Preambles

aints of the Lord, it gives me a great Joy to be in your mist today. I am

proud to be grafted to Christ and a co-labourer with you in the vineyard

of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I have been invited here to give a talk on mathematics is sweeter than Ice cream

I sought the face of the Lord just as His word enjoins and many colourful things

added to my life, for his word said To live and to die in Christ is gain.

Mathematics has become physical bread and butter that had garnished my life and

Gods word as remained the source of inspiration and spiritual food to my soul.

In this talk, I shall discuss Mathematics in general; see how sweet it is and seehow God, the architect of the universe created Mathematics out nothingness and

exploited it to demonstrate His presence, power, mercy and supreme deity to

mankind.

What is mathematics?

The American heritage dictionary of science defines mathematics as The science

dealing with the measurement, properties, and relationship of qualities, as

expressed in number or symbols

Next question often being asked by people is what do Mathematicians do,

practice or believe in? From the dictionary definition of Mathematics it is

intricately related to studying of space, time and numbers.

Mathematics is basically concerned with measurement, properties of objects and

studying the relationship that exist among variables quantifying such objects.

Thomas Jefferson once talks of about a society in which individuals having

acquired a broad knowledge of topics exercise sound judgment in making

personal and political decision. He said environmental and economic issues

dominate modern life and behind these issues are complex matters of science,

technology and mathematics that call for an awareness of fundamental

principles.

Mathematics often provides us with fundamental principles and even platform for

revealing the mysteries of the nature. I will talk more on this later.

What do people (Mathematicians) who practice Mathematics in the past said

about Mathematics?

C.F. Gauss (1977 1855) once said Mathematics is Queen of the Science and

Arithmetic is the queen of Mathematics she often considered to render service to

astronomy and other natural science, but under all circumstance the first pay her

due.

Hilbert asserted that Mathematics is a meaningless game played with

meaningless mark on paper, the only mathematical experience to which we can

refer in the making of marks on the paper

The very word Mathematics was coined out of the motto of the school established

by Pythagoras, All is number it reads. The word Mathematics simply means

learned person; incidentally, today, it is the legal professionals who are referred

to as learned persons. In Pythagoras days, it is only Mathematicians who were

referred to as learned persons.

organisms to be bilaterally symmetrical, that is, mirror image of himself both

internally and externally.

For human being, genetics has established that no two human beings are

genetically similar because the inheritance components (genes) in them are

dissimilar. The concept of symmetry had led to development of a branch of

Mathematics called group theory with an algebraic structure formalism used by

Mathematicians to study symmetric structure like crystals and for signal

processing.

The branch called bioinformatics has been developed to understand the genome

and protonomy of organisms. Bioinformatics is the mathematics responsible for

sequencing and analyzing of genomes of organisms to understand the structure of

the genes the organisms are made up of. It helps us to understand the mystery of

inheritance, disease and allergy associated with organisms.

Mathematics, through the power of synchrony of data, brings out silent

information embedded in the data and has become indispensable tool in science,

creation of universe, man and plants. Mathematics has occupied most dominant

role in demystifying the mysteries surrounding things God created. It is only God

alone who can grant us understanding of things.

Everything God created has occupied minds of Scientists and pondered on some

of the wonders of God, especially for people who believe in God and His word.

Here is one of such wonders, if it is possible for all the over six billion human

beings on earth to study one single tiny mosquito. Then it is not ridiculous to say

they cannot finish understanding this tiny organism till heaven and earth pass

way! God is great and there is no controversy about that.

Passages in the Bible that support Gods mathematical prowess

First of all let us acknowledge that God created man and his brain-the domain of

intelligence. The creator of the brain shall He not be intelligent as the scripture

asked? It is an obvious fact that God is omniscience and surpasses any kind of

intelligence both spiritual and temporal.

In Malachi 3:10, God enjoins people to pay their tithe which is ten percent (10%)

of their income. He multiplies this contribution by some multiplying factor as

blessing for everybody. He who contributes nothing receives nothing and he who

sow sparingly reaps sparingly by universal law of contribution and blessing.

Let us search through the scripture where we can easily demonstrate God to be the

creator and with due respect to Him our creator, the author and perfecta of our

faith. God is infinite and eternal; we human beings and other living organisms are

finite and internal. I intend use the concept of measurement to demonstrate why

God is a practicing Mathematician. God uses Mathematics a lot especially in

measurements.

God specified the dimension of things to be consecrated to him. The Ark build by

Noah, the dimension God specified to him being 450 x 75 x 45 cubic feet

(Genesis 6: 15 17).God had already calculated the number of animals, people

and food to occupy the ark without problem of food and air shortages etc.

God instructed Moses to build tabernacle for him with following specifications:

The ArkExodus 25:10 using acacia wood, make with dimension 31/2

x 21/4

x 21/2

cubic feet.

The Tent - Exodus 26:1 make the tabernacle tent from 10 coloured sheets of fine

lines 42 feet long and 6 feet wide.

The Alter- Exodus 27:1, using acacia wood, make a square alter 71/2

feet wide,

and 41/2

feet high.

God instructed the Israelite to give the Levite their gardens and vineyards and

shall extend 1500 feet out from the city walls in each direction with an additional

1500 feet beyond that for pastureland (Number 35: 4 5),

Dimension of the Temple build by King Solomon (160 x 20 x 30 cubit feet)

(1king 6: 2 3) .This is another application of Mathematics. God calculated the

number of worshipers to be in the temple comfortably with sufficient clean air to

breath without health problem.

Tithe formula

God proposed that every mans income should be shared in ratio 1 to 9 between

God and man. The sharing of income formula between man and God makes us to

understand the importance of measurement and accuracy in everything Gods

does thereby making us to appreciate his handwork.

Application of MathematicsMathematics is about problem solving, Gorge Polya said a problem solving means

finding a way of a difficulty, a way around an obstacle, attending an aim which was

not immediately attainable solving problem, he ended, the specific achievement of

intelligence and intelligence is the specific gift of man

Mathematics has found applications in every area of human endevours. No matter

how daft a person is he needs mathematics in his daily activities at least basic

arithmetic of counting money and things. Mathematics found many applications

in medicine, engineering, business, education and so on.

Conclusions

The sweetness of Mathematics is more than ice cream for people who appreciated

Gods creation. Mathematics revealed Gods realm of his glory to mankind, his

creation and authority and the importance of order, synchrony in His activity by

loving us. How sweet is mathematics compared to Ice cream which is physically

or literary sweet but Mathematics considered from Gods realm of glory is

spiritually sweeter than Ice cream this make us to appreciate God and has offer us

hope for eternity by believing Christ and trusting and appreciate Him the more.
