Mike Ishikawa is an Architect by profession. During his vacations, or any time he had some free time, he sketched with his pen and ink, filling many sketch books with interesting places he visited with his wife Miki, becoming a postcard of his travels. Semi- retirement allowed some time to think about a new May 8 Demonstrator – Mike Ishikawa interest, which led to pastel painting in early 2009, after taking an art class in Torrance with Beverly Metcalf. He loves using pastels, the vibrant colors are unlimited, being a skier, hiker, and fisherman, painting the outdoor landscape has been one of his passions. He uses bold bright colors, strong strokes, shades, shadows, and varied textures to create an image that is similar to the actual image, but with more interest and a “painterly” (non-photographic) quality to the painting. He paints as a hobby and his favorite subjects are seascapes around the south bay, old fishing boats, Sierra Nevada mountains, deserts and night images of buildings. He is a member of the Southern California Pastel Society and Pacific Art Guild of Palos Verdes. [email protected]

Ruby Wang was the March 13 Demonstrator

  It was heart warming to see our old

friend Ruby again after a long time and her charm enveloped the room. She treated us to a number of anecdotes about her life in China as well as in America. Her demo centered on the different types of brush strokes that she employs in her painting, Chinese with western influence. She illustrated v-strokes, u-strokes and “mi-dot” strokes, each stroke having its own “tonality and energy”. She astounded her audience with her sense of composition by unifying unrelated

subjects on the rice paper by the use of collage. She uses exclusively her own work for collaging, being partial to geometric shapes. Ruby paints with an oriental brush and showed us how it is held and used, far differently from the way we tend to use the brush in a western style.

Sad News We are saddened to report that longtime SBWS member, Florence Strauss, passed away from heart failure at age 91 on March 17th. Florence was extremely talented. She had a special gift painting flowers and was constantly awarded special recognition for that. She will be missed but her art will remain forever......
