Competition was held this term and what a lovely range of entries we had. It was quite difficult to choose a winner but eventually we decided on Katelyn Lewis’s lovely octopus as the main winner with Nia Cushway’s collage bookmark and Abigail Radwell’s genre bookmark as runners-up; all won a Book Token and a certificate. However, as we had so many great entries five other students have been Highly Commended and will receive a certificate of achievement. These are Madeline Allan, Emily Mitchell, Steph Puntschart, Aimee Bebbington and Rose Vince.

The three winning bookmarks have been reproduced and are now available from the library for our readers to use.

Well done to all our winners. Ms Bate

Travel and Tourism Trip O N Monday September 23rd the

Year 13 Travel and Tourism students travelled to Norwich in order to complete part of our A2 Travel and Tourism coursework. This entailed planning, preparing and delivering a guided tour of Norwich.

Within the group there were different approaches taken. Half the group opted for a traditional, person-led tour where questions could be answered en route and the other decided to bring their work firmly into the 21st century and use technology to deliver a prepared audio tour.

The group had spent a lot of time beforehand deciding on the type of tour to deliver, but in the end the most popular choice was the ‘ghost tour of Norwich’ which centred around the Tombland, Fye Bridge and Elm Hill part of the city centre. Even though we did our tours in the daytime, we tried as hard as

possible to convey a sense of the ‘other worldly’ to the audience. We also worked very hard to set the right tone for our tours that would gain us the most marks.

All in all it was a highly successful day and proved yet again that speaking in front of people is never as scary at it seems beforehand! Amelia Lewis 13B & Amelia Hallett 13P

G&T Dance T HE “2faced Dance” workshop

was a unique and fun experience; I was able to dance with other people interested in dance, learning a completely different style of dance which was contemporary and hip-hop. The moves were quite hard, and made my feet and hands hurt, but I think that in the end we got the hang of it; but this couldn’t have been done without our fab “2Faced” teacher! Erin Hamilton 9A

On Wednesday October 16th, the “Gifted and Talented Dancers” were visited by Tom, who is a member of the contemporary/hip hop dance group, “2Faced”. We were taught a thorough warm-up to prepare us for the day ahead. Tom taught us some contact work and lifts to perform in pairs. These will help us a lot with our GCSE choreography! The day was very tiring, but incredibly useful and we all really enjoyed ourselves! Thank you very much to Tom for coming and Miss Baldwin for organising it! Jenny Morris and Emily Davies 11A

Rotary Young Chef Competition O N Wednesday October 9th, 13

students from Years 8 to 12 competed against each other in the “RIBI Young Chef”, a competition run by the Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland with support from the Rotary Club of Woodbridge Deben and judged by Professional chef Peter Senior and Suffolk One’s Food Technology and Hospitality Teacher Heather Gray.

The contestants were: Year 8, Emma Capell; Year 9, Alice Brown, Beth Greggor, Taelor May Howell-Langstone, Hannah Rankin and Alistair Wells; Year 10, Caitlin Du Plessis, Devon Jacobs, Maddy Masters and Adam Muir; Year 11, Lauren Bond and Kieron Boreham; and, finally, Year 12, Ella Dowden.

Each student had to prepare, cook and serve a 3-course meal for two people based on healthy eating within 2 ½ hours. They had a maximum budget of £15 and were marked on their choice of dishes, planning, costing, skills, hygiene, time management, taste and presentation of each dish and presentation of their table.

The competition, organised by Food Technology and Catering teachers Mrs

Ewers and Mrs Fisk, was supported by family, friends and staff.

Everyone did fantastically well to take on such a mammoth task and it was great to see such a range in age and the ability of students involved.

And the winners were … 1st place – Ella Dowden 2nd place – Maddy Masters

Both were presented with a prize and all competitors received a certificate. Ella will also go through to the District Final on Saturday February 1st 2014 in Kings Lynn. Well done everyone and good luck Ella!! Mrs Ewers

a Gifted and Talented Art and Music day in support of cancer care to raise money and provide artwork for Ipswich Hospital. Students, staff and members of the community created wire sculpture, canvases and photography based on themes of journeys and the senses. The work has now been installed in the Woolverstone Wing of the hospital in the main corridor and garden. The staff at the hospital are thrilled and have had lovely positive feedback from patients. Many thanks to all those who have contributed, we hope to add to the artwork at the hospital in the near future. See the photo on the front cover Mrs Hetherington

German Exchange H AVING a German exchange is a

completely different experience from what you would expect. It’s such a great thing to be involved in as you get to learn different phrases and also helps build your understanding of the language.

When our German exchange partners first stepped off the bus we didn’t know what to expect. We knew they were nice because we had spoken to them before through emails and Facebook, but we had no idea if we were going to have completely different interests. The first day it was rather awkward because we hardly knew each other, but when the second day came they were just about settled in and felt like part of the family. After school we would talk about what they had done on their trips during the day and played on the Wii. One day after school we took them for a walk around where we lived and we went to the park to get that extra bonding time.

On the Friday evening we took them

to Woodbridge to show them around and went to a typical British pub for dinner, so they could get a full experience of the British culture. During the weekend we did a range of different activities. On Saturday we met up with some of our friends and German exchange students, and went into Woodbridge, where they saw a lot of their friends and it turned out to be a really good day. In the evening, we took our guests to Prezzos for a lovely meal out. They thoroughly enjoyed it.

On Sunday, we took our guests to the zoo. That was an experience, learning all the different names of animals in German and just having the best time. When the day came for them to leave it was slightly upsetting but we had had a great experience so it was well worth it.

If anyone was to take German we would recommend doing the German exchange as it made it easier to learn and we can’t wait to go to Germany. Rosie Wallace 10S and Emily Villa 10I

PE Round Up Rugby

T HE 6th Form Rugby team had two successful outings this week.

Firstly, they beat Thomas Mills in the Natwest Schools’ Cup Competition by 20 points. The team was not playing its usual free flowing rugby and struggled to get to grips with the game but eventually managed to up the intensity in order to secure the win.

Two days, later the team travelled to Stowmarket Rugby Club to take part in a 10s competition. We found ourselves in the top division facing the likes of Woodbridge School and West Suffolk College Rugby Academy, a daunting prospect as both have the time and resources to train their teams to a high level.

Woodbridge and West Suffolk played first and both looked well drilled outfits. However, Farlingaye quickly spoilt the

The whole team performed to an

excellent standard including two Year 11 students, Jake Silverthorne and Adrian Sanday. Cameron Pearson was the Captain for the day and led his team well. However the man of the tournament was Josh Sherman who gave an extremely accomplished performance managing to steal the ball from the opposition time and time again.

The next round of the National Cup will be against St. Josephs College which will no doubt be an entertaining encounter and a tough test for both teams. Mr Sparkes

Football

T HE Year 7 football team continues to impress with an unbeaten run.

Not only have they won all their fixtures, but they have yet to concede a goal. They have progressed in both the National and County Cup competitions and are in the finals of their local league. Next week the boys have a trip to Bury St Edmunds

and Westbourne in an effort to maintain their winning ways. Players to keep an eye on for the future!

The Year 10 football team had their first fixture last week in Lowestoft, against Benjamin Britten High School in the Cup. The team gave an excellent performance with every player working hard to get the win. The weather was influential as both teams struggled against the wind and rain. Farlingaye scored first and looked the better team but conceded soon after to take the game into extra time. Eventually the game went to penalties and Benjamin Britten won. A disappointing end to a great performance. The team is training hard every Tuesday and is determined to beat St Albans in their next fixture. Mr Sparkes

Academy kindly hosted the area finals. Farlingaye finished top of their original group beating Kesgrave and Copleston and faced East Bergholt in the semi final. Teddy Baker was first to score and continued to score the majority of our goals. We beat East Bergholt 2-0 and faced Westbourne in the final. 3-0 was enough to crown Farlingaye overall league winners. A huge achievement for all who played particularly as the team has still to concede a league goal. Well done to Charlie Crossley for a superb defensive display and his man of the tournament award. U14 Netball

O N Thursday October 10th, Farlingaye entered the U14 South

Suffolk tournament. We started off on a high, winning our first two games against East Bergholt and Kesgrave, and scoring some brilliant goals. The team worked well together, and the ball moved fluidly up the court. As the tournament progressed, the matches became more challenging, however, we stood our ground.

As a team we defended extremely well. Sarah Llewellyn and Saskia Wright made some part icularly good interceptions, enabling us to score some extra goals. Despite a remarkable performance from the Farlingaye squad, we struggled to maintain our winning streak against some of the most experienced teams and we finished a commendable 5th out of 8 schools.

The squad: Rachel Hopley (Captain), Saskia Wright, Tilly Barnard, Gen Garfield, Elsa Cooney, Summer Howlett, Anna Firth, Anna Vincent, Sarah Llewellyn, Alice Bennett and Maddie Wright.

Many thanks to Mrs Garrod, our umpire, Miss Tallent, our coach and Kate Atkinson, our assistant coach. Rachel Hopley 9G

Year 10 Rugby

T HE Year 10 Rugby team were invited to compete at the Ipswich

Rugby Club 10s tournament. In total 4 schools were invited to compete in an event designed to further develop rugby in some of the more competitive local schools. Unfortunately, Copleston had to pull out due to a host of injuries. This left the tournament to be a 3-way battle

between Farlingaye, Thomas Mills and Northgate. Each team played each other twice and with Farlingaye not playing in the first match it allowed the boys to watch the other two teams in action. It was clear the standard of rugby was going to be very high and Farlingaye would need to be at their best to compete.

Fortunately in all of the games Farlingaye played outstanding rugby, with all players putting in great performances. With the boys playing well, Farlingaye won all 4 of their games very convincingly. Beating Thomas Mills 44-0 and 37-0 and beating Northgate 55-0 and 26-0.

This meant Farlingaye were presented with a trophy for winning the tournament and Leo Lewis was also awarded player of the tournament.

Following on from their success, we travelled to the notoriously difficult East Bergholt for the next game. The game started very scrappily with neither team able to get 'quick ball' to their backs and as a result tries looked like they would be a real commodity in this game. It was East Bergholt who opened the scoring, just before half time, somewhat against the run of play. After a long punt down the field confusion behind Luke Uru and Archie Read led to the players colliding and an East Bergholt winger picking the ball up to score unopposed. This meant East Bergholt had a 7-0 lead going into half time, but after a few tactical alterations and some encouraging words at half time Farlingaye looked a much better side in the second half. Farlingaye's forwards Charlie Haste and Chris Oakes were very impressive, ably backed up by Lewis Jacobs and George Pryke. This meant that Farlingaye were dominant at both the ruck and in the scrum. Ben Mobee and Leo Lewis took real advantage of this with Ben scoring two great tries, Leo scoring the try of the game and Lewis Jacobs also adding a

Sixth Form Football

F OLLOWING on from last year's Suffolk County Cup success the

Sixth Form football team started their season with two National Cup games. Having received a bye in the first round they played Thomas Mills in round 2 and with a few new additions to the squad the team were fairly optimistic ahead of their first game. Farlingaye started the game at an excellent intensity. It was Tom Anderson who opened the scoring, good work from James Payne and Aaron Thurlow allowing Tom to slot home from the edge of the box. Thomas Mills then began to come back into the match but excellent goalkeeping from James Taylor kept the scores as they were going into halftime.

Farlingaye were much improved after the break3 Connor Davies was a real livewire upfront and James Payne was even more impressive out wide, creating numerous opportunities, mainly for Max Hutchings and Aaron Thurlow. It was Max who scored Farlingaye's second goal whilst James and Connor each scored late on to cap excellent displays and give Farlingaye a deserved 4-0 win.

In the 3rd round Farlingaye played at home against King Edward VI School from Bury St Edmunds. Due to the conditions the game was very scrappy in the first ten minutes. However, after both teams settled, they started to play some nice football. Despite some great attacking football neither team looked likely to score with both teams well organised and disciplined in defence. After a slight formation change Farlingaye began to look a little more threatening. It was towards the end of the first half that we had Farlingaye's

first goal, Max picking the ball up on the edge of the area and calmly slotting past the keeper. This led to the scores finishing 1-0 at the end of the first half.

After what seemed to be some stern words from their manager at half time King Edwards started the second half exceptionally well, dominating the opening exchanges and coming close to scoring twice. However Farlingaye rode their luck a bit and weathered this storm, keeping the scores at 1-0 going into the latter stages of the second half. Farlingaye then began to get back into the game and started to play some nice football, with Jake Gooderham at the heart of most of the nice passages of play. After a scrappy passage of play Jack Seccombe steered the ball towards goal and it deflected past the King Edwards keeper to give Farlingaye a 2-0 lead, which they hold onto until the final whistle. The boys will now play Hartismere in round 4.

Well done boys. Mr Payne

English Schools Cross Country

W E were very pleased to be asked to host the first round of this

National Competition and welcomed schools from across Suffolk to compete in a series of races on our school fields. The competition is split into four age groups: Junior Boys (Year 7/8), Junior Girls (Year 7/8), Inter Boys (Year 9/10) and Inter Girls (Year 9/10). Six runners represent their school in each age group and the distances ranged from 2.8km for the Junior Girls up to 4.3km for the Inter Boys.

We have some fantastic runners at the school who train hard at lunch times and after school and they were certainly rewarded for all their efforts! All our teams finished in first place and they will all now go on to compete at the Regional Finals which are held in Bedfordshire in early November. The names of the team members are below
