The Best of Times: Math Strategies That MultiplyAuthor: Tang, GregIllustrator: Briggs, Harry
AnnotationPoems and illustrations highlight strategies for multiplying numbers from zero to 10. The text provides strategies for determining products, using repeated doubling, annexing zeros, skip counting, and understanding the properties of one and zero. The computer-generated illustrations of animals in hilarious situations help convey and clarify concepts. This resource develops an understanding of multiplication rather than focusing on a repetition and memorization approach.

Blockhead: The Life of FibonacciAnnotationIn this video program, the life of Leonardo Fibonacci is examined. Living in medieval Italy, Leonardo constantly thought about numbers. People called him blockhead because he daydreamed about numbers. As Fibonacci grew older and travelled the world, he studied how other countries use numbers and how they represent a numeral.
Today, Fibonacci is famous for his word problem about multiplying rabbits. He also discovered that things in nature seem to follow a certain pattern. Fibonacci is considered to be one of the greatest Western mathematicians of all time.

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?Author: McNamara, Margaret Illustrator: Karas, G. Brian
AnnotationMr. Tiffin brings three pumpkins to class, one large, one medium, and one small pumpkin. Robert guesses that the largest pumpkin has one million seeds; Elinor thinks that the medium pumpkin has 500 seeds; and Anna estimates that the little pumpkin contains 22 seeds. Charlie does not guess at all. The students think of different groupings to count the seeds in the pumpkins. The class learns that being the largest pumpkin does not mean that it contains the most pumpkin seeds.

The King’s ChessboardAuthor: Birch, David
AnnotationGeometric progressions are explored in this resource as a vain king insists that a wise man accept a reward for his service. The man reluctantly requests a daily payment of rice that is to be doubled for each square of the chessboard. The unwitting monarch grants the request, and subsequently drains the royal granaries of its rice supply. The watercolour illustrations amplify the king’s anguish as he realizes the folly of his decision, and his eventual concession that pride can make a fool of oneself. This resource parallels the mathematical premise of Demi’s One Grain of Rice: A Mathematical Folktale and McKibbon’s The Token Gift.

Math Homework That Counts: Grades 4-6 Author: Raphel, Annette
AnnotationCreative homework assignments or extension activities are the focus of this teacher’s resource. The interactive activities have been divided into four categories: to provide practice, to prepare a foundation for upcoming mathematical concepts, to extend taught concepts, and to emphasize creativity. The premise of the activities is to encourage critical and creative thinking rather than the practice of a computational skill through a series of questions on a worksheet. Literature selections and communicative activities are incorporated into several of the activities. This resource includes a table of contents, samples of student work, and a bibliography.

Spaghetti and Meatballs for All!: A Mathematical Story. 1st ed.Author: Burns, MarilynIllustrator: Tilley, Debbie
AnnotationMr. and Mrs. Comfort have arranged eight tables and thirty-two chairs to seat their invited relatives at the family reunion. Pandemonium erupts as each new group of guests suggests its own ideas for seating, and subsequently alters the table arrangements. As the dining room is reconfigured into tables for six, eight, and twelve people, the guests continue to dispute over inadequate seating and the placement of silverware. Eventually, the tables are rearranged in Mrs. Comfort’s original seating plan. An appended section provides an explanation of the story’s mathematical concepts and suggestions for extending the study of measurement.

The Warlord’s KitesAuthor: Pilegard, Virginia WaltonIllustrator: Debon, Nicolas
AnnotationSet in the palace of a powerful Chinese warlord, Chuan and his friend Jing Jing, the puppet master’s daughter, devise a plan to save the palace from destruction in the face of their enemy’s invading army. Together, they use their mathematical and critical thinking skills to construct three kites which they use at nighttime to frighten off the invading army. In the construction process, they use nonstandard units of measurement and multiplication by an array, which illustrates the relationship to area. A historical note explains the importance of kites in Chinese culture, and instructions for making a kite are included at the end of the story. Fifth in the Warlord’s Series, this story of friendship and teamwork incorporates ancient Chinese culture and traditions with important mathematical concepts.
