Maths at Home
How can I best support my children in Maths?
Your Own Maths Experiences
1. How did you feel about Maths at school and why?
2. What differences do you see in the way your children learn Maths
compared to how you were learnt it?
Eastwood Primary SchoolMathematics Vision Statement
At Eastwood, we believe Mathematics should spark interest and curiosity in all students. This can be done by providing purposeful
contexts for students to explore, discuss and apply problem solving strategies. Learning experiences should be accessible yet
challenging for all students, with the aim of developing deep understanding of Mathematics concepts. Emphasis should be
placed on students talking with their peers in order to clarify, explain and justify their mathematical thinking.

Putting Research into Action
Encourage a Growth Mindset
● Never praise children by telling them they are “smart.”
● Never share stories of math failure or even dislike.
Encourage Challenge and Mistakes
● Always praise mistakes and say that you are really pleased that your child is making them.
● Encourage children to work on problems that are challenging for them, so that they can make mistakes.
● When you help your children, do not lead them through work step by step, as this takes away important learning opportunities for them.
Focus on Understanding
● Encourage drawing whenever you can.
● Encourage students to make sense of maths at all times.
● Never time children or encourage faster work.
Develop Number Sense● Encourage students to think flexibly about numbers.● When children answer questions and get them wrong, try and find the
logic in their answers.
Have Fun!
● Give children math puzzles.
● Play games.
