WALKER LIVING CAMPUS

When the grade 4 went to the Walker Living Campus we did three different activities.

First we went to the pollination station we got to use different types of garden tools. We got to rake leaves and

pull weeds. WE all had a chance to plant sunflower seeds or beans. Mostly everyone picked sunflowers but some

people picked beans.

The second thing we did was we went on a short hike to get away from the escarpment. We went to find different

animals and their habitats. We found tadpoles, frogs, a snake, worms and a salamander. Then when we were done

we played camouflage tag. We played 2 rounds of camouflage tag.

The last thing we did was vermicomposting. We learned that there is not just 1 type of worm. We learned about

the red wiggler. The red wiggler is red and likes to be in the dark. Then we went outside and played a game, it was

when you run with tennis balls to the grade 4s of a different school. Then we went through what is in plastic water

bottles. There is poison in the plastic bottles when it is hot it melts the bottles.

Those are three things we did at Walker Living Campus.

By Maggie C.

On April 15th the grade 4 class went to the Walker Living Campus and did some fun activities.

First we did the pollination station and we planted wildflowers in their garden and got rid of the weeds. After that

we planted bean sprouts and sunflower plants to take home.

The second thing we did was go on a hike we found a little area that had a little ravine that was made by rock

eroding. Then we played camouflage tag which is a game where someone is in the middle and the rest of people

have to hide. We also found a snake, frogs, a salamander and tadpoles.

The final thing we did was we learned about vermicomposting which is feeding worms and using their poop for soil.

Also during this time we got pet worms for our class!

That is what we did at the Walker Living Campus.

TECHNOVATION CHALLENGE

The Technovation Challenge is finally here! The girls on the team, Bethany, Selia, Melanie, Brooklyn and Charlie have been working hard over the win-ter and have entered their app into the contest. Their next step is to present the app at the Connect Conference on May 1st. The app they made is called ShopLocal, and its aim is to make it easier for customers to shop at local downtown Grimsby stores by highlighting items for sale, store web-sites, and other information. The girls, aided by the Grimsby Chamber of Commerce, sent out a survey to store owners, and used the information re-ceived to build their app. They will also be presenting at the Regional Pitch

presentation on May 25th. Good luck, girls!

Looking Ahead to September..

The staffing process has begun at our schools

in DSBN for the 2019/2020 school year. It is

very early yet and our staffing will continue

into September when actual numbers of stu-

dents are known. In the June newsletter any

staff changes will be listed (although it can

still change in September).

In order to help us be as accurate as possi-

ble, it is important that you let us know as

soon as possible if you are moving away or

know that your child(ren) will not be returning

next year. Also, if you know of anyone in the

community who may not have registered their

child please ask them to call the school. This

will help with our September organization.

This year we are fundraising for the cats and other small animals in-cluding hamsters and bunnies, at the Lincoln County Humane Society. Please pay $2 on School Cash Online to participate on Friday, May 24th. During the last block at the gym we will be watching a movie called The Secret Life Of Pets. On School Cash Online you will be able to buy butter or kettle corn bags of popcorn for $1.25. All the money that is raised will be used to purchase items for the cats and small ani-

mals wish lists. Last year we managed to raise over $400 for the dogs, let’s see if we can do better this year! All students will be free to bring in a picture or two of their animal as well to display on the bulletin board by the office. There will also be a donation option on school cash online if you want to make one.

WARMER WEATHER, CLOTHING, SAFETY School is a place for learning. We want our students to be dressed for their job as learners each day. We ask that in

warmer weather parents help students make appropriate choices in their clothing. Clothing should always cover under-

clothes (even when bending and stretching in gym and outside). We ask that all tops have straps of a 3 finger width and

tops do not have enlarged arm holes for school wear. Please ensure bottoms (shorts/skirts) are longer than your child’s

fingers when their arms are resting by their sides. Shorts must sit up around the waist at school. Since

children are outside at play daily and in the gym often, we require footwear that is safe to run and

play. Flip flops often cause injury at school and are not recommended. Closed toe sandals with ankle

straps or running shoes are best for at school. We appreciate your help in this matter! This helps to cre-

ate a good learning environment for all of our students.

FIGHT THE BITE!

Ticks, mosquitos and rabid animals have no boundaries and can be a risk to you and your family when walking to and from school

or work, waiting for the bus stop, family trips, and while playing in the yard at home or at the park.

Protect yourself and your family from West Nile Virus:

• Reduce standing water where mosquitoes breed

• Cover up, wear long sleeved shirts, long pants, hats, socks and shoes

• Repair any damaged window screens

• Use insect repellants containing DEET (follow manufacturer’s instructions)

Reduce the risk of Lyme Disease:

• Wear light coloured clothing to help spot ticks

• Use insect repellants containing DEET (follow manufacturer’s instructions)

• Check yourself, your children and pets for ticks after being outdoors

• Cut your grass and dispose of leaf litter where ticks can live

Prevent Rabies:

• Vaccinate your pets

• Do not feed or approach any wild, stray or strange animals

• Do not trap, transport, keep or pet any wild animals

• Do not try and nurse sick animals back to health

Presently, all of these diseases exist in Niagara. For more information, contact Niagara Region Public Health at 905-688-8248 ext. 7767 or 1-888-505-6074.

Last week on Wednesday April 17th, the grade six class were being judged on the students Heritage Fair boards, slides or presentations. They did their presentations in the Park School gym. The topics that they chose were based off an important or inspirational person or an important and memorable place or event that changed Canadian history. The grade six class did the Heritage Fair projects because it was a part of their language mark and to learn a lot about Canadian history. The grade six class learned a lot about their topic and becoming masters on their topic. The top five were chosen on a good board and presentation. The winners were in 5th place was Lyla with the topic of Gord Downie, 4th place was Gavin with the topic of George Etienne Cartier, 3rd place

was Julian with the topic of Chris Hadfield, 2nd place was Brooklyn with the topic of Chinese Workers in Canada, and 1st place was Jessica with the top-ic of Sir John. A MacDonald. The top 2 will be going to the Heritage Fair fi-nals. The judges were Ms Hopman from BDSS, Mr McBride from GSS, Ms Na-wrocki from Nelles, and Ms Saunders from the Grimsby Public Library. The boys’ gymnastics team did very well this year. Braedon V. (Gr. 5), Jacob M. (Gr.6) and Josh H. (Gr.6) went to practice every morning at eight o’clock to work on their routines. Their competition was at Gymnastics Energy in St. Catharines on April 18th. Braedon V. placed 6th on Mats and 6th on Bench, Jacob M. placed 4th on Mats and 2nd on Bench and Josh H. placed 2nd on Mats and 1st on Bench. They did an amazing job at the competition and had a lot of fun. Woohoo! Many thanks to Mrs. Mayberry and Ms. Sleep for driving the boys to the competition. A BIG thank you to Mrs. Coles

for coaching our team!

The Park School’s girls’ gymnastics team was made up of students in Grades 4 to 6. Mrs. Coles coached both the boys’ and girls’ teams. The girls competed on Mats and Bench. All of the girls did a great job at remembering their rou-tines. They also all did very well at the competition. They remembered to hold their scales and moves for 3 seconds as well as to point their toes. The girls had lots of fun at the competition and did their very best. They were the first school to arrive at Gymnastics Energy so they got to choose where to put all of their stuff. They picked at the back of gym on the trampoline. After all of the schools arrived everyone had a chance to do warm-ups. Then all the gymnasts and their coaches marched in and we sang our national anthem. After the playing of the national anthem the announcer announced who and where everybody was starting. Most of the Park girls were not one of the age groups starting at an event so they could either watch the others compete or go back to where their belongings were. When everybody had finished compet-ing the announcer called all the girls to the floor for awards. All of the girls placed very well and had so much fun. All of the gymnasts give a huge thank you to Mrs. Coles. A big thanks to all the parents

who drove the team to and from the competition.

On Friday April 25th the Park School dance team attended the DSBN “I Matter as a Dancer” Showcase. Park School’s Dance Team dedicated lots of time to practice through December to April. The dance team took a bus to

the Scotiabank Center in Niagara Falls. When we got there they were the first school and had lots of time practice on the big stage with nobody else there. After we practiced we went outside to get some fresh air and took some pictures to remember the day. We enjoyed dinner at the convention center and continued to get our makeup done throughout dinner time. As soon as everyone's makeup was fin-ished we finally got to go and get our costumes on and ready to hit the stage. The performance was amazing and everyone loved it. After all of the individual school performances, all of the schools got together to perform the final dance. Everyone had a great time! All the dancers give a huge thank you

to Mrs. Kubes and Ms. Doerrsam for an amazing day.

SUNSCREEN REMINDER

Hi Park Families!

It's hard to believe we are already into May and are starting on our last two months of the school year. I want to thank everyone who came out to our Paul Davis speaking engagement at the Grimsby Public Library on April 24th. It was a fantastic event full of extremely relevant and im-portant information. If you have a chance to attend any of his upcoming events, it is highly recommended. You can follow Paul on Facebook.com/

pauldavistips or his website: http://socialnetworkingsafety.net/

We are now actively seeking volunteers for our year end BBQ celebration (Friday June 14th) ! Please contact your school council if you are able to participate in any capacity. We are looking for people to BBQ, serve food & be stationed at raffle tables/games. We are also beginning to send out donation requests to the community. If you own or know anyone who owns a business who would be willing to donate anything to our BBQ

(food, raffle prizes, gift cards, etc) please let us know. Your kindness and generosity is appreciated. We have secured the Grimsby Fire Department to bring a firetruck to the BBQ to do a touch-a-truck event with us that day

and we can't wait! Put your party hats on, it's going to be a fun one!

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy May. Contact us anytime: parkcoun-

PANTHER PAW DRAW WINNERS The Education Foundation of Niagara (EFN) supports many DSBN students in need where government funding is not avail-able. By raising money they provide children with basic ne-cessities such as proper clothing, support students in getting a good education, and they even help with Prom Project (an event for students to pick out an outfit and some jewelry to wear to their prom or graduation).

Mrs. Pearson’s Grade 5 class at Park Public School planned theme days to help raise money for the EFN fundraiser. For Monday we had Hat Day. Tuesday was gum day, and plenty of students brought in their favourite gum. There were so many bubbles! On Wednesday students paid $1 and brought in their toys. They had a blast! Finally, for a minimum of $2 you got to wear your pajamas to school on Thursday. Many students had stuffies, slippers, and housecoats. Thursday was amazing!

Park Public School raised a total of $399.62 for the EFN fundraiser. This was an awesome amount for how small our school is. We raised the most money on Thursday which was Pajama day! Thank you to all the students who participated in the EFN fundraiser!
