRobertson.wordpress.com

---------------------Maureen Watts: Thank you for running this at a time where I could participate -19 hour time difference.

---------------------Moderator (Maria Droujkova): How can we continue?
