Math and Literature Connections Many picture books provide the rich contexts from which we can engage our young learners - in an interesting context and we access/activate their prior knowledge. We can find math - even in books without a numbers theme! Here are 2 examples: Have students notice the math - shapes, sizes, counting (numbers), adding, parts of a whole (fractions), symmetry.... Ask students to build faces and notice what effect "the math" has on their face. How can you make your face: wise? happy? frustrated? confused? excited? look like an animal? a human?
