In old times people used fingers and feet to measure length and height. Inch comes from the distance from the tip of a person’s thumb to the first joint. Guess where foot comes from!
Inch (in.) – a small unit of measureFoot (ft.) – a unit of measure equal
to 12 inches

Yard (yd.) – a unit of measure equal to 3 feet or 36 inches

Centimeter (cm) – small unit of measure, about the width of a child’s index finger
