This degree equips you with the knowledgeand skills to apply mathematics and statisticsin the business world, and is excellentpreparation for a career in banking andfinance.
You spend two-thirds of your time studyingmathematics and statistics, and one-thirdstudying topics in accountancy and corporatefinance in Newcastle University BusinessSchool.
Alongside core modules from our mathematicsand statistics programmes, you will takespecialist topics with financial applications,such as:

Financial Mathematics careersMathematicians and statisticians have always been highlyvalued by employers for their analytical and problem-solvingskills, and their ability to think logically and quantitatively.
As well as developing these skills, our degrees also equipyou with the key skills which are essential for theemployment market such as communication, teamwork,planning and organisation.

There are some careers for which a degree in mathematicsis usually required, for example, teaching mathematics,statistical work, actuarial work, some research anddevelopment, and some areas of computing.
Mathematics graduates are also strong candidates insectors such as:
• management consultancy• finance• accountancy• information technology• logistics• transportation
Industry too is always looking out for specialists with aninterest in the applications of mathematics to engineering.
A degree in mathematics and statistics can also lead on tofurther study including PhD, MSc and PGCE courses. Inshort, mathematics graduates can be found in a very widecross-section of careers, and in both the private and publicsectors. Approximately 50 per cent of graduate jobsadvertised in the UK do not specify any particular degreesubject. Many employers are more interested in the skillsand personal qualities you have acquired at university thanin the degree course you have studied. The University hasvery good links with employers. Many companies visit theUniversity to give presentations, attend job fairs and carryout interviews, and some of them are specifically targetingmathematicians.
