ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum College head men's soccer

coach Allen Vital was named South Atlantic Conference

Coach of the Year, and freshman defender Matias Ru-

bio led a group of six Pioneers honored as members of

the All-SAC team, league officials announced Thursday.

NSCAA All-Southeast Region Team

KANSAS CITY, Kan. --- Tusculum College freshman de-

fender Matias Rubio has been named to the 2011 Na-

tional Soccer Coaches Association of America Division

II Men's All-Southeast Region Third Team, the NSCAA

announced Tuesday.

Rubio (Bradenton, Fla.) is the 31st Pioneer all-time to

earn All-Region status, and the 28th since Tusculum

joined NCAA Division II in 1999. Earlier this fall, he was

a second-team Daktronics All-Southeast Region hon-

oree and he was a first-team All-South Atlantic Confer-

ence pick. Rubio was one of seven freshmen to make

the All-Region team.

Rubio helped the Pioneers to a 6-1-2 league record

and a second-place finish in the final standings. He

made 16 starts for the Pioneers, playing a key part in

limiting opponents to a total of 20 goals during the

regular season.

Rubio played 1,511 of a possible 1,516 minutes, miss-

ing only five minutes due to a brief injury substitution

early in the year, and scored his first goal of the season

in the Pioneers' 4-0 win over Carson-Newman on Oct.

12.

Tusculum finished the 2011 season with a 7-8-3 overall

record, going unbeaten in 10 of its last 11 regular-

season games after opening the season with six straight

losses.
